Hi David from one of your online students that recently purchased your sweeping course. Just wanted to say how much I appreciate your teaching style! Your a great player and thanks so much for your humility and understanding in teaching us peeps how to improve our playing and taking it to the next level...…..Keep it up brother!
Brilliant lesson David. I absolutely love Satch and the legato licks you came up with here. I can close my eyes and picture Joe playing them live. It would be awesome if you could do more "in the style of videos" for other shredders like Vai, Zakk Wylde, Nuno, Warren DeMartini.
David, thanks a million for all that you do. I have been following your free guitar lessons from lesson 1 and I cant believe how much I have learned...it is a great set up you got going. thumbs up!
David, this is one of your better lessons! I love Satch but his licks always seemed so tough even thought a lot of those legato lines are just scale sequences. He crams a lot of notes into a beat and that's what makes them sound really cool and harder to play at the same time. Practice one string at a time with the track and it's WAY easier to get the whole thing.
First time I see one of your vids but this is great! You have this rare ability of explaining things and you nail the Satch feeling. Almost thought lick 2 was the man himself lol
I have been getting your marketing you tube videos for years but nothing has "grabbed me" - sorry for saying this! HOWEVER you finally got me with this one! Nice fluid legato, beautiful melodic playing (oh and i like the tone as well!) - i have signed up for the free classes in your guitar artistry course (which is the purpose of your videos!!) Ill work my way through this material - thank you for all the free material!
I feel like this lesson was a breakthrough for me today! Thank you so much! Im excited to work on these. I will also play the same licks but pick every note. i feel like that will double the value.
Love it as always. Have you ever done an episode with all your gear you're using? Effects, amps, processors, guitars, programs, etc. I have a few simple practice amps, a line 6 helix 150 watt combo, Harke bass combo. Several guitars and basses.
Nice lesson David. The muting section just use a thin hairband on the end of the first fret like Andy James does if you can't mute with the palm. I use the Gruv Gear string muters but I do find them too thick personally.
I could praise 99% of these videos, but save it for the ones that are applicable to what I am working on. This was helpful, thank you. I also get a lot of use out of your site, Truefire courses, V Picks and Neck Diagrams. So thanks for those as well. Time to buy another Tee I guess.
Dude, you are awesome!!! 😘 Here WE need a 200%. Because you and your content/topic is already at 100% percent each. Time for next Gen Math! Lol! Great, i Love it and it'll Help to step further ahead. Cool!
I was having the same problem. I found two ways to improve the sustain. 1) Run my amp at very high gain or 2) Use amp simulator software with a high gain amp model and noise suppression. I found that using a compressor alone with a clean amp does not provide the sustain.
No, it's not necessary. The volume/quality of your notes depends on your technique. When playing legato, there is a 'sweet spot' that exists which gives you the best sound for the least effort. Using tons of gain or compression increases the margin for error in finding that 'sweet spot'. It allows you to play legato even without using the best technique. I'd recommend taking the time to properly learn the technique so that you don't have to rely on that crutch of not being able to play legato without a compressor.
Dammit that is so similar but not EXACTLY what im looking for. I learned/pulled a weird technique from satriani that I've taken and modified it to use often. It's very close sounding but looks and is done VERY differently that the technique you show here. Its usually on ONE string for a much longer time and has ALOT of slides, like slide, hammer, pull, slide, hammer, pull, ECT. In different scale patterns up and down on ONE string. Satch does it sometimes and somehow I was able to learn it and got really absurdly fast with it but I want to expand on it but I can't find much about it online and in person lol, nobody ever knows wtf I'm even doing until I break it down so that's no help either. Its very similar to your triplets but subs in a slide for one of the notes instead of a third finger...if that helps. Lol nobody ever knows what I'm on about, I'll post a video someday
David, what kind of tone, amplifier and effects are you using so that you can just play those fast licks with your left hand? I've never noticed anyone else doing this technique of sweep picking and then not using your right hand.
Lick 2 isn't too bad if you just break it up into 6 pieces and start with the 1st string at half speed. Practice over and over, then move to the 2nd until it's just automatic. Put them together. Then use the same method for the other strings. It seriously works!!!
@@senorcitizeng484 Good idea. So simple and I didn't think of it. Thanks. I usually break a lick in half. Never occurred to me to go string by string if it's harder.

Your phrasing is absolutely splendid !
Thank you David :) (Think we have something in common)
To play along with him:
Lick 1. 120 BPM
1:22
Lick 2. 120 BPM
3:26
Lick 3. 120 BPM
6:39
Thanks David for those licks. It's exactly what I was looking for. So clean and smooth into your hands !!

I love this lesson. Thanks, David.
That new Walliman Pick animation is really cool and so was this lesson material.
Great lesson! Thank you for the great legato ideas!

Love it, excellent class Mr David, cheers from Costa Rica... Pura Vida!!!
Great ideas, well explained, and very "usable". Thank you!

your phrasing is amazing
great lesson im just getting in legato
It looks like a lot of recent viewers are asking you about your amplifiers and effects and tone as well!
Je vais essayer très doucement. Belle phrase. Merci David.

Thank you for sharing this. These licks are very good and useable. They kinda have a Randy Rhoads type of feel as well.
Absolutely great lesson! Thank you!
Nice tone
Hi David! Any chance you could put a link to axechange with the preset you use on your lessons. Loving the lessons!

Great David, How do you get your sound...AXE III?
Great lesson! However the licks are in E Dorian / D Major.
MODAL ARPEGGIOS LESSON PLEASE......AND GUITAR TRICKS WITH THEM....PLEASE
Is it necessary to have a compressor running for legato licks? I can't make the notes sustain enough to sound like you

What are your amp settings here?
David have a question how do you get that tone? If you don't mind my asking , what equipment are you using?
Dave E Lydian or A Lydian?, thanks bro🙏👍😷

David, hi! Excuse my english but what´s pedals use for his great sound? Thanks!!
Backing track’s the Royal Road Progression.
Impressive legato man... have you been working on it recently? 😄

I'm guessing he is using the fractal behind him?
can I play this if I don't own a Kiesel guitar ? In my foolishness I bought an Ibanez, J Satriani signature...
Ok,,,come play that through my rig...then I'll do lessons.
Well...poop. This ones way over my head! See ya next week Dave! LOL!
same here... don't feel bad.
You can do it!
