- One of the sweetest treats we can produce on the Grow To Gather Homestead is Spruce Tip Syrup, thanks to our lovely stands of conifer trees. In this video Frankie-Lou demonstrates how easy it is to preserve the unique delicious flavour of spruce tips in a luscious syrup that can be enjoyed all year long. Topics covered include: relative weights of ingredients, mastication and syrup stability.
I want to try this one too! I love spruce tips!
So interesting! Thank you!! I watched this on the Facebook group. After you posted it!
That’s awesome! I hope you will give it a try
Can you do this at any time of year? I have a giant spruce in my front yard so I'd love to try this!
I’m pretty sure the tips need to be young and soft in order to release lots of fluid. I suppose you could give it a try though
So you put the jar outside for only 1 week before putting it in a dark cupboard?
That’s what I do, but you don’t have to. It just gets the process going a little faster
If they've been canned, how long are they good for after opening?
I’m not sure…..we always use it so quickly that it really doesn’t have time to go bad!
brown sugar is just white sugar with a small amount of molasses added
Funny, I was just talking to a friend about that the other day when we watched this video
Yes, you need the additional moisture that brown sugar offers so that it can start breaking down.
