    My go to travel kit. Z7 + 14-30 f/4 + 24-200. Stopped down two thirds of a stop, A1 prints are just fantastic. Easy to take on the plane as carry-on luggage due to weight restrictions and comfortable to carry round all day with a drink bottle and extra clothing (as I did in my recent visit to Melbourne) . You really can’t go wrong 🙂. Cheers. Derek.

    Hey Matt - those marks at 14:20 are locate marks. Chances are there is going to be some road or utility work at that location and the services running through need to be identified so the crew doing the work can't claim ignorance if they break something, hah.
    They are color-coded to indicate what kind of utility is present. I'm not sure if Australia is different from the US, but I'm used to seeing the following:
    RED - electrical cables/conduit, generally power related
    YELLOW - gas, oil, petroleum, steam
    ORANGE - telecommunication cables, usually fiber these days but also coax
    BLUE - water
    GREEN - sewers and drainage
    PURPLE - reclaimed water, irrigation, etc

    I was surprised to use this lens in a work assignment with results beyond expectations. With good natural light, this lens is awesome! When I needed a clear background I used a 1.4 lens, but, to my surprise, most of the photos were taken with the 24-200. If you are not a bookeh freak and have natural light, the quality of this lens is more than enough for working. This is not just a lens for landscape and walking around. It can actually be used in shoots with good light available. I would never expected that of a super zoom!

    I have been using this lens since it was released. A great walkabout lens sharp but does have some distortion in the corners at 24mm. I have the f2.8 24-70 and 70-200 but this lens is used more often as it weighs about a quarter of the weight of the other two. Great little lens and I love it!

    Greetings from Malaysia. For it's versatility alone, everything is forgiven with this lens. It's a perfect lens for all types of genres of shooting. Excellent for beginners like myself. As time goes on, I will slowly obtain those fast aperture lenses, there's no rush in that. Important thing is the learning with this lens. You learn compositions, reach and the science of light when using this lens. Like Matt said, you need to fiddle with the shutter speed and little with the ISO when using this lens. Shooting videos with my Z6II is not bad at all? Hey...it takes filters! Is that great? For the masses, this lens is heaven sent. I'll be taking this lens when I hike Mt Kinabalu in Sabah when condition permits due to Covid. Thanks Nikon. Thanks Matt for the excellent review - Hisham

    I replaced my 28-300mm AF-S lens with this as soon as it became available to use as my hiking lens. Although I miss the extra reach with the 28-300mm, the 24-200mm is much sharper. I do wish it held to f4 a little longer when zooming in, it hits 6.3 pretty fast. All said I feel it is a good value, and I find I use it more than what I thought I would as it's just so convenient.

    A recent money off deal in the UK persuaded me to give it a try. I’m very happy with it, the close focus was a bonus. I now take it & the 14-30 when out for a photo walk with a Z7 & hardly feel the weight in my backpack. Before the Z series I was losing faith in Nikon & was still using my D600 & old lenses with no desire to upgrade, but now they are producing products I want to buy. I just have my fingers crossed for an adapter that gives autofocus with D lenses but I won’t hold my breath.

    Loved this video, if for no other reason that I got this lens about 2 months ago as a 'gap' lens until Nikon releases the 24-105mm and 100-400mm (or if they come up with a moderate priced 70-200mm). Was going to sell later or keep as a walk around, however, it turns out I love this lens and it and the 14-30mm are the only two I have, and will probably stay that way for quite awhile. The sharpness is unbelievable - it's a keeper. And glad to hear your concern for her exposure to radiation, very observant!

    Thanks Matt, good to see a review of something I might be able to afford/need. I'm going to date myself a bit, but my original D70 came with a 24-200, and it still works just fine on my D850. It's compact, light, and while it's a plastic body lens, its taken a fair amount of abuse over the years w/o any issues. I've often wished there was a modern replacement for it. Now maybe there will be.

    I have it and shoot it on Z6 and Z7. Overall sharper than I expected, the aberration is easily fixed, and light enough to carry all day. Trade-offs? Sure, but far offset by the range and usability. My travel kit for an overseas trip this winter will be the Z7, 24-200mm, and the 14-30mm, the new 16mm Obscura lens from Lensbaby, 3 spare batteries, and maybe the 50mm f/1.8.

  • @TheWillRogers
    @TheWillRogers 3 года назад +2

    A lot of complaints about the lens are softness and aberrations in the corners, this is one of the reasons I've thought it would be a perfect part of a two lens travel kit for the Z50, a 10-20mm (that doesn't exist) and the 24-200. These dx mode images are only a megapixel fewer than the Z50, so they'd look very similar.

    I love it, it lives on the front of my new Z7, and lived on my previous Z6. My all around everyday lens. It works for me because I only do landscape, but I'll grab any wildlife or bird shots I can if I'm close enough to make it work. I've done some nice macro as well. I'm just a casual photographer having fun. Part of a kit is a good way to go, but by itself it's $900 US dollars on Nikon USA, but worth it. Nice job on the vid!

    I sometimes don't understand why a small apperture is such a downside for many people. Yes, you need it for a blurry background/portraits - there it's important - but when you shoot with F2 or F1.4 at night (to gather more light) you end up with a very narrow depth of field. So the F4-F6.3 with stabilization could also be better in this case ...

    Hi Matt - 7 weeks thus far using this lens on a thru-hike of the PCT. While I have only been able to view images on the camera screen at night in the tent, the results have been impressive. Paired with the Z7II, the images have rich depth and plenty of resolution and sharpness. This lens is far better constructed than the 18-200 DX I used to pair with my D500 on previous outings. I have also experimented using extension tubes with mixed results (focus can be difficult to attain). Highly recommend this lens for travel. It is a bit heavy for long-distance backpacking - the 24-70 might be a better choice, but the extra reach has been used frequently, so I will keep lugging it!

    You asked about the lines in the street. Not sure of the meanings where you are but here in florida that would be how deep the lines are buries and the colors indicate different items. Example potable water is blue, power & cable is red, gas is yellow, communication is orange, purple is irrigation, pink is temp survey, white is proposed excavation. The meaning my differ in different regions.

    Another timely video! Along with the PD camera clip I commented on in the other video, I also recently got the Z24-200 (and also a refurb Z50). I love it paired with my Z50 (I also have a Z6ii along with F-mount Sigma 24-70 & 70-200/2.8's - and FTZ) and it's a perfect travel/hike/bike setup. Small, but powerful!

      Did you know if this 24-200 is better on Z50 (crop sensor) with 50-250mm(dx)? Yes, I know, the 24-200 will be 36-300 equivalent on Z50, but the image quality is better using 24-200 on Z50?

    • @RandyArellano
      @RandyArellano 2 года назад +1

      @@ionutvladI never used a 50-250. But from everything I've read, the 50-250 is an excellent lens IQ-wise. The main reason I got the 24-200 at the time was because it is a full frame (FX) lens that I could use on the Z50 or my Z6ii.
      I've since 'upgraded'. I went all FX, sold the Z50, and got a Z7ii. Then sold my Sigmas and the 24-200 and got the Z 24-120 & Z 100-400.

    I already have Tamron 28-200/2.8-5.6 for my Sony, so when I got Nikon Z6 with the new 24-200 lens I put them to test. I wanted to use Nikon Z6 to test both lenses to make comparison as fair as possible. I used Techart TZE-01 adapter on Nikon body and mounted Tamron. To my surprise both lenses focused pretty similarly in most of the focal range, naturally Tamron had more issues focusing at 200mm.
    At the wide end there aren't many differences in image quality both lenses work well, both corrected in software, both look similarly. The difference is 24mm/4 for Nikon and 28/2.8 for Tamron.
    At 200mm both lenses sometimes focus on background instead of the focus area, which is likely a problem of Z6 rather than the lenses. Tamron is a bit sharper at 200mm as well as a bit faster f/5.6 vs f/6.3. Tamron also seems to suffer less from flare and glare. Not much other differences in image quality.
    The moral of this story, though Nikon lens is pretty decent, Tamron is still better being brighter and sharper, and priced significantly lower. If you own multiple systems as I do you may just adapt lenses rather than buying native ones.
    P.S. I also tried Z5. It's a completely different story. Z5 focusing is so bad I wouldn't recommend adapted lenses for that body.

    I was shooting away recently with Z14-30 on my Z6 unaware I’d left it in DX crop mode. Thought the view at 14mm didn’t seem ‘ultra wide’ for some reason!

    I recently got the lens to make it easier to get fleeting shots, mostly candids, one would likely miss if you had to change lenses. While not as contrasty as the 70-200 f/2.8, its performance is adequate and the ability to go wide at a flick of the wrist is wonderful. For theatrical shoots I've typically had two cameras around my neck to quickly switch from wide to closeups indoors. I have used this lens indoors for theatrical shoots and it enabled me to get nice shots I would have otherwise missed. But, being a slow lens, dramatic stage lighting with lots of shadows did result in more unusable images due to motion blur. Actors tend to move about quite quickly. The tradeoff is more creative freedom but greater chance of motion blur, versus fewer interesting shots but fewer discarded images.

    • @skyrunr

      You're simply picking ultimate quality (corner sharpness, less CA, and F4) over ultimate functionality. I think most people could justify both. The 24-70F4S is a great buy, PROBABLY THE BEST VALUE Z lens buy as a used open-box item.

    I have 24-70 f4 on Z7ii. For a landscape shooter who doesn't want the weight or the cost of the 70-200 F2.8 there is no other long lens option for Z mount right now. I have been tempted to buy it for the long end, but I am holding out for 70-200 f4 Z mount. Please Nikon.

    I think a good counter argument to this lens is buying a Z50 kit instead. You cover more range. If only the Z50 used EN-EL15 batteries, and let you remap Fn buttons to sub-menu items! Given those crop results I'm actually tempted to try a 50-250 on a Z7II. ;)

    A question for you Matt....... I bought the 70-200 x with my Z7ii. a fine lens. I am thinking now that I should have bought the 24-200. A also have an older Tamron 18-400, but I have to use the FTZ, which can be awkward at times. Would it be worthwhile swapping my 70-200 for a 24-200 ?

  • @5RustyBin
    @5RustyBin Год назад

    My Z glass comprises of the z24-200 which is my everyday goto, the z100 mc macro for my up close stuff, and the z85 1.8 prime which is plenty wide for me and ideal for lower light situations. Been toying with the idea of a wide angle lens also but tbh the 24mm is probably suitable enough for most of my needs. Id say the biggest drawback of the 24-200 versus the 24-70kit lens is the fixed f4 aperture is nice on the 24-70, but I forgive it - simply because bumping the iso up a couple of notches really shows little to no degradation in quality. Overall its a great bit of kit.

    Based on your review, I think I'm going to get it. It's too bad I just bought a Z5 body and thought the FTZ adapter would facilitate using my old Nikon AF lenses. It works good, but no Auto Focus, darn. Also, it would have been nice to get a "Kit" deal but my timing was off a bit. Anyway, thanks for the great review. --Clary

    Nikon Rumors posted some data a little while back from a site that tested the Z lenses and did the "Recommended", "Meh" and "Not recommended". They damned the DX 50-250 lens with a Not recommended and I've gotten some of my best shots with it. What the hey?! Anyway, I finally, after months of of back order, received my 24-200mm. I've used it mainly on the Z50 where it weighs as much as the Z50. :) I do need to put it on the Z6II (kinda planning on taking on a upcoming trip - I think it would be perfect on the motorcycle where room is a premium).
    I have not really wrung the 24-200mm out like you have, but so far I'm very pleased with it. For my everyday use case (i.e. dog walks) the Z50 & 50-250mm tends get the nod.

    • @ionutvlad
      @ionutvlad 2 года назад

      Do you feel that image quality with 24-200 on Z50 is better that 50-250mm? Could compare in that way? Yes, I know, the 24-200 will be a "36-300mm" equivalent on Z50.
