I absolutely love the look of your Dwarf - he gives me such a perfect old school vibe, reminiscent of the better illustrations from the 1st edition AD&D manuals. And that is the best illustration of a manticore I’ve yet seen!
I wouldn't let this cat jump on my laps to get caress, to rub, and to cuddle... ...at least not until he stops baring his teeth. (But I would have let this gnome protect my garden 😏)
Only 2 minutes in and this has already reignited my hunger for watercolor painting and also given me things to think about re: narration in my homebrew vampire game :D
I'm surprised how many comments are about the (incredibly awesome) art instead of the content itself. Anyway, this playlist is a true gem, and I'm happy I found it. Ironically enough (..I guess..), I do wish that in the future, you will have a drawing/painting workshop playlist. That will be amazing as well. Anyway... thank you. Shine on!
This reminds me of that PBS show where the guy would illustrate the story as it was being told. This, was very fun to watch, but I'm afraid I was so caught up in watching the artistry that I hardly paid attention! I guess I'll have to try again without the visuals, lol.
Thank you! Glad to have you on the discord! I hope folks find these videos and follow the references and continue the conversation in the community. I hope it's helpful for designers and game masters!!
I have been studying traditional art with ink, charcoal, and watercolor, but have always been a gamer and a fantasy nerd. This has really inspired me to finally start making my own fantasy art!
I think there's so much good we can get from looking at video game design. Their design space has really benefitted from having a very large amount of players to test ideas on over the years.
very interestings points I am building a dungeon crawler type of adventure, and I am really fond of trying to put little details about the dungeons throught the decors. giving foreshadowing of stuff to come, what it seem to be used as, or even piece of who the master of this place. and many of your video really brought points to continue thinking throught this dungeon. so thank you. keep the amazing work!
Great content man, as always. The watercolor manticore reminds me a lot of early LoZ illustrations... Looking forward to receiving my physical copy of Old Roads next month!
The discord invite in the video has expired, but this new one should last longer: the new bitly link is "mapcrowdiscord"! I am sorry for doing it this way, but I don't want a bunch of bots in there!
This was really interesting to listen to, and I can definitely see how I might apply this is any kind of storytelling! My only complaint is that we didn't get to see the rest of the artwork be completed 😛
I don't understand how anyone can equate an NPC being specific about a goal they have as rail roading. It's not like the party is in any obligation to accept the terms or mission and even if they are told and then move to a location, they could always decide to stay at the same location, give up, join the opposing side. Fight each others. I guess sure the DM could keep manifesting God ex-machina event that force player into a certain path but just having an NPC state a mission isn't railroading, preventing player from deviating from a path or explore or explore other option would be.
In game where not every action modifies the story, but you can interpretate it, for example in a Pokémon game when you try to catch a pokemon for the game is the same if you catched it at the first try or if you had to use 50 pokeballs, the story doesn't change, BUT you as player can interpretate the scene like a hard battle and imaginate how much efford took to the character. In wich type of narrative is that included? it is emergent narrative?
Well, according to the article I'm referencing, they are different modes. Neither one is better or worse, they are just springing from different places. So there are four distinctions mentioned in the article.@@Momuzzz
Shoot! I thought I had credited them in the description. It think it's HDK 50 † The village in the frozen mountains by KOBOLD, which you can find on Bandcamp.
Is it just me, or is the discord invite bust? Other than that, great video as always. My personal preference is focussing on the emerging narrative, though these other narrative forms do aid in bringing that about. I also really like how the ink and watercolour piece came together. As is usually the case when I look at people paint there was this second where I thought 'Oh no', but in the end it looked marvelous.
Thank you! I think emergent narrative is what most ttrpgs are designed for, but some are scaffolded with more embedded and enacted narrative than others. My preference is for a rhizomatic game with a strong emphasis on emergent narrative!

Thank you very much! The dwarf is kinda how I like to draw dwarves. I drew a whole graphic novel about one called "The Savage Beard of She Dwarf!"
@@mapcrow is that available online somewhere? love your work
I like the idea that the monster you drew is just a cat, but that guy is just a little garden gnome who sees it as a monster.

Wow… hadn't ever seen how watercolor & ink art is made.
You definitely make it look easy. Awesome skill!
this was a fun talk! Also your picture looks incredible. You've got so much range holy crap
Thank you! I don't know about range, but I enjoy studying many ways of making!

Wow that process was fascinating, really made me want to emulate the style! I gotta get a piece like that on my wall
Thank you!! Give it a go, it’s fun!!

I'm actually curious what's the name of the style

Thank you! Yeah, I have a link to Katsuya Terada's work for the series in the description! I'll probably start mailing Old Roads next week! Cheers!
😂 Totally missed that in the description. Just goes to show you nailed it!

AWESOME artwork!
great video as always mate
Thank you so much! Cheers!
I almost never play ttrpg's but man do I dig your presentational style.
that manticore is so cool!!!
I don't always hold with academic discourse in gaming but this was pretty good and I'm going to read that article in more detail.

Dwarf Fortress? :-D

In wich type of narrative is that included? it is emergent narrative?
(Sorry if my english has errors)
Yes! That is emergent because the story is authored by the player using the game’s systems.
@@mapcrow But there is no distinction between things that are really happening in the story and mechanics that the players interpret, right?
Well, according to the article I'm referencing, they are different modes. Neither one is better or worse, they are just springing from different places. So there are four distinctions mentioned in the article.@@Momuzzz
Is this dwarf fortress?
It’s dungeons and dragons, so kinda?
