dude.. its probably my biggest pet peave about VH.. mikey never got the recognition he deserved.. from the band and the fans... bassists always fall outside the lime light... but mikey is beyond fucking KEY to the VH sound..

Whatever Sammy and Mike have done to keep their voices should be required for any rock singer!
It might be as simple as quitting cigarettes.
Then again it took me less than a minute to think of a few non-smokers who have lost their vocal range. Vocal coaches also seem to make a world of difference. It's not like aging singers are really doing something stupid, it's just if they were self-taught, they may have worked out their own techniques that were never optimal, but worked well enough for them while they were young... Then as one ages the vocal folds are less forgiving, so even the greats can benefit from a coach. I suspect these guys as well as Roger Daltrey have coaches, or at least employ a regimen based on solid medical info, whether from a doctor or personal research.
Of course this is just my theories, but to really know the facts we'd have to ask Sammy himself lol. Until than we can just take our observations to work it out. I'd feel fortunate at the end of my 30s to sing as well as Sammy in his early 70s 😎

I have a lot of admiration for Sammy Hagar, a guy who (according to interviews he has given) grew up dirt poor, and worked his heart out to get to where he is. And the thing that blows me away is his insanely positive attitude toward everything. If you see his show on axs tv, he is so positive and genuinely happy. Good for you, Mr. Hagar. You are a great artist. Stay safe and healthy!
He and John Mellencamp are polar opposites in attitude. John has always had this dark brooding side he can't seem to escape from.

RIP Eddie. This was always my favorite VH song. It came out when I was learning the world wasn't they way it should be. The video blew my mind as an early teen, and your performance here, along with your commentary about it's relevancy today shows me that this song is true art. He will be missed. I am glad the legacy will outlast us all.

Van Halen has been a part of my life since 1978. I love the Dave era, but my prime teenage years came during the first two Sammy era records. I love it all, but the Sam years were my favorite. I used to play this song before my exams in college.

I was both a Van Halen fan AND a Sammy Hagar fan (my two favorite albums are Standing Hampton and Three Lock Box) so when I heard the Red Rocker was slated to take Roth's place, I new the bar had been set much, much higher on the music. I saw the Sam & Dave tour. Sammy smoked Roth, hands down.
