With my vine plants i just cut to have one node cuttings and put them back in the original pot with the “mother plant”, it might take longer than in water, but it sprouts not all of them, but enough. I bought perlite this week (for something else) but will take your advice and start doing my propagation in it, the sphagnumoss like you said clings to the roots, had trouble with it and thin roots (the moss won 😢).
@ I’ve done everything but I think I’m with you 100%. Water, perlite, air-layering and even stratum but sphagnum moss is frustrating. I’ve had excellent success with PON with my Hoyas.
Great video Jeff! Thanks for including the timeframe too! I laughed when you said you were down to one propbox, because I just can't stop making them! I hope you and your family have wonderful holidays! 🎁
Hi Jeff Im new to your channel, but really enjoy it. I have a large collection of plants myself, but not nearly as many as you. Very educational. Thanks for all your knowledge and sharing it with us. I know you like people letting you know where they are so Im from Maryland . Thanks again Jeff , will be watching. Take care.
Thanks Jeff! Your segment on perlite propagation has given me confidence to finally try this method. Have a very Merry Christmas and all the best in the New Year from Winnipeg!
With vining plants, such as pothots and cordatum/hederaceum philodendron, I always make 1-node cuttings, maybe 2 nodes if they're close together. I find there's a higher risk of failure (root rot, tip dehydration) if the length of the vine in propagation is longer than 3 nodes, whether it's in water or a prop box. I believe it's because the longer the vine, the more difficult it is for the plant to support the already present leaves while simultaneously pushing new roots The exception would be plants that root all along the stem, like Hoya curtisii. For those, I take "long" cuttings of about 5 inches and press them tightly against the perlite or sphagnum in a prop box. I also sprinkle a tiny bit of moss or perlite on top of the cuttings to increase contact with the substrate.
"I don't even know what this it"....something I say to my myself every time I open a prop box. I'm horrible about keeping track what I throw in the boxes. I also hate using moss for the same reason as you, but I recently tried it again and I'm having much better success if I let the moss dry out over night. Otherwise, it rots my plants. Thanks for the pot extender idea....gonna try that on my pathetic zebra plant:)

I’m going to use the pot extender idea for my leggy agleonima. Perfect
Good luck and thanks for watching!

Ya....moss can be difficult even though it roots so well. Thanks for watching my videos Patricia!
Excellent as always. I prop often but it’s ALWAYS good to have a refresher.
What is your preferred method? I know it probably depends on the plant, but what's the funnest method for you?

Good Saturday morning Jeff. This is interesting since I rarely propagate but I buying a heat mat at the end of the month. Then I’ll be prepared.

Haha. I thought I was the only disorganized plant prop box person 😂
I need to start drinking coffee so I can have large plastic cups to make a semi hydro system
I get most from the dollar store
Hi Jeff, how do you propagate a nerve plant
How long should I leave my potho in water before I put it in soil?

Do you add anything to the water to help with water propagating and make roots faster? Thanks

My problem is that they do well in water but when I move them to soil they all die!! By root rot!
When I transfer them to soil I make sure to keep them well watered for a week or so then cut back to normal watering for that plant
@ ok thanks!!
You need to plant up all the alocasia from your prop box. They are getting scrunched looking
I have no room haha
