  • Adam Landau presents 90 minutes of highlights from the world's largest international airshow and the international celebration of the RAF centenary: the Royal International Air Tattoo 2018. Biringing you the highlights of the flying displays, ground and cockpit footage allow you to re-live the remarkable Ukrainian Su-27 Flanker, the pinache of the Frecce Tricolori and the majestic Battle of Britain Memorial Flight - along with virtually every other aircraft to fly at the show, and more.
    CORRECTIONS AND CLARIFICATIONS: as with almost any amateur production of this scale - especially one that was narrated on-the-fly - there are a few inevitable mistakes and slips of the tongue. So far, we've spotted:
    16:30 - Breguet has been mispronounced phonetically. It should have been pronounced "Bre-gey".
    21:40 - The AdlA's Rafale C solo display is based at St. Dizier, not Nancy-Ochey.
    41:10 - Some commenters have misunderstood comments on the F-35, which are not intended to criticise either the aircraft or the display team. A full "demo profile" had not been practiced or approved by this stage. Thankfully, full F-35 demonstrations in 2019 and beyond have been much better. Live commentary errors included announcing the wrong manoeuvre, or saying the aircraft was approaching from the wrong direction.
    48:30 - The Vampire is not, of course, the RAF's first single engine fighter, but its first single engine jet fighter.
    1:21:30 - The C-27 is a "J" varient, as per the caption, not a "G" varient, as per the narration.
    1:24:00 - Blue Impulse do not draw their heart bottom to top, it seems the Frecce Tricolori are the only jet team to do so.

    Fantastic thank you! Even now looking back to 2018 is a treat, maybe especially now with many of the major shows cancelled or massively reduced. You touched on something I have long said which is that the Rafale is highly underrated, it is nothing less than a remarkable achievement in fighter design, technology and capability and perfectly suited to the French in every way, its like if the perfect AI formed the perfect fighting aircraft around a french pilot and was told in no uncertain terms to be sexy.

      Looking back to 2018 certainly does make me appreciate what we took for granted pre-pandemic. Luckily, with many major airshows starting to return, I hope to have several similarly impressive events featured in this year's series Airshow Dispatches.

    This was a fantastic watch, Red Arrows, spectacular as ever, loads of great stuff, some nice liveries, the Ukrainian livery was my favourite, coupled with a nice low pass 😍 that blue digital camo 👌🏻 the Jordanian show was great because u got to see from inside the cockpit and see how difficult it was to perform those maneuvers, u can see them fighting the planes, coupled with the fact that they are not full military, superb, Typhoon, A400m Atlas and the Chinook are always a crowd pleaser 😎👌🏻

    WOW, those F18 upgrades are significant. I've seen them flown at several airshows over the years, but NEVER like that. And I wanna tell ya, even with the limitations on the F35 shows, when I saw (FELT) that thing take off the first time on full AB, I was impressed. It literally shook the ground, and vibrated your guts.

    Wow!!! That performance by the Red Arrows is just mind boggling to say the least. Can you imagine the amount of insane training they probably go through to successfully pull those aerobatic maneuvers off without dying every time they perform????? They must be in full flight training mode from the time they crack their eyes open in the morning and even in their sleep!!🤘🤘🤘 It'd be hilarious to walk into their barracks and find em all asleep, but talking through the maneuvers with the little model planes on a stick while they're asleep. Hahahahahaha!!!!

    The Couteau Delta patrol is something out of this world though. Unfortunately they have now ceased to exist due to budget constraints in the French Air Force as i understand it, but, having had the oportunity (indeed the privilege) to witness them first hand at la Ferté Alais, i can confidently say that they were the best fighter demo team i've ever seen. With the f-35 its kind of sad that the display team did not put in a little more effort to showcase such a powerful jet like this. It would have been great to see a nice display from the most modern aircraft at the show.

    • @ThisisFlight
      @ThisisFlight  5 лет назад +5

      It is not a lack of effort; the F-35 is not currently permitted to fly most aerobatic manoeuvres at the moment and the team's pilots are neither trained nor qualified to do so.
      This is absolutely normal, and it is right and proper that the demonstration capabilities of a new aircraft are ramped up gradually... first, a few informal flypasts (2014-15), then a Heritage Flight team (2016-17), then a Heritage Flight team doing mini-demonstrations (that's where we are now) and finally a full Demo Team, which we expect next year.

      @Adjunct Instructor I'm not sure how you could possibly come to that conclusion given I spent the WHOLE of my previous reply defending the F-35? I certainly don't defend its appearance here, which was utterly dire, but for the record I think it's a fantastic jet and its full demonstration profile (now that the team have matured enough to fly one and the previous restrictions have been lifted) is utterly superb. This is, however, an airshow review channel, and when presented with a display I'd rather not have had to endure, I generally say so without bias or hesitation. That doesn't remotely imply that I dislike its country of origin, or that there aren't legitimate reasons why the display was poor, it just means that I got bored, and thus it wasn't a very good act to feature at what is, ultimately, an entertainment event. You can try and read something else into it if you're embittered and want to pick a fight, but there really isn't anything else there.

    • @armoredspain7053
      @armoredspain7053 Год назад

      @@ThisisFlight he really has a problem. The Aviojet nickname came as a sort of international niclname for the export countries where spain isnt spoken. In Spain is called Mirlo (Blackbird) and in South America is called Culopollo (chicken-like ass). PÁ has to get rid of that guy, not only for that but also for commenting the exhibition as if it was a football match.

    • @ThisisFlight
      @ThisisFlight  Год назад

      That seems like... an over-reaction. "Aviojet" is the aircraft's official name, used worldwide. Even the Spanish Air Force's own website confirms that the C-101's primary name is "Aviojet", on a Spanish-language webpage (ejercitodelaire.defensa.gob.es/EA/ejercitodelaire/es/aeronaves/avion/Airbus-C-101-Aviojet-E.25/ ).
      I'm not denying that the C-101 has other names too, but when PA's commentator uses the word "Aviojet", he isn't wrong.

    • @armoredspain7053
      @armoredspain7053 Год назад

      @@ThisisFlight i can tell by the people i know who worked on that project that it was called Aviojet only when it was planned to see export. The Website might call it Aviojet, but the Museum calls it Mirlo.

    • @ThisisFlight
      @ThisisFlight  Год назад

      Fine. But Aviojet is still an official name used by the manufacturer and by the Spanish Air Force. Call it an Aviojet, call it a Mirlo, it really doesn't matter - they are both correct and PA's commentator is not wrong.
      As for this channel, nowadays I always try to use the official designations of individual operators. Hence I would say "Fighting Falcon" and never "Viper", "RAF Atlas C.1" and never "RAF A400M", "MiG-29" and never "Fulcrum"... and yes, "Aviojet" for the C-101.

    The F-35 display wasn't so bad, was it?

    • @ThisisFlight
      @ThisisFlight  4 года назад

      The individual manoeuvres were pretty good, the problem was the gaps between them and the fact the commentator had no clue what was going on, which you don't get to see in this video.

    • @meertenwelleman4600
      @meertenwelleman4600 4 года назад

      Apparently no rehearsel?

    • @ThisisFlight
      @ThisisFlight  4 года назад

      Certainly not at Fairford. The problem was that on Friday the F-35 was doing the "Heritage Flight" display of three solo flybys (all it was cleared to do at the time) but without the warbirds. The gaps between manoeuvres were designed for two warbirds to do a flyby each of their own, but they weren't there! So it was just dead air.
      This also meant the formation part of the display didn't happen, so to fill the whole display slot, the F-35 pilot just repeated the solo part of the show three times over. So a 15 minute display slot consisted just of a take-off, and the same three manoeuvres repeated three times over.

    If I may say so, the Royal Air Force wasn't the first independent air arm the world had ever seen. I'm terribly sorry to point this out, but the Finnish Air Force as an independent air arm was officially founded about two weeks before the Royal Air Force. With a grand total of one (1) aircraft to begin with, and one must mind the preceding Army Air Corps.
    Still. Finnish Air Force was the first. Deal.
    RIAT 2018 and 2019 Bader Trophies are just waiting for the next one to grab them in 2021.

    • @ThisisFlight
      @ThisisFlight  4 года назад

      This is a subject of much debate, and both sides claim to be the "first". The British argument is that although the Finnish Air Force, as an organisation, predates the RAF by three weeks, it was an air force in name only, and did not become a de facto air force until some years after the RAF was formed. Personally I find the Finnish claim slightly more convincing than the British claim, but the RAF (and most Brits) believe as a fact that they were the first. For the sake of this video, it was easier to go with the flow!

      I'm not discrediting the F-35, but critiquing its display profile. This is an airshow review programme, not an aircraft documentary. The F-35's demonstration was non-aerobatic and punctuated by extremely long gaps, making it among the worst choreographed and least engaging displays of the day. If I was narrating the much-improved 2019 display, which I did in S02E03, you will see it is a totally different, much more positive story.

      I assume you mean the F-35A, as the F-22 didn't fly at RIAT 2018?
      The Lightning is an excellent airshow performer and has staged some earth-shattering demonstrations this year, but in 2018 it was only operating as a Heritage Flight team, not a full demo team. Therefore, the team hadn't worked up a proper display routine that year. I believe its impromptu "solo demonstration" at RIAT was simply the three "encore" passes from the end of the Heritage Flight, repeated three times over. Nonetheless, it made for quite a mundane performance, as you said.

The F16 pilots that were ALL shot down said they never even had an indication there was an "unfriendly" in the area.

The last time the media's utter and complete cluelessness was demonstrated was them going on incessantly for YEARS on how NONE of our war hardware could do anything right, none of it worked, and was a waste of money, so we should stop building it.
      Shortly after they saw what it did in actual use (3rd world), their immediate response was, this stuff is SO GOOD, we shouldn't have to build any more. See the ACTUAL agenda, there? THANK god, people like you, and them, are not the ones calling the shots! War absolutely sucks, but when you enter one, it is imperative that you have the HW to carry it out. F22 and F35 are two pieces of that HW puzzle. Go comment on something you understand, next time.
