This is probably the most helpful video I've seen on pentatonic since I learned the positions a year ago. I honestly learned so much that I could add to my playing immediately
Some of this stuff is just barely out of my reach at the moment. I find this video very very helpful. I’m enjoying the 3 positions of minor pentatonic position as the last trick. Can’t wait to try that.
This is music ! I love such combinations ! solo variety - solo surprise !!!! Every material - chords, modes, penta's, is wonderful ! It all depends what we make of it. Thank you David.
This is one of the most clarifying videos of watched, complete 🤯 on number 5, I’ve even played around with that idea in the past but never completely understood that! Thank for the excellent content you are always putting out!
Great great video. I never learned modes but I am already doing most of that just by ear. my goal is to learn them so I can be more deliberate about it. I also love bringing in those outside notes. Subscribed.
Many moons ago, a guy told me, the notes are in the chords and the chords are in the notes. That is something I used for over 50 years of playing and it helped.
A Aeolian (minor) is actually in the same scale (same notes) as D Dorian and E Phrygian (and C Ionian, F Lydian, G Mixolydia and B Locrian). So A minor with D Dorian : you're simply playing in the same key on A and D. However, A minor with A Dorian : you are just modulating between 2 modes (that are only 1 note apart) but at some point you will want to change to a chord with different root note. David's tip 5 is something else : the 7-note scale stays the same but moving the 5-note pentatonic shape feels like the root is moving : it's moving the "root" AND the "mode" but still resulting in the same set of 7 notes : e.g. Am pentatonic (aeolian implicit) to Dm pentatonic (dorian implicit) to Em pentatonic (phrygian implicitly).
I had to learn this by accident. Wish I had seen this video a long time ago. Just as a note, you can add the "blues" note also (b5th) to create some dissidence here and there. (Key of A minor - Eb)
Nice lesson. I never really thought about combining the notes of the scale into chords while playing the scale. Cool new sounds. I kinda knew about the 5 and the 8 fret, but some of the other chords you formed were nice. I like it when I learn something new regarding the simple pentatonic. Liked and subscribed. BTW, beautiful Silver Sky you have there. I have two PRSs a Custom 24-08, and a McCarty 594 Hollow Body II. A big fan of PRS. Are you going to the PRS Experience in May at the factory?
I david i love your lessons but i do not really understand trick 5. For example why the penta starting from B should be G prhygian. The phrygian mode shuold contain a flat second and sixth if i am not wrong while that penta has a major second and sixth. Also the penta starting from E has a major third on G, how can it be G eolian? Where am i wrong!?
Cool - AND; you are always only a 1/2-step away from a "correct" sounding chord tone or a tension...so slide up or down away from dissonance into harmony.
Just as an FYI to everyone out there, all of these concepts can be done to literally any scale in any key. These techniques are not exclusive to the pentatonic scale and have been done in the Jazz idiom for a very long time. 👍😎🍺
This is all good when playing in a jam track and there isn't a key change or a substitute chord. It all changes as the journey of the chord progression dictates. Nice video.
Dude, just try raising the pitches slightly of your pentatonic scale as you play them and your solos won't sound so flat and stiff your riffs and bends will start to sing
I'm gonna keep commenting about whether or not you know who umphrey's mcgee is until you answer me or I die so.. balls in your court. Jake is the best guitar player in the world its honestly astonishing no one knows who he is

Your improvisation is simply different compared to most other guitar teachers, it sounds so fresh and interesting! 👍🏼👍🏼
9:13 ..... "Yes!" ..... David, your enthusiasm is a contagious joy to behold! Thanks for the reminders.
That last two tips are so mind-opening, and the way you put makes it so easy to understand. You're a really great player and teacher!
Man, you are trully inspiring. Thank you! Greetings from Brazil.
Excellent lesson. Thanks David.
That adds to my solo playing. Thanks David. Appreciate it so much.

That’s deep actually
Cracking vid. And great hair David - you look terrific dude.
Just bought your Pentatonics DNA course from Truefire. A great course!
Very nice and exemple expleind!😊
You are a Jedi Master teacher!
love that steely dan tone, nice lesson
What Dorian key would you play relative to A minor pentatonic scale, is it A Dorian or D Dorian, a little confused here . Same with say phrigian?
Depends on the chords, but typically A Dorian. :)

I have an off topic question. What kind of chair are you using in this video?
So good
The fusion guru.
thank you
Thank you, ... 💖💖 So helpful, Please Backing track download.
Thanks!! Link is in the video description!
@@Wallimann, Thank you very much
Fantastic tone, best I've heard from a SS, must be your fingers.

I have a love hate relationship With the minor pentatonic scale, you just made it more interesting, I'll give it a try.
Do I see it differently, Aeolian comes with minor pent box 1, Ionian with box 2 etc etc.?
I david i love your lessons but i do not really understand trick 5. For example why the penta starting from B should be G prhygian. Great concept! How about BB or Freddie King?
David, you've had a bit of a makeover! You look awesome, bro!
Thank you so much!
Yup use it
awesome content
Helpfull😃
In what key is the backing track? I am thinking C since the Am pentatonic is in C. thanks!
Never mind, Duh! It's key of G. This is Am Dorian, so the 2nd note in key of G is A and Dorian is a minor.
I think number 5 is my favorite
5:54 He just shat in your ice cream 💩🍦
Derek Trucks makes those chords in tip one a lot.

I had a holy crap moment on that last tip. Can’t wait to get off of work now!
Wallimann! Nice haircut dude, you look 15 years younger :D
No Ackowlegment of the silver sky?
I reviewed it a little while back. I live that guitar. It’s been popping in here and there on the channel. I love it!
You still have the Parkers??
Just had a "duh" moment there on tip 5... thanks!
Don't forget to start a phrase on the 'and' of 1!
Please @david I NEED THE BACKING TRACK PLEASE🙏🖤
Rofert Pomendia link in description! :)

not ready yet
Pentakill.
Can I ask what your real job is?
This is my real job. :)
@@Wallimann but you seem fairly intelligent though?
It may be nice guitar but a PRS headstock looks totally out of place on a Stat.
I'm gonna keep commenting about whether or not you know who umphrey's mcgee is until you answer me or I die so.. balls in your court. Jake is the best guitar player in the world its honestly astonishing no one knows who he is
I don't know who he is. :)
I checked and he's good! I'm not that surprised he is not known though. There are so many awesome players that are unknown.
6:04 and again....
Bollox ..
Wow 21 dislikes hahha. Snobs
Terrible guitar sound!!!
