    Without a clear cut resolution for how Disney's sequel trilogy was going to flow and conclude, JJ Abrams and Rian Johnson seemed to play tug-of-war with certain characters and plot lines.
    In this video I demonstrate a few examples of this back and forth, such as Hux's character and Kylo Ren's mask, with a comedic spin. (I also tease Luke Skywalker, JJ style, but decided that needs to be its own video)

      The truth is neither Rian or JJ made made a positive contribution to the franchise. The Force Awakens was just a rehash of a New Hope and The Last Jedi paid little respect to characters that had been developed outside of the movies in mediums that fans loved (even if they aren't considered canon by Disney).

    I've recently done a reversal on my original thought that Rian Johnson ruined star wars. JJ had already ruined it. But Rian still has a big part to play. And nothing shows this more than the lineage of Rey. Do i like the idea Rian pushed that she was a nobody? Yeah, i do. But it defied my expectations. And ive heard anlot of people argue that the fans expected too much, that we created something out of nothing, that we ruined it for ourselves because we werent happy with our fan fiction. But the speculation leading up ro Last Jedi was not creates by ourselves. JJ had clearly set up a tease. Her talent with the force must have come from somewhere. The fact Luke's lightsaber was drawn specifically to her as if she has a tie to Luke. Han basically just gives her a job with him after meeting her for 5 seconds as if he knew who she was. Kylo instantly took an interest in her as if he knew who she was. There was a lot of questions which suggested she could have been a Skywalker, a Solo, heck, i even remember theorising at one point she would be a Palpatine. But the set up was in olay when Rian took the reigns. And then he give ZERO payoff. And set up without pay off leaves a bad taste. It leaves the viewer questioning the film. Why get my hopes up, why dangle questions you wont answer, ahould i expect more questions to go un answered. Personally, i wosh the route they would have gone down was that she was a student of Luke's when she was very young. Young enough to forget. But also it would have given her that tie to Luke. It would have meant Kylo had met her before albeit as a child, as they were both students. Hand and Leia would have recognized her and Han eould have given her that job to keep her close so when they found Luke, he could continue to train her. It even explains why she was so strong in the force. She forgot her training but it came back to her like muscle memory. But best of all, she didnt have to be the daughter of anyone famous. But Rian didnt write that. He just cast the build up to one side and went, yeah, people will forget about all that won't they. I dont know of its proof hes a bad writer or proof he hated JJs ideas and wanted to undo them. But whilst I do now believe JJ set Rian up to fail, I also believe Rian was doomed to fail anyway because he failed to make a sequel to Force Awakens and just made his own story, his way, without any care for what came before it

      To be fair George Lucas already shat in his own nest with the prequel trilogy, those movies are only remembered more fondly now because the sequel trilogy was even worse in hindsight. But yes, Jar Jar Abrams totally ruined Star Wars, Johnson just heaped on a quicker demise.

    To be honest it's not Rians fault in my eyes, JJ has stated that he doesn't do endings and also you can see from his films that he's a bit of a copy and paste director. TFA is basically a rehash of a new hope and then left Luke on an island and said that's that.. Rian took up the mantle and did the only thing that you could do with Luke but atleast made the film more unique and didn't copy previous films, there are some nostalgic moments but I can honestly say that it's not a like for like of empire strikes back. Yes Rian made a few goofy cringe choices but for me it is the only good sequel film. Plus it was a strong film for Poe especially.
    Rise was just a film that was scared of the fans and trying to do the safest option possible. Bringing back the mask, turning Rey into a relative of Palpatine... Bringing back Palpatine.. Force healing... Finn saying Rey all the time and does not explain his force sensitivity.. Knights of Ren being nothing... Also I hate how the Rise poster shows Rey and Kylo dueling with his mask on fighting on some sort of cliff edge and it's not even in the film.... To be honest there should have been a plan from the start and in my opinion JJ messed it up. Adam Driver was the only good thing about Rise for me his acting was super.

    I actually think if rian had been given the trilogy from the start it would have been so much better. he's an artist's artist who commits to his vision instead of cringing away from the heckling of dumb nerds on the internet. TLJ was the only movie from the sequel trilogy with something to say other than here's nostalgia give me money. people think of his perspective as more cynical what with so much slaughtering of false idols, as seen with iconography like the mask among other things but really the nostalgia bait cowardice is the truly cynical approach to making art and moving away from that was a step towards something greater. Something which didn't just spread the material of the originals thin by rehashing, but tried to develop and be in conversation with the other movies that came before it. If you pay attention to it as a response to the themes and ideas of the prequels, originals, and TFA as a whole sequence you may come to view it and rian johnson more charitably. TFA didn't actually engage with the material it was drawing from beyond pointlessly retreading its ground and didn't attempt to expand upon the themes, ideas or anything like that. Idol worship. We didn't need episode IV 2.0, we needed episode VII. However, since JJ made a comatose clone, to actually say anything of value the false idols propped up in TFA needed to be old yellered and born anew from the ashes. if rian had been given the trilogy from the start he would have been able to start off on a much better foot and not had to pry any semblance of good art out of JJ's grotesque creation. I still hope they let him make another trilogy at some point like they had rumored in the past, though I know that's an unpopular opinion. I also think if he'd directed IX it would've left me with something other than a void of corporate induced hopelessness in my heart as I left the theater. Even if you thought it was a bad movie and bad sequel to star wars and all that, it would have been more interesting at least instead of the boring and unimaginative kind of bad that makes you want to commit suicune

      I genuinely enjoy some of the other original projects he’s created. My original intent was to show how the lack of planning a switching back and forth of characters and plot points was so harmful for the films. So I do agree that having one director, or having the two directors on the same page from the start would’ve at the very least made a more cohesive story. JJ definitely is not faultless, I was actually trying to show how he puts a lot of the blame on lack of planning and not being involved in the middle trilogy instead of taking any responsibility. After reading some of the comments and watching through the video again I can see how people think it was just bashing Rian instead of the full point I wanted to make, which I can improve on in the future. While I did not personally enjoy the sequel trilogy all that much, I definitely do not put all the blame on Rian.

    • @Hykje
      @Hykje Год назад +7

      Rian's disregard for the fact he was doing a middle film in a trilogy is more of a symptom of the overall problem that Disney and Lucasfilm went into the project more interested to please the wrong people on the internet than actually telling a story.

      @@EBCX It's mainly because JJ near enough copies and re-modernises a New Hope that's all. It's a fun film I agree but it is only because it has worked before. It's also lazy and to me not very exciting. I was Hyped after watching it for the first time.. but I then understood why, because I had seen it before and then that dulled the enjoyment because I realised not much was new. I think it should have been something new and not A New Hope 2.0. Anyway.. I'm not saying this against you enjoying TFA. It's great that you do 😊 I wish I had that enjoyment for it too.

    Honestly who cares? I think its funny to see two people with totally different viewpoints, one using nostalgia as a crutch and the other being totally original, being hired by the same studio to make a trilogy to a decade spanning franchise and not giving a shit what happens because they know it'll make money regardless. And they were right. So Disney still won.
