Lore bit of Trazyn: He is the pokemon-collector of the 42nd millenium. He has titans, planets, people, specimen of extinct species, specific MOMENTS entrapped and/or stored in his library of unlimited possibilities. It is said that only the Imperial storages under the Emperor's golden throne can even rival the majesty, horror and glory this being has collected. Also he is a fucking meme, which means he is loved and adored by both fans and Belisarius Cawl. If someone could get in without Trazyn noticing them, they would have possible access to galaxy-ending gear and technology, which Trazyn only has because they are trophies for him.

Mirage mirror in the grave gives Trazyn a very nice way to protect itself by turning into a land or something else to dodge removal.

lol you can also include a card like blade of the oni, or leech gauntlet to give it 'Reconfigure' to protect it from creature removal.
@@chaosnight2006 The issue is I don't think you can deconfigure a reconfigured creature so he's stuck like this until the creature hits the yard
Can’t forget thousand year elixir needs to be added to the list. If played gives some haste effect if not played but destroyed it gives the untap target creature effect

which you can combo as well with Imotekh, the Stormlord to get the benefit of infinite necron tokens as well

ironic since Trazyn is banned from Imotekh's worlds because he (Trazyn) tried to steal his (Imotekh) staff.
Remember that almost *every creature* in the Necron precon is an Artifact Creature. And the deck is focused on sending cards to the graveyard and back again.
That's a lot of abilities
This card is insane, buuuut for flavor reasons I'd rather have an ability that involves stealing other players things. His whole thing is that he goes around taking whatever he finds interesting and throwing it into his gallery, which includes other peoples and their stuff lol.
Finally! FINALLY! A real, honest to god, use for One with Nothing!
A little Rough today its "Tray" - " son" closure to Raison.
He does have an impressive amount of stuff in his vaults including but not limited to many copies of Balanced Magic Expansions, the warhammer and all of the life paid to cast channel fireball.
In the 40K audiobooks it’s “trah-zinn” or “trazeen” for the more Egyptian sounding voices.
Pronunciation seems to vary between games and other stuff

Did you guys forget about Biotransference? The new Enchantment. You can go infinite in so many more ways than simply with artifacts. You can make stuff into artifacts in your graveyard and pop off in whatever way you want (restrictid to black and colorless of course).
"Creatures you control are artifacts in addition to their other types. The same is true for creature spells you control and creature cards you own that aren’t on the battlefield."
Last part is the important one.
I was looking through comments to see if anyone else was gonna mention that idk why he didnt
i'm under the suspicion that the intention of the video is to highlight cards available to add to the precon, vs highlighting cards that are already in it. (particularly cards good to add to the precon with this being the commander, obviously)
One With Nothing would also be good with this deck, putting your entire hand into your graveyard would add a handful of abilities to Trazyn in one move
Good thinking finally some more use for that card.

The funny thing is that if you squint a bit, Triskelion kind of looks like a Necron Triarch Stalker.
This is CEDH good and has turn 1 wins but time will tell if consistent wins can be had within 3 turns. It looks like it could.
It’ll probably be one of the decks that has potential to hang at some cedh pods, but he has too many weak spots. Free and cheap counter magic will hit his tutors to prevent them from hitting play/grave. Cast him too early and he’ll probably be removed while your tutor is on the stack. Grave hate can hose his strategy as well as anything that hates artifact activated abilities due to him also having the unfortunate drawback of being an artifact creature himself.
He’s a necrotic ooze in the command zone, sure. But a worse version of it because of his personal weak spots.
In cedh though, anything is possible considering a chain veil teferi won some larger edh event fairly recently.
If you seek to beat the crap out of your opponent instead, you can also use Crashing Drawbridge to gives Haste to your board. Pretty fun.
I am not a fan of infinite combos but if I saw a deck with infinite infinite combos that would be dope!!🧙♂️🔮🤙
They put several good combos into the deck he comes with.

This can also be done with necrotic ooze + sidisi, undead vizier, but that takes 11 mana and is 2 spells instead of 1

Unless he gets the same generous ruling that necrotic ooze got (see the 1/1/2011 ruling on the Gatherer entry) Trazyn is not "Walking Ballista", and so you cannot remove +1+1 counters from him with that effect, and cards in your graveyard cannot have counters. Same goes for devourer+triskelion, the 1 cost ability for staff of domination. I'm pretty sure Golem Artisan (or Lightning Greaves if you have it on field already), Palladium Myr + Pili-Pala for infinite mana, then retrofitter foundry for infinite thopters (which you then give haste with the golem) works without this errata/ruling. Also, don't forget about Morality Shift to effectively dump your whole deck into the graveyard.
Edit: 201.5b is the blanket ruling that allows the reference for the abilities so we're all good. Thanks @Zwolfe123
It's already in the rules that anytime a card references itself by name it means "this card" . So walking really says "Remove a +1/+1 counter from "this card": It deals 1 damage to any target. So mitch is correct about how this works.
Those rulings are just to make it simpler for people to understand without referencing rule numbers.
@@LightBulbPlayz Ah, ok I've found the blanket ruling, it's a lot easier with this being the case. I just know that if I bring Trazy out at my table and I declare I'm using ballista's ability I'll have to show my receipts. 201.5b for anyone finding this.
Is it part of the rules that Trazyn treats [CARDNAME] as his own? I know it's an FAQ for Necrotic Ooze but I haven't a clue if that's actually part of the comprehensive rules that all cards with this effect treat these effects like that.
Edit: It is part of the rules. "201.5b If an ability of an object refers to that object by name, and an object with a different name gains that ability, each instance of the first name in the gained ability that refers to the first object by name should be treated as the second name."

I feel like he’s one of those Tergrid type cards. Looks great from a distance, but at the table nobody in the pod will let you have any fun.

If Trazyn takes LED mana ability, wouldn't he just sacrifice himself along with discarding your hand for 3 mana?
LED can enable an easy one turn win with a lucky hand. Somebody else suggested One with nothing for the deck. That’s what LED does beside the 3 mana for casting your commander. It’s busted in this deck

"Equip" is an activated ability, so he gains the "Equip" ability of all equipment in your graveyard. But he can't use them because he doesn't have the equipment subtype. However, you could first turn him into a vehicle with Swift Reconfiguration, and then turn him into an Equipment with Bludgeon Brawl. Then if Lightning Greaves is in your graveyard, Trazyn would have "Equip 0."
Admittedly, this is completely useless... but it's funny.

I have a question regarding the ballista: as it specifies that you put/remove counters from balista, does that still work? The commander doesn't copy the name. (I come from Yu-Gi-Oh where names matter :D )

Exactly! All of these amazing combos being mentioned all over YT and Reddit and not many people seem to be pointing out his unfortunate *Artifact creature* typing that makes him a lot worse than necrotic ooze. Still love him though and I’ll likely upgrade my precon to do degenerate things, but probably keep mine on the more casual level to still play with a lot of my playgroups.
Staff of Dom, LED, and Retrofitter don't work. They specifically name the card they affect

Anytime a card says its own name it just means "this physical card". If you get the ability on another card the ability uses the new card's name. Look up the old Jace/ Nicole Bolas planweswalker combos for how stuff like that works.

It does. The name refers to the permanent activating the ability.
Short answer is his name replaces all instances of the original card name. A slightly longer explanation is that all abilities that refer to a card activating itself can be read as "pay x: untap the permanent with this ability", or whatever the activation is

Anytime a card refers to itself using its own name, that just means "this physical card". Clone copies that keep their own name (Sakashima) get the ability saying the new card name. I assume Trazyn works similarly, but I'm not 100% on it. Sorry if this was too wordy.

The effect is to untap staff of dom, not untap this card so wouldn’t the commander not be able to untap itself since its not the staff of dom... his effect is gain artifact effects not names so if the effect is to untap a name wouldnt it not work for himself?

Ehh, You lose to Bajuka Bog and he costs 6 mana. But to be fair your only going to cast him on the tur you win. but as a counter point to my counter point, costing 6 means you probably can't recast him that same turn if he gets spot removed.

Yep and if you use a card like sol ring/pallidium myr + pila pala you make infinite mana with taps and untaps but opponents can't interact because they're both mana abilities :D

Rules lawyers please help me out. I hope that this commander can use the untap abilities of staff of domination and retrofitter foundry. Since those activated abilities mention those cards by name as opposed to saying “untap this artifact,“ does that still allow Trazyn to untap himself when those cards are in the graveyard?

Honestly I don't think Trazyn is very good. It's not due to a lack of power level, but it's the Narset thing. Everyone sits down at the table, looks at your commander and silently agrees to never let you do anything with it. At least Narset has hexproof built in.

I don't think staff of domination works with trazyn. The way i understand it, when the staff is in the graveyard then trazyn would gain the ability to untap staff of domination rather than the ability to untap itself. Same for the retrofitter foundry.

$900 for the 42 suggested cards. I would not call that a budget deck.

Do you think the Staff of Domination untap would work? Because it says "Untap Staff of Dom" instead of Untap this card, so if the Commander had that text, it would just Untap a card named Staff of Dom. Just wondering.
I was thinking the exact same thing. If I remember correctly there are some cards where the card name in the rules text can be replaced with "this card". Most, if not all of those cards however, have had newer versions printed with the correct rule text. Unlike Staff of Domination.
EDIT: Funnily enough, Bastalt Monolith's OLD rule text does not mention "Basalt Monolith" in it's untap ability's rule text. It just says "pay {0} to untap". So the old rule text of Basalt Monolith would allow Trazyn to untap itself, but the new rule text of Basalt Monolith would not, if we read the rule text word for word that is. So, I'm guessing there are still cases where the card's name in the rule text is meant to be seen as "this card".

The short version is yes. Any card that refrences itself as part of it's own effect basically just means "the card this ability is on".

I think you forgot that it doesn't gain the artifacts names so the abilities that state the name don't work.

How does it work with equip cards ???
Buried Alive might go up in price just bc this commander bc if this guy has Haste,you can just cast the spell and win w eg the first combo. O.o
It’ll increase for a while, but I expect most people that are overhype for this amazing guy won’t keep the deck together once they see how easily it is shut down or casual pods don’t play against it.
Needing haste is yet another downside. All of the “1 or 2” card combos always fail to mention that it’s really a 2-3 since you need your commander on the battlefield already and adding a haste enabler just increases that count even further.
Theory crafting is one of my favorite aspects of this game and I absolutely love this guy & faction, but I just feel like he’s another card that’s getting too much hype that won’t see much cedh play once people see him shut down so easily at the table.
I told a friend that’s going to try him in cedh that he still needs necrotic ooze in the deck to dodge a lot of the hate that shuts his commander down.
