OMG seeing your sticker collection threw me WAY back to being an 8-10 yr old having a sticker book and swapping between friends. Truly an educational part of growing up learning about negotiations, communication, the importance of placing value on items..... I don't take that time of my life for granted anymore! 🥹👌🏽🙏🏽✨
First of all- I love all your art, both the cat tree and the desert scenes. I just love the feeling your illustrations give and the palettes you choose. Secondly, the way I try to battle perfectionism is by reminding myself that what brings me joy is the creation, not the final product. Of course having a nice finished piece is great, but you could live quite happily if you create lots of art even if none of it gets to a "finished" or "perfect" state, whereas you could not be happy if you were not creating at all. The act of arting is the majority of the fun, and while you're making something you're not super happy with tell yourself "yeah but if I see it through it will lead to different things". Every thing you make leads to something else, a new piece, a new style, a new idea. It's all WORTH making, even if it won't be a "final product", even if it's not "useful" it still has use.
I'm super glad you're talking about perfectionism today! It's just what I needed. I fought against my perfectionism all week. It's so hard! I am learning to silence this voice by listening to alternative thoughts, such as "Does the project and process need to be sooo complicated and difficult to achieve to be good?". Bravo for facing your desert cat and your cat tree is also great!
With the journalling, I started with super small A6 even A7 blank, grid, or dot grid mostly with Midori Paper. Idk how that is for paints or whatever as I'm mostly just pen with cute stickers. I find it so nice to not have rules! No time restrictions, no limits on the page use, no expectation to be creative every time (sometimes I'm super cute and colourful with lots of stickers but sometimes it's purely just writing). Just be intuitive with it and try not to let external expectations make u feel like you're not doing enough because you are so enough! Love your vlogs and your work so much Megan be kind to urself and ur journalling!!
ugh megan the perfectionism is so real. i totally hear you on the bad mood when a project isn't fitting to my extreme expectations.... i really want to work on breaking that streak for myself
I have akways struggled with journals, what ive been doing recently is scrapbooking in a blank journal for the days I want to journal about. I like to keep little tickets from shows, business cards from art markets, even receipts and sticking that in my book to make it look nicer!
I started out strong with journaling and cutesy designed pages but I also eventually burned out. I gave up designing the pages and just stuck to writing down my days, since that's the only important part. Getting out your thoughts and remembering your days is more important to than making these perfect/cute looking pages
this is one of my favorite videos of yours! I love that you always highlight the interesting art events you attend and show artists you enjoy. Wrt hobonichi alternatives for the same scrapbook/journal feeling, I'd recommend midori MD (sorry if you know about it already!!) The paper is smooth and has a soft cream color, and there's the option of putting on a clear plastic case like hobonichis. also, i really enjoyed seeing your sticker collection! there's something about seeing what kind of stickers people enjoy that is so fulfilling
hey megan love your t shirts!! it would be a cool idea to show the shirts that you buy from other artists and where to get them would love to support other artist and wear the merch! :)
i also got stressed out by my hobonichi cousin so i switched to an sterling ink notebook! they have tomoe river paper and a bunch of sizes and planners!
8:16 I second the comment about the hobonichi day free for you! I feel like the Weeks is such a different format that you might not like it if you want to use it how you use your cousin now. I also agree that it’s fine to let go of the blank pages, but the cousin is hefty so I can understand the overwhelm & maybe guilt of not using the pages. I started my hobonichi journey this year with the a6 hobonichi and find that I can’t journal daily, but have the capacity and interest to back journal sometimes. I imagine backjournaling is more difficult in an a5. I would recommend watching Yoseka’s (or any other creators’ on YT) techo kaigi/planner update videos! they give me a lot of inspo for how to use spreads in new ways, even in the middle of the year or for next year.
Love seeing all the toys! They’re like small sculptures for the home. I keep the ones I have with eyes facing out the window to keep the birds from pecking at my screen.
heyyy! this is a lovely vlog~ love seeing all the fun lil toys and your sticker collection i always appreciate them! when it comes to journal, i second the person who mentioned abt hobonichi day-free! could be a5 or a6, your choice. they have monthly spreads + blank pages so it doesn’t pressure you to write everyday + u can still try and do scrapbooky stuff too + it has tomoe river paper s ~~ good luck with journaling, i hope you have fun! i’ve mentioned before you inspired me to go back to making art so you talking about struggling with perfectionism and realizing it’s okay is so comforting. sending you love, megan!
Five Points is real fun! This year was my first time going since pre Covid. I was happy to get a cute coral Konatsuya fig and also bought a lil cheesepuff tiger.
I am also struggling to stop trying to be a perfectionist with every artwork I try to put out. Mainly because it's making me feel incredibly disappointed in my work rather than appreciating it. I'm currently trying to launch my own shop for the first time and it is taking so long because I constantly over analyze my artwork! ): I appreciate you being transparent about this because I really needed to hear your message lol
I have honestly just gone back and used blank hobonichi pages for journaling on days where one page doesn’t feel like enough. I am not bothered by things getting out of order b/c I have no plans to read through any of it cover to cover later
I kept a daily hobonichi in 2023 and just wrote what happened that day at the top if I didn't feel like filling it in day of and it still serves a little purpose! now I have the weeks and I use it as a normal planner for my teaching job lol but I miss journaling! I think the weeks could be good if you wrote 2/3 sentences about your day in the day section and did a spread for the week maybe :0
@@MeganWangart I have banned NYC in the summer, never again. I've been August and now July, I left a day earlier than I wanted to. Godspeed to you and all the homies living there. Y'all enduring for sure! 😭
If you feel overwhelmed with the daily hobonichi I can recommend the hobonichi day free! It has a calendar and no dates :)
omg for some reason I thought the day free meant it was just their weekly/hourly spreads instead of just blank pages.. this seems perfect omgg
I have been using the day free A6 for the past two years and I love it!

I’d def say go for a hobonichi weeks over the bigger ones, it’s great for organising your weeks and then keep sketching seperate
I saw you looking at a Dapper Notes notebook. His RUclips videos are soooo satisfying!

I’ve seen bound notebooks at B&N that has Tomoe River paper in it. Haven’t tried it, but that might be an option.
The toys are beautiful) thanks for your video)
