Those 100 people weren't given these lists. They were just asked for wars involving Britain. My guess is people immediately thought of "specific" wars involving Britain and one other party, like the 100-year-war etc. And world wars were such obvious answers that they weren't on their radar. This is only an assumption, but the same thing happened for me when I first saw the question. I thought of several wars, but not the world wars. It has actually with several questions that many people missed obvious answers. Like EU languages, where more people said French than English. Why? Because they think of other countries first when they hear 'EU' (an episode shot at a time when the UK was still part of the EU).

I highly suspect that when they do these surveys, they just ask people to list off the top of their head and don't actually show them multiple choice. The American revolutionary wars are better known in the UK as the war of American Independence but given how 41 people out of 100 did not know we were involved in WW2, I can't be sure that more people would have said we were in the involved if the question had called the war "the American War of Independence!
