- In This Installation Video, I Show How to Wire in a Mini-Split Air Conditioner and Heat Pump System. I go over How to Connect the Power Wires from the Disconnect to the Outdoor Unit after Installing the Whip. I also show the Low Voltage DC Communication and High Voltage AC Wires from the Outdoor Heat Pump Unit to the Indoor Head Unit. On this Mitsubishi Ductless System, we are using the Southwire EZ IN to connect the outdoor unit to the indoor wall unit. The EZ-IN cable contains 4 THHN wires, are shielded with MC and rated for outdoor use. I also show the EZ-IN outdoor connector.

The way you handle your adjustable wrench is not in a proper position,i mean its not in a according position of rotation to for tightening your connector.everything else i love it very nice and clear turorial

I can’t express how EASY it was to install. This unit has been a life savior during the summer and some days during other seasons where it can still be a bit warm at night. In this small place is my friend, a husky, poodle mix and myself. We need AC - lolI don’t use the dehumidifier option - I’m not sure if it will leak in my house, since I did not install the small draining hose that came with it. May look into it late but I don’t worry about much humidity in the apartment. I don’t understand why the negative reviews since all things mentioned, I personally did not find issues with. Definitely worth it!

I’ve noticed a lot of these do it yourself mini split videos don’t go into great detail step by step in wiring from the electrical panel to the unit. What the breaker looks like, what size breaker, how many wires what size wire and how it’s properly installed so no one gets electrocuted or shorts the system out
I know! This is the part I want to see and nobody shows that.
That’s because you’re watching a HVAC tech do a mini split install. Not an electrician adding a disconnect and circuit for the technician.

When wrapping a stranded wire under a screw twist the wire counter clock wise before wrapping the wire clock wise under and tighten the screw. This stops the stranded wire from being squashed out from under the screw while being tightened.
When using a crescent wrench apply the major pressure against the head of the crescent not on the jaw or bottom of the wrench .

Nice thorough video, makes it all look straightforward and clear. Now back to real life for someone who does not do this for a living. On my indoor unit, not a Mitsubishi, for starters I cannot even find the screws to attach the 4 wires to. The 40 page instruction booklet is amazingly confusing and incomplete, mostly leaving out a lot of things and seeming to assume that you are in the business as an installer. I can hardly believe that the mini split I purchased (Home Depot) is certainly not as easy as installation always appears in these RUclips videos. I have many questions, and am still slowly plugging away at it. I still have no idea why a lengthy instruction booklet has to leave so many unanswered questions. Incidentally, I am a fairly experienced person with many tools, and pretty experienced with electrical installations too. But this is my first mini split. I blame most of the problems on the poorly written instruction booklet. This will also require buying a good many more specialized tools for hundreds of dollars.

Decent video, but as an electrician I have a couple of observations:
You don't need a red devil with that snap in MC connector. There is a captive one built into the fitting and adding another doesn't allow the cable to fully seat.
Second, when wrapping stranded wire around a screw terminal, twist it counterclockwise when looking at the tip and then wrap it clockwise around the terminal. This will allow it to cleanly stay in the loop while you tighten it without the strands spreading. Alternatively, crimp a U or ring connector.
Third, when stripping stranded wire go up one AWG in size on your stripper. You risk knicking the outer strands if you don't, causing the same condition that you warned about with your diagonals.

a trick for the ground wire is strip it normal length (about 1/2") move down the wire 1/2" further with strippers but ONLY slide the jacket out flush out with the previous stripped portion.
so you have 1/2" of stripped wire and the 1/2" past will still have jacket flush to the end of wire itself, the strands stay together, you can twist it tighter and it terminal wraps much easier.

Amazing how clear and concise information can point someone in the right direction. Thank you! Just one quick question. Im looking at installing a different brand mini split but the line connections look very similar. In my case i have a 50amp feed line with a neutral which you didnt mention here. The mini split doesnt need the neutral? Just two 120’s and the ground?
Some inside units run on 120V so be careful you follow correct directions.

Was in a new office building today that uses ceiling cassettes. 32 one in each office. White mold growing on paper files, walls etc. 83% humidity. My guess was installer guessed on sizing and charging. Plan to leave this one alone.

The only problem that if found with this installation was that you needed to strip back the jacket on you metallic seal tight before installing the cable into your snap in connectors. it is very important to get a direct metal to metal connection on all metal parts of your system. the metal part of your seal tight must be bonded as well.
Great videos. Any harm in using a fused disconnect and.. a circuit breaker? I have a 18K BTU unit so 20 amps 20 amp breaker and 20 amp fuses. Also what are your opinions about a surge protective device like the Intermatic AG3000. Again thanks for all the great information, well done.

Wich would be about 3 to 4 feet above the the level of the internal unit and about 10 feet apart
The end of the jacketed MC Cable going to the JMC Connector should be cut about 1/2" exposing the armor. The locking fingers inside the JMC Connector is what holds and makes contact with the armor creating a bond. It is not properly installed if the JMC armor is not properly cut before inserting into the connectors.

Good video. I have a 3 car garage/ man cave fully insulated, ceilings too and even the garage doors. Garage is about 660 sq ft with 8ft celing hight. The lowest tempature during Christmas will be 37 degrees farenhight. My questions is if I install a 5000-7000w electric heater, I have to installed a 240v outlet too right or it can be just hardwired??
Eventually I will buy a minisplit system and be getting rid of the electric heater. Will I be able to use the 240v outlet previously installed for electric heater when I install mini split in future??
Also we will be getting an electric car down the road so I will need a 240v outlet to charge car so what will be the correct pathway for my projects, install a 240v right now for electric heater so I have heater in man cave before Christmas or maybe just use propane heater just for that day🙄 until I figure out what minisplit system to buy??

A neutral would only be needed if something was running on 120v. That is why a range has a neutral. This only needs the two hots and the hot becomes the path back for the power inbetween the phases of the frequency, thanks

You need a 3 pole switch on the inside to disconnect power to it so it can be serviced safely
Do all the wires you need come packaged with the system when purchased?
You missed the building penetration of electric - both the disconnect and the high voltage wires. These are important because of raintight disconnect box and inspection reasons.

I didn't want the serial number shown just in case a non-subscriber was stuck for a serial number on their unit and tried to use this one for a warranty claim or something. I doubt that would ever happen but just being on the safe side for my customer, thats all, ha ha thanks Ray Ray!

Hey Craig you should also mention that not all units are 240v. Some of the cooling only 9k units are 110v.
when using the EZ- in cable and stated connectors how does the shield get grounded ? Or should it? Details ? I've been reading a lot of confusing info about the shield grounding.

Good content! One question: looks like you are using 12/2 AWG wire for the 240V input power from circuit breaker. So, there is no need for the neutral wire? like 12/3 wire?
There isn't a neutral in a 240 volt set up. With 12/2 wire for example both wire get connected in your electrical panel to a 2 pole double breaker, one wire for each. You would need to put black tape on the white wire at the panel indicating that its a hot wire not a neutral as per code. Then your ground wire in the ground bus bar. Hope that answers your question.

I’m doing a mini split install now. I ran 14 gauge wire for my line voltage which is on a dual 20amp breaker. The whip I have has 10 gauge wire inside of it. Is it ok to run that to my line connections on my outdoor unit?
I may be a little late on this but here is what I think you’re asking. Yes the # 10 is ok. You can put large wire but never smaller than the over current protection allows.
What you need to look at is the 20amp breaker feeding the 14 gauge wire. That is incorrect. The minimum size on a 20 amp breaker is #12. By design the breaker is ment to be the weakest part of the circuit, placing under sized wire changes that and makes the wire the weaker part meaning the wire would fail before the breaker would trip. So protect the unit with the over current device called for on the name plate then size your wire correctlet from there.
FYI 12-2 wire is for 20 amp... 10-2
30 amp...14-2 15 amp. Shouldn't put 20 amp on 14 ever really. Easy fix though. Just switch out to 15 amp. Unless your heat pump is 15k+ btu. 12k and under runs on 15 amp breaker 14-2 wire. Good luck!
Central heating and air stopped working last year and I was wonder if a split unit could be hooked we're my old unit is and can it be hook to the floor vents (ductwork)?
A minisplit wouldn't be hooked to conventional ductwork from a standard split system. However, there are some minisplits, thanks!
Can you use MC cable instead of the Southwire EZ-IN? Does it matter if the wire is solid or stranded? Thank you.
depends on the local inspector. you can use 14-3 UF wire (grey outdoor romex) in most places and msot inspectors will let it pass since it is ourdoor rated. bonus it's chepa as dirt.

Why do you have a single head/zone with two conduits connecting to the condenser? Unless there is some exotic code in your locale, then you run your power AND your control lines into your disconnect and then your conduit to your condenser carries your control lines and your load lines & ground to the condenser?
Also when using stranded wire recommended practice is to use the appropriate crimp style connector. These units are very sensitive to voltage fluctuations.....dont forget your surge protector inside your disconnect switch....
I just installed my Mimi split and ran 14 gauge wire to a 20 amp breaker and the inside unit gave a P1 code which said that over or under power was the case. If I get a 12 gauge will it finally turn the condenser on and blow cold are ???? Please I need some insight. 👍
The voltage would need to be measured to determine the problem but with the power off, the wire should be replaced to 12 gauge anyway, thanks
How about if the outdoor unit is multizone? Do all 4 indoor units need to have the communication wire terminated inside the terminal in the outdoor unit?
I expected you to explain more about the entire electrical installation process from the Breakers box to the auxiliary box on the outside.
Look up how to wire a switch and breaker. This is maybe the easiest part of the instal... Maybe

That is it. The 4 wire heading to the indoor unit. In the case of the mitsubishi minisplit the S3 is the communication wire, thanks
Craig we just installed 3 brand new split units in our office building and we have to run half-inch non-metallic Flex conduit and 14 gauge solid copper thhn that is control wires for the split units.
MC cable Southwire Style is not recommended because the outside jacket on MC cable so teen and dries up and cracks and that's why MC cable South wire style is not recommended because the outside jacket PVC coating it's so thin it doesn't last long we were told by electrical inspectors underwriter.
so that is the rules in Pennsylvania for now.

Got ya, nice, thanks for letting me know Nurfet Alic! Flexible conduit does hold up very well and is proven over time. Just have to use the slim connectors on multi-zone systems since Mitsubishi puts the connector holes so close together, thanks!
I've never installed any jacketed mc, but I've seen a good bit and it's always cracked, bare metal showing and full of water. so I see why they don't allow it and to me it's more suited for indoor damp/wet areas out of any UV/sunlight.

Just for the record, just because the max fuse size was 20a doesn’t mean you needed 12ga wire. 14ga was probably sufficient.
william cairns I just installed mine and it gave a P1 code for over or under power and the condenser won’t turn on. I’m not a ac guy what did I do wrong oh yeah and I used a 20 amp breaker was that wrong too? Help please

My garage is fully insulated even the garage doors. WIll this work even though it says only for 600sq ft? Or should I get the 18000-BTU 230-Volt 21 SEER 900-sq Smart Ductless Mini Split Air Conditioner and Heater with 25-ft Installation Kit?
This one is for 900sq ft but I was reading that if I get an overzsize minisplit it won't work that good?? This one is $1500.

We bought a ductless air brand split it did not come with the wiring diagram and there's no color coding are all the wires basically the same gauge and as long as you put the red in the white in the same spot on indoor and outdoor you're good to go?
Usually you connect s1 outside to s1 inside, s2 outside to s2 inside, and s3 outside to s3 inside, they are usually the same gauge but you need to make sure the power wire from the disconnect to the outdoor unit is correct. If they did not supply a wiring diagram with a new unit, then I would contact the manufacturer and ask for one before wiring the unit though. You might be able to find one online if you google the model number and write wiring diagram, thanks

Romex or THHN wire is not rated for wet locations. You should be using THWN from your disconnect witch to your unit.

cannot say I've ever used jacketed MC, usually just go to liquidtight flex and not often metalic liquidtight flex.
I got a customer that ordered a mini split called yita home. I don’t typically mess with Milo splits too much. I’ve dealt with Sanyo Samsung lg mini splits easy peasy. This yita home however has no installers guide at all this one threw e5 error I have nothing to go on as to why there is an error or what it means. Power is what it should be connections are made well. Is e5 error the same
Across the board on all mini splits? If so this could mean I have a bad outdoor control board straight out the box.

I got a question about a future Mini Heat Pump Installation
The Electrical Data for the sized unit says:
Power Supply 208/230V
MCA 15
MOCP 20
Also the wiring diagram for the Main board shows this Heat Pump is wired with a 220V Base Pan Heater and a 220V Crank Case Heater.
My ambient temperatures will drop down to -20 Celsius and colder.
The whip that came with it is #10
I want to make sure I'm sizing everything correctly. So the Data Table is showing a 20 Amp fuse and the field wiring from the Main to the Disconnect would be 12 Gauge. That seems small. Can i jump up to a next size safely or just go with the required size?
12 gauge or even 10 gauge are sufficient for 20 amps. 12 gauge would be fine for a max fuse or max breaker of 20 amps, thanks

If the crancase heater and coil heater are included in the 20amp max then you must stay with a 20 amp breaker since the wiring is only rated up to 20 amps. If you are unsure if they are included in the 20 amp then contact the manufacturer to be sure, thanks

I’m pretty sure they are as the Serial Number for this unit includes these optional features in the literature that came with the mini split but it just a phone call away to make sure and to be certain.
