One of the greatest and most beloved London orchestras of the late 1920s through the 1940s was without doubt (Bert) Ambrose's band whose 78rpms are still found in great quantity in Belgium today . Born in the east of London in 1896, Ambrose started his career in the USA before returning to London in 1922 when he was asked to play at the Embassy Club... His band soon became known for its elegant sound and superb arrangements. Vocalists with the band included Sam Browne, Kitty Carlisle, Evelyn Dall and most famously Vera Lynn.... He played not only at the Embassy Club but also at the May Fair Hotel (and seemed to alternate between these two venues) and recorded many sides for Brunswick, HMV and Decca... He retired from performing in 1940 but continued to make recordings.... Later on he decided to perform again but he suffered considerably from the demise of the big band era. He died in 1971.

I feel sure Sid Phillips arranged this, as he did so many times for Ambrose in the late 1930s.This is prewar British jazz at its best.

Composed and arranged by Bert Barnes, who was the band's pianist at this time. The arrangement was published, complete with that wonderful piano solo.

Ms. Bacon, I believe Billy Amstell was a saxist. Max was simply great. Every title I've heard including him I've liked. As a former bandleader myself, I think if I were active then, I would have given my right arm to hire him. His comic vocals ( not often heard) were funny as well. The name of the pianist escapes me for the moment.

    Très rapide!
Ca fait un peu penser au "Temps Modernes" de Chaplin, la musique va bien avec les images.
    Merci!

Ambrose was born 11 (not 15) Sept 1896 in Warsaw (not London). All sources have the date and place wrong. New, primary source, information has come to light. Check the text to my Ambrose video at Adoree + I'm Riding to Glory ~ Ambrose & his Mayfair Orchestra (1928)

Who is playing piano on this, is it Billy Amstel? I am very keen to get recordings of Ambrose's band, esp. with Max Bacon playing a drum solo. My name will tell you why.
    Josephine Bacon
