I must say, those were some great backup singers! It just goes to show that this song is not an easy one to sing, and only those with exceptional vocal skills can do it justice. While watching the performance, I felt like I was watching the official music video, except that Big Mama was not there as their ghost singers. Big Mama has the ability to sing this song perfectly anytime of the day. Anyway, nice try SISTAR!

The rapping part is really unnecessary. Bora should just try singing just like what JuHyun (from Spica) did. Still, no one can beat Spica in this cover. They're just too flawless.

씨스타의 명곡 박살내기
They're good. I've checked out Spica, and they're good as well, but, in my opinion, neither of them can beat Big Mama.

So this is my first time watching this version of break away and I prefer the Spica cover. It felt more natural. I enjoyed it until the rap. I personally felt that it was unnecessary and just made it weird. Soyu did good same with Hyorin. This was back when dasom couldn't sing so yeah. But yeah I did enjoy this. But I did not like that rap. But I prefer the spica version because it felt more natural.

So...this version was mentioned in a comment on the Spica version. I won't get into the this or that directly, and I did read everybody's comments up to this point. There were three things here tho' that struck me: The rap...why? That was extraneous/unnecessary, & it did not add anything to the song; There were three additional background singers (on the left) and there were a couple of times where only one of the Sistar's was singing but there were harmonies from the backing vocalists - nothing wrong with that as it was clearly an arrangement decsion; The band here, and this is important, was just not as polished or strong as the band on the Spica version. That band had a little something extra and it felt like they were into the song. There was a groove/feel and there was that push-pull dynamic that you want between singers and the band. Here I think the band was - for lack of any other word - flat and did no favors to the ladies with the song.
There was one comment from four years ago that I have to address tho' because I think there was a fundamental misunderstanding about how you go about arranging a song when you have five singers of the caliber of Spica. Here's the comment in question:
"...here are two main singers hyorin aka Korean beyonce done the highnotes 3:28 and she done it without the help of someone cant say the same for spica! and also soyou also sang the highnote 3:48 where boa and bohyung had to harmonise to help each other out."
***Update Edit - with the return of Big Mama it should be noted that they also pair up vocalists in their arrangement, so the fact that Spica does it as well is actually true to the original arrangement.***
If you know Spica's vocals then you know Boa, Bohyung and Narae can easily handle any high parts by themselves, so that is not the reason. One of the things Spica did consistently in their songs was pair up combinations of two singers for harmonies (and Boa & Bohyung harmonizing are pure dynamite as any Spica performance where they did it and all of the KEEMBO songs show). That was exactly what they did on their version using four of the singers in various combinations as a dynamic part of the arrangement. It is that specific section of the song that gives their version the emotional lift and drive that takes the song home - starting with Narae & Bohyung and finishing with Boa & Narae.
If you have singers at that level - and Spica was unquestionably a vocal group - then you use them.This may be a subtle musicians point but I felt it had to be said.
Yeah the rap is not necessary in this song, they just try to find a way that Bora could fit in. It's not like she can't sing, but most of the time she chooses not to sing due to lack of confidence and she just wants to focus on her job. The company could have left her out of the performance, but they're just rookies back then, so that's not a good choice for a girl group.
@@nguyenhatien1787 It's interesting to note that Spica did not try to create a rap for Shiyun, instead she had multiple parts inside a song. It does speak to the "Idol culture" (which I do not care for) of specific and designated roles for each member. In the 60's American Girl Groups there was typically the lead singer and the two (sometimes three) backing singer (same for the men actually - with The Temptations a notable exception). The positive of the K-Pop GG's is the multiple singers with talent all getting a chance to shine. If they can sing, then sing.
I will note that when rapping and singing in a song hit the charts in the US it was the artist doing it all (Blondie "Rapture" & Teena Marie "Square Biz"). That continued for the most part through the 80's but as Rap became a more commercial force the "guest Rap" on Pop songs became more common.

여긴 ㅋㅋㅋ 도입 색소폰부터 삐걱대네ㅋㅋ
하동균이 보컬연습때 발성연습을 엄청했다고 하더라. 결국 그 성량이 마이크 뚫고 나와야 음색도 더 돋보이는거고 청자들에게 울림을 주는 노래를 할 수 있지. 소유 효린이 노래 잘한다고는 하지만 경지에 이른 티가 전혀 안날정도로 발성이 안돼있음.
dasom was really nervous doing this legendary song but she did very well
3분48초 애드립을 시도했다는것만으로도 소유 칭찬함
고생들 했는데 이노래의 핵심은 목소리도 중요하지만 화음과 코러스 인데 뭔가 많이 부족해 보이네요

Break away를 잘하려면
성량.에드립은 기본이고
애초에 4명이 같이 부르기 때문에 화음도 맞아야 하고 가사 중에 니가 또 생각나 에서 "생" 을 가성으로 부르지 말고 그냥 앞에 음 처럼 진성으로 질러야 하는데 이 무대는 화음도. "생"도 성량도 다 망침

ML KAK T-ARA sang this too though I'm Queen's I can say SPICA did better than T-ARA and T-ARA did better than Sistar. If you visit their performance a lot of comments comparing them to Spica. However T-ARA and Sistar have been recognized than SPICA knowing they are a vocal group.
you guys need to stop hating on sistars version of break away, they sang this in 2011 and obviously back then they weren't as good and improved as they are now.

Rainier Surratt I have thought differently. I accept the version of the SPICA is singing live over the chorus SISTAR will rely on to help. But although I do like meat than it's unique sound of SISTAR SISTAR only.
And I do not think that anybody's better not to compare.
Somying Thongyod spica did not sing with back up singers actually. they sang it all them selves and did the harmonies themselves.
I'm sorry, I'm using a little English. It might make sense out not so good.
The conclusion is that both bands are uniquely their own.
