Kyle: The bible isn't a monster manual!
Me: You're right. It's a monster manual with a long list of ancient names that I can use for NPCs.
Hahaha
Lol, a campain coming from the Genesis to Apocalypse using the bible as guide line XDDDDDD
@@anq4274 yooooo
@@anq4274 hmm I wonder who they would play as
Perhaps nephilim or their direct children? That way they have an excuse to be immortal and be adventurers(nephilim with giant great beings, giant could be metaphorical as in giant minds or giant might which works well for adventurers)
Or an angel/demon though at that point just play In Nomine. Maybe a fae, said by the church to be those angels who were neutral during the war
Nothing is likely to make me less calm or more afraid than a Kaiju-sized whirling dervish of wings and eyeballs looking directly at me and saying "Chill bro.."
Yeah like, has that ever worked out for the angels?? Haha!!
As a preacher I can attest to the fact that the Biblical description of angels is much more monsterous than what people think. There is a reason they said "fear not" or "be not afraid". ;)
~ Adam
Yeah, it's pretty intense sometimes!! Sometimes it's a dude with a swords, and other times, it's wheels and eyeballs!!
I thought that the thrones and seraphim didn't really speak to people, and it was the lower angels who said "be not afraid"?
@@nelly5954
The divisions of spiritual beings is not specifically defined in scripture. The Catholic Church did most of the assigning of ranks and such since the Bible isn't focused on providing information on man's relationship to Angel's, but man's relationship to God.
The Catholic Cataclysm, Canon, and its classifications of angels, devils, demons, and such is useful for lining out our games, but not really for building biblically backed understandings of things.
~ Adam
Huh, small world. I see you posting in the Open Legend discord all the time.
@@keifernilsson8326
Yup. That is me. 😁👍
~ Adam
Dude I'm forever impressed by how you draw, how did a bunch of watercolor spots turned into THIS?! It's incredible and ominous I love it and im afraid of it
Wow, thank you! Yeah, I actually almost gave up on this piece! I was looking at all the paint and thought, "There is no way I can fix this mess!!" But that moment happens almost every time I make something, so I'm getting better at working through that anxiety and having confidence that I can make a nice thing from a mess! Haha
@@mapcrow do not be afraid for I give you good news about your painting!
I think of the Modrons as stripped down, cartoony angels from the Bible. This video is building a better modron by taking them out of the monster manual and into the plot device realm.
@@timblighton6216 - I like this idea, perhaps more than I should.
If you haven’t already added them, it would be cool to see your takes on fey creatures like kelpies and such. Scary fairies, if you will
Oooo! Yeah!! Scary fairies is a great idea! Thanks!!
Ya know thinking about it, the Bible gives a very good method for DMing. If DND gods acted more like Big G things would be easier to explain.
Why are the PC's all meeting in a tavern, because they all had dreams before hand telling them to go to this place.
Why does this random NPC suddenly know so much plot relevant stuff for the PCs to learn? They're actually an angel guiding them.
PCs going off the tracks? Put a sleeping Gold dragon, or an angel with a flaming sword, at the end of the road only the PCs can see.
Why do they have to be the ones to stop the evil plot? Well the heavens don't like to directly interfere, but if the party fails, they will interfere and the party and the world will get a demonstration of the word 'biblical's other meaning...
"Calamity". . . seems timely. This is outstanding, both in inspiration and as an art walkthrough (love the limited color palette!). Thank you for your great work!
Let's hope not TOO timely. Cheers!!
Gorgeous. The landscape below really sets it apart from other depictions I've seen. I love the idea of the PCs choosing an NPC each to save in a city. I can only imagine the hand-wringing if this happened in the third or fourth campaign in the same world, with a full stable of well-established beloved NPCs. Oof.
Absolutely loved the cosmic horror angle of an angel encounter. Really want to see you build a better lycanthrope. Obviously a werewolf would be the first choice cus duh werewolves, but aside from trying to reinvent the wheel and coming up with an original design that really makes it stand out, what about a twisted werejaguar or a werewolverine. Something savage and mean and absolutely ready to shred everything in it's path.
I’ll have to think about that!! I wonder how far you can go with the lycanthropy before it’s something entirely different?? Thanks!!
I just made a revenant werewolf for my homebrew game cant wait to unleash it on my players.
@@jessemacaspac443 Heck yeah! If I would make the video today, it would be that hands would turn into wolf heads, and extra wolf heads would slowly grow from the victim's back and shoulders. Body Horror is always my go-to for monsters. Haha
I love this series so much. I used your idea for better Owlbears to create a half decent one shot for a 1 on 1 session with my girlfriend, and it really got her hooked on DnD, thank you so much!
Thank you so much!! This is actually the best thing I’ve ever heard!! Wow!! I’m so glad y’all had a good time!!
Omg it’s 2am and I just woke up from a nightmare this is perfect to comfort me and calm me down, ty for having such a great channel
I love biblical angels, my real name is derived from one
Oh! Well I’m happy to be there for you tonight! Hope you can get back to sleep!!
Your designs and textures are amazing
Thank you!! I really enjoy what prismacolor pencils do on bristol board!!
I like how the advice mapcrow gives in this video can be applied to more than just angles. Imagine if a player picked up a magic ring they found in an ally and suddenly there was a deathly lich hovering over them. The player is the only one who can see the lich and they are immune to its powers, but the lich goes on to subtly destroy the city and its up to the player to try and convince everyone of the danger of this invisible threat.
Yeah, I'm asking for a building better liches video.
Now what can I say except thank you, the eldritch angels are one of my favorite tropes, I already implemented some of them in my games, but I was lacking something to give them a different plot relation, and just as I need, you come and give it to me.
Heck yeah!! Similar to Cthulhu, judgement day can only be delayed!!
Thanks for bringing this back. It's always so creative. It'd be really cool if you could do one on gnolls (I think I've mentioned this before). They've really been done dirty by recent editions, despite there being a bunch of really cool things that could be done with them.
Yeah! I like the Dunsany knolls, where they seem to have come from!! Thanks for the comment!!
Visual art in action. Awesome.
Thank you so much for the kind words!!
Angels answer to the god of light in my world, which is very tied to the visual. I think we would see my old prophet somehow go blind as they pass their unbearable burden onto a new seer - meaning that if the PC shuns the responsibility, they would go blind real quick too. But also I think I'd improve their/grant them darkvision permanently. Thanks for these videos, Kyle! They always give me a great jumping off point.
was just watching another of ur videos and this one poped up! love all your work and thanks for all how much you inspire me to continue to study art and illustration
I'm so glad! Yeah, studying is what keeps me illustrating! I love finding out new stuff and giving it a try!! Thanks for the kind words!!
Al Gore Rhythm
But seriously, really got some great inspiration from this, and it's a pleasure to watch you make art.
It took me FAR too long to figure out what Al Gore Rhythm meant! Haha!! Thank you!!
Biblically accurate angels are such a commonly mentioned topic and yet you managed to bring some really fresh and cool ideas into it.
Also that piece is soo stunning.
I'm really enjoying this series, so many good ideas! I've taken a little inspiration from your work and am going to have a go at designing my own Otyugh, trying to create something in the same silhouette but is perhaps more familiar and grounded than some tentacle monster.
I was JUST rewatching the previous videos in this series. Really happy to see more of it! :D
Ha! Right on!! I like to bounce around with topics to keep things fresh and interesting for me!! Thanks for watching!!
The second I saw this video I totally flipped out!! I want to use this style of celestial to, I'm so glad your doing a video on this subject!
I'm so glad! I hope it's helpful!!
These videos are so awesome 😍 I'm literally in awe
This video is killer, one of your best so far! The art and the ideas are super cool.
Such an amazing image - I am captivated by your drawing process, and your advice is so helpful!
Yeah! I love this series! I'd love to see what is on that list of possible monsters you might reinterpret next
Very fun episode. I love the take where being "anointed" allows you to see them.
Always an amazing quality video mate!
Thank you so much!!
Bayonetta, I think, has really nailed a good balance between the idea of the beautiful and the horrifying angels, in that they come armored in these magnificent shells, which crack or shift or break as combat continues and reveal what are basically lovecraftian horrors underneath (which, on point).
I agree! Bayonetta is a gorgeous game!!
wow watching this go from watercolor blobs to the finished piece is incredible. Great work as always!!!
This is one of my favorite pieces I’ve seen you make! May the algorithm be ever in your favor
Great piece and thank you for expanding on how to use Biblically accurate angels in a game.
I've asked more deities videos (because the concepts drawed by you was wonderful), but angels was pretty awesome - specially depicting the biblical acurrate ones - now I'm thinking about the whole characters in that kind of lore, like saints or divine relics, and the aplications on some RPG sessions.
Great job, keep coming, your content is fabulous (for me, the tabletop ones are my favorites).
Oh my god. I just looked at your world and dungeon maps videos. Just began to bingewatch BBM, I'm hooked ! Your illustrations are great, just like your ideas. I love how you take inspiration from folklore to make monsters interesting again.
Don’t forget to tell them not to look upon its destruction or be a cursed. No instant Petrification (being turned to salt) but some fun things could happen.
Heck yeah!! Lots of cool stuff to play with!!
That adventure is awesome! Great way to draw inspiration from the Bible.
I always get super pumped when I see another one of your videos pop up in my feed! It's so cool to see the process of turning the big blocks of watercolor into an awe-inducing cataclysmic tableau. Thank you for another inspiring video. :)
Heck yeah!! Thanks for the kind words!! I think I learned from James Gurney to start with the biggest brush you can get away with!
Love your videos, and really dig the piece as well.
The art on this one is astonishing mate. I'd have that on a t-shirt
Almost as cool as your magic item using lich piece. The wings and silhouettes of burning buildings in particular are awesome!
I want to thank you for making such amazing videos and artwork before I make any suggestions. I've recently been experiencing severe art block, but your videos have really encouraged me to start creating again, and I'm truly loving it. My suggestion is that there could be some horror sealife, such as sea hags or sea nymphs. :-))
Not only a great creature design, but an absolutely fantastic setting!
Your illustration is amazing ! And you're amazing too Kyle ! I rubbed my hands with appetite when I saw the thumbnail of the video hehe ! Angels are such cool monsters; that relentless, unapproachable, infinitely superior vibe i love that ! And that idea of the character changed forever by a brief interaction i love that too !
Wow, thank you! I have the same reaction when I see you posting new art too!! Cheers, my friend!!
I'm so glad this series is back! You should look up the Angels from the book Pact by Wildbow, he does some interesting stuff with them too!
I love your work, keep it up!
Thank you!!
Love this series
Thank you!! It's real fun!!
wow. nice art. I love the mixed media of water color and pencil
Thank you!!
It'd be so fascinating to hear your take on False Hydras!
great video! reimagined beholders and tarrasque could be interesting
Another banger! Keep it up!
Thank you so much!!
One of my favorite depictions of angels comes from the web comic; Kill 6 Billion Demons, especially in the earlier issues.
They’re like the biblically accurate angels but to walk mortal realms, they take on these shells that look like bodies but are made of stone and metal. When they get damaged the actual angel parts of them begin to seep out. It’s totally rad !
I love your videos, artwork, and RPG sentiments. Your biblical angel is amazing, and your story about the prophets seeming like rambling mad men was really entertaining.
If you are taking any suggestions for future monsters how about the other side of the alignment chart… a Hellhound! 🐕🔥
Yeah! Monster Manual Hellhounds really let me down. Like, fire breath is neat, but like, dig a bit deeper I think. Haha
Excellent art piece!
Your videos make me want to play dnd more
Ha! They have the same effect on me!! Cheers!!
That is one gorgeously apocalyptic piece of art.
Frighteningly beautiful!
Be not afriad tho! Haha!! Thanks, friend!!
Love the idea of making an angelic encounter something life changing/mind altering, on par w/ coming face-to-face w/ a Lovecraftian horror.
I think Werewolves would make an interesting monster to talk about. So many stories about Werewolves are pretty much the same i.e. someone gets cursed, they have to fight with the inner beast of the curse and either die or learn to live with it. I think thinking of alternative ways to handle the curse would be both difficult and fun!
Werewolves have been mentioned a few times today! I'll really think about it!! Thank you for the comment!!
Such a surprisingly wholesome comment section. Incredible video, phenomenal art, and very informative.
God the fact that you're underrated bums me out. Hopefully the interactions fans make helps this channel to grow because between your ideas and your absolutely stellar art you have the makings of top-tier content. Love the channel, really hope it flourishes.
I appreciate that! The thing is, I was happy with this channel back when it was just 2k subscribers! It's just so cool that I can do this at all!! The thing about numbers is that they can always go up, so I try to focus on the qualitative metrics, like all the cool conversations we're having and fun art I get to share with yall!! Cheers!!
So glad that you mentioned that ophanim are separate from seraphim. Honestly drives me crazy when people don’t acknowledge that “biblically accurate angels” aren’t all one thing.
Love the sense of scale in this
Thank you! The whole reason I drew a background was to get that scale. I feel like drawing the monster just on white background wasn't doing it for me. Haha
As a highly religious person myself who tends to take stuff like this fairly seriously...
This is SO COOL! I love it so much!
I know you asked a few videos back about ideas for more worldbuilding or monster videos. I would love to see your take on making world building | Realms (things like DnD’s elemental planes or the shadowfell and such) I’ve always found the concept of other realities in the ttrpg world fascinating but also sometimes very lackluster with the only real differences being the monsters and the tint on the zone to make it all dark or fire covered and so on.
Oh dang!! That’s a great idea!! Thanks!!
@@mapcrow Glad you like it, I can’t wait to see what you make with the idea!
Your work with pencils has definitely motivated me to rustle my own set up again and get back to some traditional art (I do predominantly digital right now).
Also: great timing lol, I just wrapped up a session where my players and an NPC defeated and “banished” a demon, and an angel came to get it and yeet it back to its side of the River Styx (in this world, the River Styx stands between the three realms where the fae, djinn, and humans live and the realms where demons and angels come from + where ghosts/spirits/souls eventually go). Decided not to go the Eldritch route but I loved adding little flavour text of angel motifs to this silly goth kid who just showed up outta nowhere XD. Tons of belts with eyes embossed/embroidered on them, casually saying “be not afraid” as he rolled up, a cage made out of the River Styx to keep the demon in, great fun. If Ruth (I saw a comment that said the Bible has great NPC names, you are perfectly correct lol) comes around again I’d love to slowly lean into his eldritch features until the players eventually realize what he is.
very cool and solid watch. 10/10
Just want to say I admire your willingness to use the Bible as a source for monster inspiration, especially in a horror theme. A lot of writers are reluctant to use this particular source for fear of stoking the ire of a few extremists.
the weird thing is that I was thinking about the throne angel and then this vid came out by accident
and that atually very good ,'>
What a happy accident!! Cheers!!
I would love to hear your DM voice for these celestial beings in a session, the presentation would be splendid
HA! I think it would probably be a Hall9000 impression! Cheers!!
Love this series! Since you've done Angles, how about Demons and Devils?
Yeah!! I gotta say, I've been thinking about it!! Probably something that stresses pocession over a corporeal body?? I'll add it to the list!!
great art!
Thank you!!
Dude, your drawing are insane!!! I wanna buy that artwork off you so bad!! hahaha
Thank you so much!! Right now, I'm want to keep all my artwork close by in-case I figure out a book project to do with them!!
Great content❤️
Great comment too❤️ Cheers!!
Cool
i love this.
I have a story template that could serve as inspiration:
monkeys paw story
using literal biblical angel as the wish granter. Paw comes to an arrogant person, wish for power, they get power, it all goes bad.
Paw comes to a wrathful person, they get revenge, it goes even worse.
Paw comes to a lustful person, they get hedonism, they become empty.
Paw comes to a broken person, they wish for righteousness, and they are healed.
You are the best dude. Greetings from Spain
Hey, thanks! Greetings from Cornfield USA!
Hey I loved this video
i shall forever be curious as to how to come up with descriptions for new angels
you could do a monster manual entry (?) on a tue-tue, a creature native to chiloe, on the chile's south.
Oh interesting! I'd not heard of that one! Looks somewhat similar in appearance to the Útburður of Iceland! Neat!!
you're basically writing my campaign for me at this point-
HA!! That makes me happy to hear! Hope it goes well!!
I love it! Would you consider doing the same for Goetic style Demons and/or Demons as fallen “biblical angels”?
I know you already did an episode on dragons, but...I would love to see building better wyrms!! Maybe some time down the line when you've exhausted many other options haha
Noted! Thanks!!
The more common type of angel in the bible is one who looks just like a regular human, and you might talk to it or fight with it thinking it's a person, only to figure out later it was a holy messenger with a mission from god. And honestly I think that's way cooler.
Oh for sure!! I think you could work some of that kind of stuff into this quest too!! The DM would just need to be careful not to take too much agency away from the players. HAha
I appreciate the comments about how what people call "Biblically accurate angels" is just one way angels present themselves in the mythology. Others went unrecognized as angels during their interactions with people, or at least until somehow they revealed themselves. (This kind is definitely fun in games, though!!)
The way I always interpreted biblical angels is that they were beings of almost pure concept, lacking the need for physical form the imposed their nature on the mind themselves and describing them is more a matter of metaphor and symbolism than accurate physical detail. The seraphim have six wings, two to cover their feet for they are not bound by earthly desires, two to bear them aloft for they are heavenly beings, and two to cover their face for even they are not worthy to see the face of God. That sort of thing.
I love the watercolor/color pencil combo. Is that an angel or Ms Beakman?
sniff... gone but not forgotten...
If this is what angels look like I fear what devil's and demons look like. Fantastic video btw
Haha! Yeah, demons would be a completely different thing… I’ve been thinking about it though!! Cheers!!
Devils and demons look like angels(the kind we are used to as pretty people), like pretty people, or nightmare creatures
If they are tempting people aka most of the time, they are in the form of an angel of light in order to deceive you. Perhaps even in the form of a normal though attractive human
Unless they are trying to be intimidating, then depending on power they are either a screw off huge dragon or a chimera of several creatures
Personally, I think Gnolls are some of the most interesting monsters and most tragic characters, especially if they regain some sentience of what they are doing, like Kurr in the 'Out of the Abyss' adventure.
In a similar vein, it would be interesting, in a "fantasy" setting to have cosmic horror elder gods behind things, but rather than them all being eldritch chaos, they could have various valences, like Light, Death, Life, Order, Chaos, and so forth, probably with a pantheon for each, and they are all scheming against each other. The "Biblically accurate angels" could be one or more of those factions.
As an aside, it's not really a big thing that a small reference in a mythological text gets blown up into its own genre. That's basically what happened with Greek, Egyptian, and Norse mythology, though to be fair, those are generally more rich.
since Vecna is famous again, how about building a better lich? maybe with variants? the space lich from Spelljammers looks great, we need more!
Liches are getting a lot of votes! I'll probably post a poll to figure this out! Haha!! Thank you!!
This really makes me think of one of the books from the book series "Goon Squad" where and angelic type creature shows up on Earth and starts judging everyone and killing those who have "sinned"... spoilers in this creatures eyes, if you've made any mistake at all, you're screwed.
The thing about "biblical" angels is that the bible is a collection of books written over a very long period of time. Angels have usually looked like whatever the dominant concept of a "divine being" looked like at the time. You have sphinx and lamassu type things much like those of Egpytian and Mesopotamian mythology. With Persian and eventually Neoplatonist influence there's abstract balls of rings and eyeballs. With classical Greek and Roman paganism come the pretty naked people with wings. Etc.
This is very true. I wanted to keep the video focused and short, but I was really wanting to get into source crit and exegesis! Probably a bit much for a DnD video. Haha
Nice Zorn palette :D
Love a good Zorn palette!
YAAAAAYYY
I want to see sirens next
It would be great to see your take on vampires, I feel that they are not so well represented anymore
Vampires are tough, but I’ll think about it!! Thanks!!
This is my second biblical angel video today. Should i be worried?
The revelation is nigh!! Haha!!
Errybody remembering the WINGS WITH EYES AND WHEELS WITH EYES from Ezekiel. No one remembering the hot bois from Genesis.
