LoL! Santa Anna Couch grass sounds like after you mow it you can smoke it. I recommend you use the bagger. Good video about the mower. Thanks for the review!
This mower is a beast. 20 yrs and the belt just went. Can't find a replacement. Borrowed a new mower from my neighbor and it doesn't do the job as well. Newer mowers are light and don't cut as well. That's just my opinion. I think they've discontinued most of their walk behind mowers so parts are hard to get especially for older models.
I hope John Deer is reading this hear I go I love this lawnmower had it for 6 years the punishment my lawnmower has had is amazing I would buy another one in a hart beat God bless John Deer I live in 🏴
All mowers sold in the US are required to have either a blade brake or a blade clutch. Blade clutches are really nice because the engine can be running without the blade turning. The JS26 mower is similar to Brute mowers sold in the US, like the 7800886. Same deck, same Quantum engine.
Mow the grass at a high height for a prettier grass and fertilize , I have learned this after killing my first sod yard , and when I moved to my new home some 17 years ago of mowing and keeping the height between 3" and 4" high it's always done well . Let's not to forget good watering measures to go along with this . Googling will help you .
I don't know what I'm doing wrong. But I can't start it. I saw on the handle, I think on step 4, you're supposed to turn something. Almost looks like a key. I know there is a lever next to the handle and I tried that. I just can't believe there isn't a primer! Looks like a beautiful machine and you put up a great video!
I have been running the exact same mower for 17 years. The drive assist seized up several years ago, and now it's a straight push mower. But it starts, runs, and cuts grass.
Just FYI: I believe the Easy Start from B&S incorporates a bump on the camshaft to lift the exhaust valve a bit in order to release part of the compression to make pulling the recoil starter easier. Easier pull means a quicker pull, thus drawing fuel from the carb easier. It's not really a feature of the carburetor.
So it's a year and a half old now, still going well? Down to McCulloch or John Deere. McCulloch for price (and built by Hasqvarna) or pay $100 more for the MowMentum, Side discharge (probably never use) and 22" deck versus 18". The 30mm height and weight seem to be putting me off the JD, though I can see your daughter can easily handle it.
Hi there,Thanks for posting this. How is it in the slopes? Have you experienced any issues with the gear system? Also, just worried about the plastic handle for pushing. Is it still in tact? I'm thinking of buying the JS38 and I have under an acre to mow... Any thoughts? Cheers!
Thank you for your quick reply! How big is your block if you don't mind me asking? Have you got any slopes? I have been reading online about problems with the crankshaft being bent (maybe to do with 3 in 1 cutting blade... I'm happy though, you didn't have any issues with it. Cheers, Eli
i bought this mower 2 years ago and has been nothing but trouble. the no primer start is terrible, the cabruator floods on its own, twice i had to take it for warranty. The mower its also terrible for cutting high grass, the output to the bag keeps plugging up. never again would i buy a john deere again.
I just bought a used one off of a fb classified page & am having the same trouble. Getting harder to start each time after emptying the bag which needs doing before even half full or starts leaving grass clumps everywhere. If I head into grass that's a little longer it starts sputtering & will stall if I don't tip back for a few seconds. I got blisters on my hands holding the handle in the forward position. I have a pretty big yard 1/3-1/2 acres at least so I don't need the hassle of having to stop every pass to dump the bag or to go over ever pass twice to pick up the cut grass that it leaves behind.
Obviously john deere never tested this lawn mower before putting it on the market. Lucky for you, you bought it used, i bought it new and costed over 400. I have never been able to fill bag, it needs to be emptied half full, or else it clogs, which is a pain. Now i try to cut grass weekly to have less problems. I hope i can be of some help but this is what i did to make mine work better with regards to starting and not puttering out on high grass or cutting on a slope. i once took it in for warranty but cant do that now unless i want to spend 150 which no way for this mower but the biggest problem with them is the float under the carb i find. i find if you change the spark plug every year, plus spray the inside and around the choke with carb cleaner, keep spraying until it almost stalls and then spray more and now for the biggest help, you need to tap on the float which is a little round metal under the choke area, you cant miss it. Tap it several times, the float assembly inside is probably binding up. So tap that, change spark plug and spray carb cleaner all over the carb and inside it. I did that this year after it was stalling every minute and being a pain to start. Now it starts on first try and does not stall. I know it will act up again but hopefully not for a long time.
+Mntside Thanks for the tips. I bought it used but still paid $110.00 which I couldn't afford. Mine needs mowing about every 5 days as it is...sometimes more often if we get more rain. I have arthritis in my hands so if it doesn't start right away it can become painful yanking on that rope. I'll try the things you suggested & hopefully it will remedy the situation. Thanks again.
i really hope that it will help fix the problem, sounds like the previous owner just passed the head ache on to you. I thought of selling mine but didn't feel right about passing on the problem, i just want to get another few years out of mine before i buy something else, won't be a john deere that is for sure. It would be nice to hear back from you if you experience any improvement with the mower. I also forgot to mention to keep that air filter clean as possible. Ok good luck, lawn mowers can be really aggravating when they are not working properly.
Just the tutorial i needed after buying a used one. Thanks!

What is the lever for? I just got one for free works perfect but can’t figure out what it’s for
I wish they still made JD push mowers in the us! :(

I Have The JS 26 I Love It
those carbs are great!!
Don't be so harsh ...good video mate!

great video keep it up
I really miss these push mowers, sure they are no Honda, but I feel nostalgia just using it
Made in USA?

No problems since purchase. Handle is still intact. MowMentum is belt driven so cheap to replace. Mine is still on the original belt.

Great vid thanks!
I have the JS26 and the self propel cable broke. Need to replace it. Looked for video to replace, can't find it. Anyone have any ideas?
You forgot to mention ..., how does it cut compared to the Honda HRX
Good video very helpful!
No mods I'm aware of. You could remove the height adjuster assembly, but I wouldn't myself.
Hate the dust that inundates because of the fabric

No good.
Hope the next mower you get is better. 👍

The dead man handle is good and annoying I fell once while mowing and I let the handle kill the mower and I did not heart me or the mower
I wouldn't know where it's been made. Wouldn't surprise me if China was the country of origin. Seems well made though and hasn't given me any trouble.
I have one someone give up on it & i clean carb& spark plug frech gas⛽️/ run 🏃like a champ 💪👍🤛👊🤜👌
