I feel bad that I rode my old 150RB for years without doing a single thing lol. I even rode it without oil for an entire day by accident. I've always felt that the 250x was tame even with all the mods...which is why I really liked it. I don't need ridiculous. Not anymore. Oh, who am I kidding. I WANT A CR500. Excellent review, my dude. Very much so.
If you haven't got a cr500 yet, get one, they're awesome. I love mine😊 they do vibrate a bit, they are unusual to kick, but wow, the torque🤣😂 mine is a 1986 and it is mental. 😁
These bikes look great, but I think I'll stick with the XR250R! Doing an engine rebuild, even once a year, is just too costly. The old XR engines go for years and then only need a piston and rings, which is not very expensive. Superb review by the way! All your reviews are excellent.
Great review. Just the info I was looking for on the crf250x, as I was thinking of replacing my old dr350 that I've been riding for the last 17 years with one. My wife would kill me putting that much into maintenance and doesn't sound like it would suit the slow technical riding I do in Colorado. I guess it's time to add a 2 stroke to the garage if I'm going to be rebuilding a bike every winter.
I’m gonna be honest, ever sense I saw this video 3 years ago I’ve wanted this bike. I have probably watch the video 20+ times over the course of 3 years. Just love all the info Ik so much about this bike because of this video. Just an amazing video nun the less.
I have a crf250x it's a 2012 with 20 hours I bought new in 2012 no problem yet I spend most my time on a crf230 I take the X out to the riding parks that are close Love your videos keep them coming!
Hello, I'm George and a 250X owner. My first Honda and first experience with SOHC. I just finished the valve job converting to steel so hopefully lasts longer than 20 hours. Previous owner didn't understand the importance of a clean air filter that is correctly sealed. I have grown to really like it I can feel the bike is really close to what I'm looking for on power but something you mentioned might help get it. I rebuilt the carb last year trying to fix my rough idle and hard starting problem. (LOL little did I know that soon came a valve job) Well during re-assembly I went with the stock position on the clip because no other mods have been made? I also stuck with stock jet. I also know exactly what I'm doing tomorrow! Great Video!

Ok forget it ,back to the CRF230 ha ha! wow i want a review like this on every trail bike i am intrested in ha ha!Best "fast" review of all information i want from a "do it all bike" great review!
Been putting off watching this one Jim but very entertaining as always! I think you sum it well by saying it could never replace the xr though. I just can't imagine giving up the reliability and ease of maintenance of the old xr's and dr's for the performance of more modern bikes. Great review!
I have a 15 year old 250x and just put on a new piston and head because the valve seats weren’t sealing properly. And that was the first ever doing anything rebuild related.
I have to disagree about reliability. 2004-2006 bikes had reliability problems. Honda made cam and valve changes. After 2007 the bikes became very reliable with routine maintenance, presuming you haven't bought one ragged out when you got it. Change the oil a LOT and keep your air filter clean. Stay out of the rev limiter. No problems. I think you do the bike a disservice in your evaluation, though I understand you are recounting your own experiences. I have ridden a 2007 for 3 years with no issues at all. It has shined on Rocky Mountain trails, held its own on a MX track, and struggled on eastern US twisty trails. I think it's a great bike overall, and an absolutely excellent western US trail bike.
Probably THE best review I have ever witnessed. I'm just wondering, like you said in the video the Xr250 is good on maintenance and its just a good bike overall. Would you recommend the Xr250 to a 16 year old kid who doesnt know much about dirt bikes and about maintenance? Thanks
Great review. I bought my 2006 250x 8 years ago from a guy that just rebuilt the motor, top end. Ride about 15-30 hours, around 250 miles a year and definitely feel lucky. Last year started smoking at start up so decided to order rebuild kit. Found out my cylinder was 269cc with an 07 R head and SS KibbleWhite Valves and Tie spring kit. Next rebuild might be complete motor, ouch
Okay, this is really a REVIEW, not just another "Hey look at me!" video. Lots of detail, I felt like I really got to know the bike, and you saved me a lot of wasted money. I live in New England. Do I really want a dirt bike that requires $800 a year in maintenance and can go 80 miles an hour on a 5-speed transmission? Hail, no. Thanks for taking time to put this all together and help us all out!
You know your onions, have a real sense of humor, and know how to make a superb video, congrats! I have a 2017 set up for enduro (I am that once a month rider, putting through single track, standing on the pegs...and yes I change the engine oil, trans oil, and clean the air filter every other ride ....its what old guys do when they retire, you'll get there one day) and don't have a fraction of your mechanical know how; but would chop open my airbox and uncork the exhaust in a heartbeat if it made a real difference; What do you think? Thanks for any tips, keep your reviews coming,
Excellent! Please do a video featuring all the modifications you did (in detail), to the bike to "open up" the breathing and make it run better! I recently bought a 2016 250X and am pleased with the bike overall but would would like to optimize it's performance and get it running as well as possible. Thanks for the great review. It's the best I've seen as far as detail and objectivity.
I think I'll just stick with my XR250R. Great and detailed review, on every point, as usual! After watching your review, I can see no reason to get a CRFx. Looks like I'll just ride the old XR for another 18 years Lol
@@brettkovak6344 came here to see if I should ditch the my xr400r for the crf250x. Guess not. Only reason I was considering is the wet weight is about 267lbs.
Hello Jim! loved your review!! i recently purchased an 04´ 250X that has probably been to hell and back.. bruised and battered.. the previous owner said he replaced valves with steel ones, replaced the cam shaft and piston. every time i ride it i'm thinking when is this thing gonna blow up?? but it just keeps going and going!!. very interested in seeing how long yours will go.. great video! i am your fan!! a Big thumbs up all the way from Lisbon, Portugal!!

Well I have a crf250x 2013 I have changed the jets cut the air box all the way open new fmf pipe on it and also a different battery and it literally rides like a dream
Hy, it is a very good video, with a lot of explanations, and good arguments. And I can understand well, with the google translation. Great playgrounds you have in US. Thanks. Kris
After doing a few mods to my crf230f, bbr piston, damper rods & a fox shock, I just wasn't happy. Found a like new 250x, had the suspension lowered and resprung, rejetted and now I can't get enough. The crf230f rides like a log wagon in comparison to the 250x. I'm pretty happy now with the crf250x as my main trail bike and only time will tell if the cost of maintaining it will be worthwhile ..
My dad had a XR200 ‘85 I think and it had DOHC then they neutered the XR for every other year since. I hated riding both when I was a kid but the ‘85 seemed kinda fast to me at the time and it was a 10 year old bike at the time
One of the best and succinct reviews of anything I have ever seen, literally all in one place. In any event, I was very disappointed to hear about the high maintenance of this bike. I just sold my 00' WR400f and was expecting to buy this in place of it. You mention other better bikes, reliable, etc., could you give some suggestion on models/years? Thanks!!!
I have a CRF250X 2005 and have had it since 2015 and not rebuild a thing. Regular service, big checkup once a year... It just goes and goes even though I have not exactly been nice to it. Either I am one of the lucky ones or it is a catastrophy waiting to happen, time will tell :-)
I bought a yz 125 and I love it. But I’m finding myself wishing I bought a crf 250 having grown up riding Hondas. I just do trail riding and heavy off-roading and it’s all I need. The yz gives you a complete rush when the powerband kicks in but I miss the even power delivery of a 4stroke. Not to mention I can get a California green sticker for it and ride year round. I guess the grass is always greener.
I'd love to see a comparison of the CRF250X and your modified CRF230F. I am in the process of deciding whether to upgrade my 230 or sell it and move to a 250X. I already have a fox shock and a fork rebuild, I might add a piston and a cam. I love the low seat height and tractor like torque but would like a little more suspension travel and a few more ponies.
I own a 2007 250x and 2009 230F. Both have been rock solid reliable. 230F has reworked suspension and carb work. Different bikes for different uses. I ride all over the country. Tight, twisty eastern trails = the 230F w/o question. Rocky Mountains and high desert = 250x. Plush suspension and lots of power. May be the perfect mountain bike. I also own a KDX220 and find it a great compromise between the two. I am 5'11" and 185 lbs. If you are taller than 6' go with the 250x. If you are under 5'7" go with the 230F. If you have $5k to spend and want a "perfect" bike let Jeff Fredette build you a KDX220. Love all three bikes but the Fredette KDX is beyond compare and the sweetest bike I have owned (I'm 67 with 52 years in the saddle). Lots of seat time on all but Overall the KDX is superb. Better than $9k KTM's by far. Just my opinion fellas.
The crf 250x is cheaper to rebuild than the yamaha though, 1 cam and 4 valves vs 2 cams and 5 valves.....so pick a colour or get your best deal. great vid btw
1. It’s a Honda 2. Yep still a Honda 3. I’ve had XR650R, the CRF450X and now the CRF250X and next to the CRF230F it’s the funnest bike I’ve ridden. It’s for a lot of power and it’s super light and nimble which means my old ass can hold on longer.
This was so awesome bro. I really hadn't seen you ride an R style bike on your trails yet, but dude...holy shit you are so god damn fast. There's no way in hell that I could keep up with you if we rode together again. Jfc you did so much sketchy shit hahaha. Also, amazing review. That was so damn perfect. I can't wait to see the day that you have at least 50k subscribers. Anyways, dope video :) Lets ride sometime when you come back home.
I have an opportunity to buy a 2005 crf250x for $1500. It looks a little beat up but I'm mostly worried that I'm too big for this bike. I'm 6'3 275lbs. What are your thoughts? What other bike should I like for? I will make any bike I buy street legal and mostly ride on dirt roads with some light off-roading
So I have a 2004 crf250x bought it for $1500 in 2016 the bloke owned it from new and took care of it I got it and I ride hard asf and about to do a rebuild wish me l luck
Which other bikes are better to have in terms of maintenance costs? I looking to get one CRF 250 R or X from 2006 to 2011. I currently own a CRF230F 2008, but I want something more powerfull and better equiped (suspensions)... (I will not sell my CRF230F)
I have a question and need your help! You said move the clip on the needle 2 positions richer. Where will the clip be. Which slot? Second???? Let me know thanks
Jim, do you think you could make a slightly more in-depth guide to uncorking this bike, or give a link to one? I've been considering one of these for quite a while to replace my ancient XR200R and I don't really do all that much technical low-RPM riding so I think it would be a fine bike.
+Jack Parker there are plenty of really great instructions out there. I just wanted to show whats involved. Just search for 250x CCC mods and Google will give you a huge list of great resources :)
I’m looking to upgrade from my first bike (A CRF 150r small wheel) because it’s just too small. I’m 6’0 at 150 lbs which is 30 lbs over the weight limit and I can barely even fit on it. Would you recommend this for an intermediate rider/ second bike? Or is there a better Honda I should shoot for? I have my own trails which are pretty bumpy and windy so I’ll definitely need something cushy in suspension but not too powerful. Thanks a lot for reading 🤙
This review Was great and details awesome. Was looking to see if You had a review for the crf230f. Been back and forth about which one to buy. Leaning to The 250x but not so sure if I want to deal with the maintenance. I ride with my lil man 8yrs old. Great review! I have a 2013 that I bought 3 years ago. The trails I ride are anywhere from sandy washes to rocks on rocks and steep. The low gearing works well for the extremely rocky areas. How is your bike doing since your last update?
What engine and transmission oil do you recommend and how often do you change it. A lot of forums recommend Rotella T because it's good oil and inexpensive. Any thoughts?

Love all three bikes but the Fredette KDX is beyond compare and the sweetest bike I have owned (I'm 67 with 52 years in the saddle). Lots of seat time on all but Overall the KDX is superb. Better than $9k KTM's by far. Just my opinion fellas.
I have the wr250r and it’s a great all around bike like my old XR400 bulletproof the wr250r has been known to go 70k without a problem
Again the best reviews!!!! keep it up man!
Awesome review
MAN your voice sounds like everide's! I was confused. Great video, great review, great editing! Keep up the good work!
agreed lol
Valve adjustment every 80ish hours for me. Yet to do a rebuild but this is my second year
What’s ur number let’s talk and FaceTime I’m really new and need help with checking valves bro and oils changed
Excellent video mate. Thankyou
Hey man! Could ya do an in depth review of the Crf230f?
Great video!
The crf 250x is cheaper to rebuild than the yamaha though, 1 cam and 4 valves vs 2 cams and 5 valves.....so pick a colour or get your best deal. great vid btw
I’m 15, 5’8”, and 140lbs with gear on. I have been researching this bike for a while and would like to here your output on my size to fitting on it.
Gabe's Crazy Adventures I’m 5’7 extremely skinny as long as you have experience you will be fine
Gabe Williams Productions I’m basically in the same situation
I’m 13 6’0 170
I'm jus 5,3 and I touch the ground tip toeing in one feet
1. It’s a Honda
2. Yep still a Honda
Good Job..........Well Done !!
Yha I have a 2009 crf250x and I love it
hey me too !!! 09
Same here just bought a 09 lol
I’m getting a 09 lol
And if you still have it how is it?
Excellent Bike for the buck
Great video, can you recommend a cheap bike with less maintenance 250cc to 450cc, doesn't need to be high performance
Great review!!!
On later model year bikes the needle isn't adjustable (1 clip slot only) and requires to replace to a different needle altogether.
10:37 oh look, another DRY CLUTCH ;)
+wll1500 hahahahhaa! Dang it he really schooled me good
So I have a 2004 crf250x bought it for $1500 in 2016 the bloke owned it from new and took care of it I got it and I ride hard asf and about to do a rebuild wish me l luck
+Frickin Jim's Affordable Adventures alright, I will do that! Thanks for telling me what to google :) have a good day!
Jack, did one a few weeks back, skipped the pink wire mod, but did most of the rest. Here's the video: ruclips.net/video/HoDcVyfBFg8/видео.html
I wish you could get your hands on a GPX FSE250E (air cooled w/ full sized wheels 18/21)
This review Was great and details awesome. Was looking to see if You had a review for the crf230f. Been back and forth about which one to buy.
Leaning to The 250x but not so sure if I want to deal with the maintenance. I ride with my lil man 8yrs old. I just don't want To but 230 and Then feel like it's to slow and then want 250.. any advice Would be great. 5`5" 180 lbs.
very good review
What's your best recommendation for a trail riding bike with a headlight? In the 250 range?
Great review! I have a 2013 that I bought 3 years ago. The trails I ride are anywhere from sandy washes to rocks on rocks and steep. The low gearing works well for the extremely rocky areas. How is your bike doing since your last update?
very useful dude cheers
What engine and transmission oil do you recommend and how often do you change it. A lot of forums recommend Rotella T because it's good oil and inexpensive. Any thoughts?
Joseph Divell I use mobil 1 synthetic in the crank side and whatever diesel motor oil is on sale at Walmart in the transmission side
Frickin Jim's Affordable Adventures . Thanks! What weight oil on each side? Great review by the way. Just picked up a 2005.
Mobil 1 5W30 on both sides. Never had an issue. Check and change the oil a LOT. Keep the air filter clean. Bike is rock solid.
love the reviuw but what abouth the crf 250 rally?
