  • If you have misfires when you start your engine in cold weather - the cause is usually vacuum leaks around the inlet manifold. This could be the manifold gaskets, missing blanking plugs, a torn PCV valve or a damaged inlet tract.
Finding vacuum leaks is usually confirmed by squirting brake cleaner/propane/anything to hand at the engine and this method is difficult to perform without losing your eyebrows. Alternatively a smoke machine can be used but this is often beyond the capabilities of the average DIY'er. I show how these can be found on a BMW M62 engine using very cheap BMW Diagnostics that can be bought from many places for just a few quid.
    OBDII to 19-pin adaptor: amzn.to/33CFRWN
    INPA: amzn.to/33D2NoT
This routine using INPA diagnostics shows you how to find them using the adaptation values. We also explain how the ECU tries to compensate for these laks - and when it fails why it stores the 'adaptations at limits' error code.
    Repairs can be found below:

Further information on using INPA to find running problems:

Although this routine is shown on the BMW M62 V8 engine, the method is just as useful on all BMW engines in conjunction with INPA diagnostics
