Firewire Sunday and Haden Shapes Hypto Krypto - big board comparison

  • I got a chance to surf the Firewire Sunday 6'0 and the Haden Shapes Hypto Krypto 6'2" on the same day in relatively same conditions, some waves were better than others. I know some of you will say the Hypto should be ridden smaller, which I know, but this could also be true for the Sunday. Rather this is a comparison of the two boards in their bigger sizes.
    Aslo, this isn't a comparison of which board is better or worse since it is like comparing apples and oranges (Twin vs. Thurster). It is more a comparison of which board worked better in the condition that I surfed and the size of board that I surfed. Subtle difference but nonetheless different.
    Watch the video and let me know what you think. Which board do you think surfed better for me in these conditions.

      @@ThomyeSurfs - Mid-6 is a really nice board. Not the right tool for me, in the space I am tryin to fill in the quiver. Looks like the Mid-6 has a lot more rocker. Needs a little more juice. I'm using the Sunday for those smaller (to small to medium-sized) days when I'd rather night ride the 9'0" noserider.

    I swapped and tried a 5'6" hypto for a few waves at soft Bolsa. I'm 145 lbs, prefer higher volume, but that 5'6" felt way too boaty. The board is supposed to be short as possible it is so thick under the chest. It's not really meant to be upsized as your front foot ends up behind the sweet spot. Never surfed a Sunday but I'm assuming it has a much better balanced foam distribution that was meant to be upsized.

      I’m 140lbs and sometimes surf a 5’4 Hypto from 3-5 feet if I’m not in a shortboard mood. When it’s crowded or when waves are 8’-15’ I’ll surf a 6’ Hypto. Extra paddle power helps, but still manageable length, can still duck dive, and the pin tail gives stability. 👍

    The Sunday is based on the FireWire Creeper which was a Hypto Krypto copy. Surfing will eat itself.

      it would be interesting to compare all the sizes. Unfortunately, i could only compare the 6' Sunday to the 6'2 Hypto. I would love to be able to compare the 5'6 in both. I think that is the right size for me for performance. But I also think the Sunday in 5'6 would go good too so that would be interesting. All i know of now is in the 38L range, the Sunday. The only bad thing is the 5'6 Sunday is 31L+ while the 5'6 Hypto is like 27L.
      so tempted to try the two. but not enough funds. I just paid for a new water heater and new garage door opener. all my surf funds have been depleted. :(

    • @derekboyer1344
      @derekboyer1344 2 года назад +1

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  2 года назад +1

      @@derekboyer1344 I'm really contemplating pulling the trigger on a 5'6 actually. 28L. that would put it at the same liters as my El Tomo, NB3, Modern2, Seaside, GoFish, Glazer, and Fishbeard. at least it would make for a fair comparison. People tend to want to right size a board, but that is so hard to do. a 5'6 might be better one day, a 5'8 on another. So, for me, since my intent these day is to review boards, I almost feel like I have to stop searching for my size rather, surf boards at a similar volume for review and comparison.
      Besides, anyone who watches my videos and humors my opinion, is likely a different surfer, surfing different waves, of different skill level.

      Definitely tough. It's funny, there are days I get tons of waves with 50 people out and other times, get so little when there are only 5 people out. I guess it all depends on their etiquette. People that don't take turns are rough to surf by. They catch one and then paddle to your inside. :(

    which twin fins were you using in the Sunday? Just ordered a 6'0, can't wait to try it out. Thanks

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  Год назад

      I typically ride it with the Machado Keels. It makes the board a tad tight but super drivey. I would say another really good option is any neutral twin like the MR with a stabilizer. The stabilizer you need is this one to use in the US box.
      www.surfnvs.com/collections/apex-twins/products/stabilizer-apex-1
      Now if you just bought the newest version of the Sunday, they won't have the center US box so you can only ride it as a twin. In which case, I would suggest a keel but if you aren't a fan of those, they have semi keels or modern keels that work great. Like these:
      www.surfnvs.com/collections/apex-twins/products/apex-series-ono-twin
      www.surfnvs.com/collections/apex-twins/products/tallboy-twin-apex
      In all honesty though, I have limited experience with all the various fins. There are too many for me to test since it would be out of pocket for me. But from the ones I do have, I can speak in general terms. Also, I can only tell differences in big differences like Neutral vs Keel, rake vs pivot, etc. Once i start looking at small differences like comparing one raked vs another raked, I can't tell. Size of fins seems to matter. One funny thing I discovered was that I like a large keel in my 5'6 Sunday, but prefer a small keel on my 6'8 Sunday. I think because there is so much rail in the water and you can only turn it on the tail, it's better to have a smaller fin.
      Sorry for the long response.

      In some ways yes but lately, I have been surfing my El Tomo Fish and for some odd reason, that board goes really well backhand for me. Counter intuitive if you think about it. The M2 feels better forehand under certain conditions but the El Tomo Fish is super consistent and predictable.
      It's almost like the M2 relies on my skills with very loose boundaries. so much more room for error. The ETF has tight boundaries and sometimes reigns in my mistakes and corrects for me. Like the board does more of the work. Really hard to explain.
      At the moment, if I had to choose, I think ETF. but M2 is a close second. Although having said that, I am still trying to assess and get my SciFi2 out on different conditions.

That board felt really off to me but my buddy who let me rid it had it set up as a 2 +1 but the front fins were not as big as I would have liked. I might consider revisiting that board. The shape and outline looks amazing. But one thing for sure about his MISC was that it was super soft. There were massive pressures on the deck, even where the hands go.

It is fast becoming my favorite and about to knock the Modern2 off its pedestal.
      Question to you? what boards from other shapers do you think is comparable to the Mashup?
      BTW, both Spitfire and Mashup are wide point back but the Mashup moved it a tad forward. not much but enough to ride the board shorter. I rode the spitfire in a 5'8. 5'6 felt wrong for me. I think the 5'6 or a 5'5 Mashup would have been good.

      @ThomyeSurfs  2 года назад

      I know it's too big, but so is the Sunday. I would likely ride both in 5'6" if I were to target my ideal volume but I wanted to do a comparison of two oversized boards, both at 38L. Intermediate surfers usually ride bigger boards anyways so this is a good look at a comparison for them. On top of that, they are apples and oranges in my opinion.
      If I were to compare the 5'6" boards, not sure which would be more fun or go better. I have surfed the 5'6 Hypto before and it went well. But I also remember it was a tad narrow on the tail and it was harder to surf in softer smaller conditions. Anyways, if I ever get an opportunity to compare the smaller versions, I will definitely do it. But if I were to predict based on my experience just knowing boards and having surfed so many kinds, I think the 5'6" Hypto would go better in punchier faster waves and the 5'6" Sunday would be better on softer waves. It would still go good in punchier but get out performed by the Hypto.
      Fingers crossed that someday i will get the chance.
