  • So in order to hold a carving blank at a reasonable angle you need some way to secure it. Hence the carving holder build. It's cheap, easy, simple and slightly botched - typical SW fare! Featuring such luminaries as plywood, pine and hickory... Enjoy

Nice build, I've also struggled to secure my carvings (I always decide I want to remove more from the inside of bowls after I've carved the outside into impossible to clamp shapes) so I'll definitely make one of these!
Clamping a sheet of scrap plywood underneath before drilling would've reduced all that tearout, but like you said, it's not fine furinture so it's fit for purpose.
Re being too light, could you add a plywood sheet under the base and then place some heavy weights onto it to stop it moving.
I'm enjoying your video style, nice easy pace and you don't get stressed if things don't go as well as you'd hoped, which is a great approach! 🙂
And hooray, your workshop is almost as messy as mine! (I'm deluding myself, mine is an absolute pit!)

Those bloody carpenters pencils, not sharpening themselves. Oooo those lap joints look very nice. Your stand has an almost writing bureau feeling about it, fancy pants

I am new to carving and I am in the throes of working out how I want to work be it sitting or standing. Sitting seems pleasant but appears to have definite drawbacks or at least differences in terms of carving ergonomics. I see top carvers sitting and standing which seems to point to personal preference on top of efficiency. Jury Is Out for me right now.

    Good Idea!
    Btw:
For me it would be better without music.

Great ideas and excellent work; but please don’t spend so much time showing me how you cut boards, drill holes, spread glue and drive screws. I can already do all that. I want to see what you built and how it functions. What cool features does it have?
