- Matty and George from The 1975 share how their summer hit 'Part Of The Band' blossomed from an 'E Street Band'-style demo to the cello-adorned lead single from their latest album. Find out how Jack Antanoff helped turn the song on its head, and how Matty's bridge for an unreleased Benjamin Francis Leftwich song made its way into 'Part Of The Band's’ chorus.

Can George record an audiobook or something his voice is crumbly like a good biscuit and I love it
A side gig 😉
Very hot voice to be honest
Most british metaphore ever haha
Right? It’s like a thick not overly sweet syrup. Just lovely
I agree. I adore his voice. I could listen to it for hours.
I love this so much because it helps highlight how much George does to give THE 1975 their signature sound. He is as big a part of this as Healey but seems so content tto be tucked in the back playing drums. Massive respect for him.
no without George there would be no 1975, he's their main producer and creator of The 1975 sound
This is like many bands
george literally IS the sound. the main reason i watched this video is because seeing george with his laptop is like getting a chance to see the real wizard of oz.
@@incubrian Completely 💯!!! That's why he is so heavily included in interviews ect as he is a main man !! Not a lot of people realise how much he does for the band.
@@ExploreWithEthanI guess you could say he is
Part of the band
everyone playing instruments they don’t normally play…. and yet this track still feels so cohesive and spectacular
You can say whatever you want about Matty, but you cant deny that him & George are absolute masters in their craft and highly talented people!
Matty raising the roof during the individual cello parts was fucking hysterical
Love watching Matty vibing to his own music, he’s amazing
I love seeing how this song came together. Especially since it was such an unexpected first single I really appreciate it having had time to listen to it more and now hearing the breakdown it’s such a masterpiece
Insane to hear the breakdown. These guys are massively talented!
You can understand the words in that part of the band demo better than some of their actual songs
The Springsteen rising voice in the old part of the band is so insanely awesome
Just sounds like a Bleachers song to me
I liked it! I don't care what Matty says.
Perhaps the whole "playing not your instrument" thing is part of what makes Being Funny feel so fresh. I've seen others comment--and I totally agree-- that this album feels like something so brand new even though the 1975 had been around forever.
So great to hear this much from George!
definitely love how things evolve. the original idea was good but pretty safe. they took some chances and ended up with a truly interesting song. and the overall mix of the album version is fantastic
Omg! George is a frikken machine. His ear is sublime! I hope they release more stuff like this on their channel.
You guys NEED to upload the full videos onto youtube I'm telling you, it would be one of the most popular podcasts out there. I love this podcast so much, and I'm only saying this beacuase I want you guys to keep making these and succeed! They help me so much. You can easily get sponsers and stuff to make up for the ad revenue
Your wish is my command, we've just launched our Patreon channel and the first video up is the full length 1975 www.patreon.com/tapenotes
1975 demos are unmatched. it's not living demo without vocals is oh so nice
Shoutout to Justin Hawkins Rides Again. Dude was 30 secs into breaking down the song and immediately thought it was a very Bruce Springsteen thing to do.
Really interesting to hear this, I really like this direction they've gone. Tape notes is really one of my favourite podcast formats with awesome guests!
Really 🥺
I absolutely love the version of Part of The Band that came out on the record but I have to say the original demo with the guitars sounds amazing too. I think it would be killer live.
I'm going to need about 10000000 more hours of this please.
STREET HASSLE!!!! I knew the strings in Part Of The Band reminded me of something and Matty has pinpointed it here!!!!!!! Street Hassle by Lou Reed; such a great song. Fantastic to see the 75 boys paying homage to an underrated all-time great in Reed!
Underrated 😅
Lou Reed is amazing and I totally see your homage here
The production is very similar to 91 by Bleachers (Jack Antonoff) who Matty said added the cellos in here.
Fascinating to hear the similarities and differences in how we all approach songwriting and arrangements
this song is perfect to me, how their instruments harmonize each other is truly peaceful
I love learning the background to songs, things that you could never have imagined just from listening to them. What I find particularly interesting about this is how the lyrics seem to have been the last component to be added fully, and yet are the most compelling part of the song.
The demo of Part of the band was so much groovier 🫠
How is this not at a million
We have something special in store for you coming very soon. Stay tuned 📻
I actually significantly prefer the original version from the start of this video - and now I’m sad i can never hear the full thing like that
Me too
Matty said they have plans to release a bunch of demos in the future, fingers crossed
@@nearlysimon I hope it is a collection of demos from all the albums and not just the Drive Like I Do collection of songs (that has been promised)
Why? It's awful. It sounds like a bad Kurt Vile / War On Drugs song.
@@musicalman1995 why you saying that like Kurt vile is bad lol
Love how he mentions how he has different voices and characters
Man, that Hold Steady comparison at the start is so spot on. This is such a Craig Finn type song. They could easily cover it, and it would fit right in. Amazing that Matty knows them!
Never heard a song be improbable and natural at the same time. Such a glorious tune.
George’s voice is so soothing 🥰
My producer and songwriter brain is absolutely geeking out over this
they are all so talented.
and i love george’s nails
I fall in love with the demos every time they're on tape notes. I hope the guys realize that they can be much looser than they think they can be. Sometimes that polishing stage can actually take off some of the most interesting parts. Either way, I still love BFIAFL.
my favorite song off the album from day 1!
I'd honestly never heard any of their stuff until I watched them on the Big Weekend this week, and although I liked one song (Love It When We Made It), I'm feeling a little like they might be worth putting time into "getting". And the fact they produce themselves (and do it so well) is another reason to like them.
highly reccomend. no band is doing it like the 1975. they’re masters of not only sound but visuals, set design, and world building. if ur gonna do a deep dive listen to their stuff in chronological order, it’s so sick seeing how their sound evolves over the years.
That's what you call creativity.
i neeeeeed more of this!! i was obsessed with the ABIIOR tape notes and i love actually seeing the video!!
George is my favorite musician of all time
i mean old version is nice but i love the final version a lot more its way more unique
I agree, the original version is really good but not surprising, the actual version was really pleasantly surprising to hear as a lead single
This song gets better the more you listen to it! I love part of the band! IVE NOT PICKED UP THAT IN A THOUSAND FOURHUNDRED DAY NINE HOURS AND SIXTEEN MINUTES BABE
THAT DEMO IS AMAZING
Jon is the best interviewer in music. Absolute legend1
they definitely need to flesh that demo out and release it as an alt version
Thank you for this! So rad to watch the two of them dissect their craft and share it with us. I love and appreciate the process!
Damn I didn't realize Grealish was such a talented producer... hats off
Holy shit this version better than the album version by a mile.
Ahhh I hope they release the first POTB demo version one day, it is sooo good
Damn, George's voice is so deep but he is also the backup vocal at the last part of Robbers. So much different hahaha
Insane how a single song came together
deadass the first version sounds sick
It's so cool to see how the different parts of the songs come together and create that 1075 sound!
Always Love hearing Matty&George share stories about making music 🙌
Interesting that he mentioned The Hold Steady, as it's the first band I thought of when hearing 'Wintering' on the new album for the first time.
Think wintering is def bleachers
Which The Hold Steady song reminds you of Wintering?
Nice. Good call!
My favorite song on the album by far
never knew i needed this so badly
Omg the reference to the hold steady????? I love it, I’m so happy he knows who that band is 😂
when i first heard the record version of "POTB" i immediately thought Springsteen! Love it so much and it's amazing to see where it started and where it finished
I like this broken down into smaller videos format for the interview. Makes it easier to digest and come back to things, although I am a bit impatient
I want this version of part of the band omg
I want that original version of this song so fucking bad.
So interesting. What a great idea for a podcast
goddddddd i wish they had done this for one of their first two albums
Damn that first demo….. the instrumental is amazing
these guys are genius
Are you kidding me? 1:02 That demo of Part of the Band is SO much better than the original. My god!!
I don't think the final section would slap as hard if the song wasn't built up slowly and had a strong drum from the outset
the demo *is* the original tho
no it’s not at all wtf lol , why would u want them to release the version that sounds just like all their old music
Nah
These are professional musicians.
COME ON MATE, DONT BE SHY. UPLOAD THE WHOLE THING ALREADY
this is incredible
Jack Grealish, great producer!
I would really like to see there part where he shows their EQ curves for his voice.
They need to release that version as a VIP
I‘d like to have a video how „happiness“ and „oh Caroline“ were made 🤭
1:42 when Matty says "we used it for something I can't remember what it was," I'm pretty sure he meant as the verse/A section of "Wintering" later on the album...."She walked down the stairs feelin herself like she just won a court case" I do agree with Matty though I think the chorus of "Part of the Band" works way better in the final version :)
I need that E Street version
That very end part definitely got used for Wintering
“I love the idea that you’re constantly grasping at…” “straws” 😂
As an American and a City fan I appreciate the Jack Grealish reference 😂
idk why but i really like when matty says the word "Macho" HAHAHAHHA
The moment when Part of the Band turns into Wintering!!!
So good!
Benjamin Francis Leftwich 🖤
the beginning of that first POTB sounds just like the cure!!! I love it
the part of the band phoebe bridgers show story is one of things you live for as a fan ❤
that part of the band v.2 's a bop tho
1:41 is my actual mood
God this is just porn for the aspiring producer lol love it love it love it. Also, this song is really in the same vein of Bon Ivers AUATC from a couple years ago
Just realised he sings my my my on part of the band and happiness
WE NEED THE WHOLE EPISODE ON VIDEO PLX 🙏🏻
cada vez me gusta mas esta cancióoon
I usually would record random melody notes on my phone as I'm strolling when inspiration strikes. it's interesting seeing the raw tracks and getting to hear the frequencies here too. vocals have this peaky frequency sometimes when mixing and I think if I get too in my head about eq it can be frustrating but I learn from the channels here on RUclips too that have great content for that stuff. Hyup the lads
So he wrote a bridge for the phoebe bridgers opening. Sounds about right.
I understand not wanting to release the whole episode on RUclips but why not put the video on spotify?
Ladys and gents, the best band in world -- The 1975.
and you were like 'nooee'
Matty should guest in Song Exploder!
I want the Bruce Springsteen version of Part of The Band lol
The chello bow on the 330 that Matty talks about sounds like Red Dead Redemption
their demos are always sooo much better than the actual tracks
That version of “part of the band” is actually better than the version they released. Hope they release that version too.
