Huge Sci-fi nerd here and the first time I tried watching The Expanse, it didn't connect with me and I didn't get past the first episode or two - I don't remember why. I finally gave it another chance and binged the first three seasons in like 2 weeks. It definitely connected this time. Now I wonder if I should start reading the books before the next season comes out.
The show is actually not immediately engaging. There's so much world building to get done and the Belter patois is a challenge.
If you're going to read the books you might like to start with,
The Butcher of Anderson Station, a short story about how Fred Johnson first joined the OPA.
There's a bit of filler in season 1 tbf. Also yes you should read the books they are amazing mate. The show is a damn good adaptation though.
I was a show watcher, then a book reader. Honestly, for me, after reading the books, I could not rewatch the show. The books are so good, that it actually made me mad of all the changes they made in the show. I say keep your mind fresh and stick with the show, for now, but that's just me.
Same! I tried to watch it and could make it past the second episode. Picked it up 6 months later and I devoured it like a ravenous glutton. I’ve heard a lot of other people say the same so I think there may be a lot more fans when season 4 is finally released.
The show is a slow burner for sure, but then it starts to accelerate with the power of an Epstein drive.

Never before have i watched a show where I have like so many of the main characters. Usually you just find one or two...

It's because all the characters are well-written in the book series. Most TV shows only write one or two characters in any detail, while everyone else is one-dimensional. And that gets quite boring very quickly.

The show being cancelled ironically actually helped it a lot, because it got the fans out in force to spread the gospel of The Expanse in an attempt to save it, and turned it from a niche show into a big deal.

The most important thing is ... Jeff Bezos is a fan and a big one. The TV history tells us, a campaign can't save a show, but a fan can.
And I must feel concern that hes going to abuse it as an advertising vehicle. We can already see this in the New Terra trailer. It was really cool as a one-off, but I fear it will be an increasingly regular and intrusive thing.
Yeah maybe he is. But he is not only one doing decisions. So huge fan support and numbers places him in good spot on board meetings.

This is an amazing story. Was it saved because of fate and the stars being in alignment? Partly. But mostly it was determined people (Cas, in particular) that made sure they were in the right place at the right time and they could not be ignored. I am cheering!!!!

Rayman123 really, is it only me who really felt a bit disappointed by the eighth book. I've only read it once, but I felt kind of sad after, and empty. Especially when they destroyed the shipyard, setting humanity back to what is essentially their Stone Age at this point

As much as I dislike Jeff Bezos, I am VERY glad that he brought back "The Expanse". The show was amazingly great; they paid a great amount of attention to detail and every time I thought I knew what was about to happen, IT DIDN'T happen. The show was mostly unpredictable and it never failed to fascinate me.
There’s literally no reason to dislike him except that he’s successful and wealthy.
Season 5 guarantees season 6 and more. Season 5 story will blow everyone away. Also gonna say it...Bobby Draper is the greatest character on the expanse. No spoilers but damm she will rock in future Seasons, no one holds a candle to Draper

@@shilliojr She is an amazing character, but so are Naomi, Holden, Alex, Amos (Timothy), Clarrisa, Drummer, Miller, Fred, and on and on. Honestly the heartbreaking story of Cara and Xan (book 8 and Strange Dogs) intrigued me the most and I hope book 9 involves them as well.
@@cb2000a Couldn't agree more mate. Don't forget Miller, Filip (who I didnt like at first but in retrospect has a great arc), Badasarala... Drummer is way better in the show though tbh, wasn't that impressed with book version tbh. Anna, Elvi, Duarte and Teresa all great too :) just a great series man.

The Expanse was one of the few sci fi shows, it is just the future, without impossible tech like transporters and magic shields.
Amazing story and I hope the Orville obtains the same bright future as the Expanse.
Also, Bezos's company is at the moment renovating one of the launch pads at Cape Kennedy to launch their new rockets.
OMG........I love the Orville. Brilliant scripts so far. You can't trust FOX. They are know for cuting good shows...... Firefly.
Please don't compare the two. It is an insult to compare The Expanse to a third rate show like The Orville.
@Marcus Knightingale Hey, I love Family Guy! The Orville is ok, and yes, I get a few chuckles when watching the series. But it is apple and oranges when compared to The Expanse. And the Orville scripts are mostly re-trends of TNG. And that is fine. It works for the show. But is going overboard when someone says the scripts are "brilliant." ;-)

You know, I can understand economic issues. It's when they cancel it even when it's popular that really jerks my chain.

the big network executives are about money not about quality ... they didnt like the idea of spending money on a 3rd place show ... but a 3rd place show for 11 years is better than a 1st place show for 2 years ... something executives forget because they are all short term thinkers .... unlike bezos who is a long term thinker ... sure it wont make billions a season but a several million is better than zero

Its good that i love that violin music and some old western vibes though, i am all for that appeal. I wish there was a bit more scifi appearances of things to it.
Even more chinese elements, it seems thats not really explored. Chinese people were in early america too i guess employed to build railroads, its really going for 'historical' accuracy over science fiction (not that any particular physics law is broken in a huge way)

Firefly I see as more looking to how although technology will evolve, we will be not. Civilization would devolve once again. Ignoring the science would seem fitting. And there being plenty of science fiction, it's nice to have at least one future western.

It's sad. I've never met Cas or Jeff but the story suggests that both are visionary men. Jeff could have looked at some KPIs and immediately denied any further seasons of this show. He didn't. He listened to his gut. That is the difference between an entrepeneur and a general manager. @Popcast - Thank you for sharing this story and thank you for this video.

I love the Expanse show. Same level, or slightly above, Firefly. Firefly was just soooo good.
No... bar none, Firefly was definitely best sci-fi series... thanks to Joss Whedon and extraordinary chemistry of actors and set crew. Then I would rank Farscape and Expanse evenly a close second.
@@deozeo4442 You say bar none like it´s a fact. Firefly was good, had great character chemistry and the wit, everything you need really on a relatively small budget. I rank the Expanse slightly above it due to its enviroments. To me, it just looks better and the chemistry between the characters are very good, not firefly good, but still very good and all in all, in a very very very very close race to the finish like... the Expanse wins by a nose... for me anyway.
I see zero similarity between Firefly and Expanse. In fact, i dont quite see the rave from scifi fans for a relatively un-scifi show set in another solar systen. I find it enjoyable to watch yet i mostly forget its scifi to be fair, its like a western with the bare minimum of space to keep it in the genre

I discovered The Expanse a couple of months ago. Best series I've ever seen.
God I can't wait for this. I found the Expanse by accident on Amazon. It turned into a binge. I haven't watched anything like this since BSG or Babylon 5 or Star Trek. I'm not comparing because there is something absolutely different and special about this series. Funny this is about what Cas Anvar did is exactly what attracted me to the Expanse. Cas Anvar and Wes Chatham sold it with Alex and Amos. They are both my favorite characters off the series. This was a great video and now i'm an even bigger Cas Anvar fan.
It's the realism. I don't think realistic space travel has even been attempted before in scifi. There's always some Maguffin to handwave away the problems with it, like warp drives etc. And gravity is always wrong in other science fiction shows, as is the way objects move in space; IE not in straight lines. The expanse even has radiation in it, which I have definitely never seen before in scifi. It all just feels more real than everything else. Credit to the authors for that part of it though.
It is rumored that when the expanse met with the amazon online streaming department, the first question they asked was "how many seasons we could order". That's the "complications" Bezos was talking about when he met the crew, not the price, not the limitation of production fee. At that time, the expanse production team wasn't prepared for a multiple-season order. The best they hoped for was one new season.

I remember signing those fan petitions to get The Expanse back. Wasn't sure if the petitions helped but I wanted to do what I could. Now I've rewatched the first 3 seasons in a binge session and am eagerly awaiting what's next. Too bad Dark Matter couldn't get similar treatment though...

DISCO is good on its own merits. So is The Orville. So is The Expanse. There's room enough for all of them.

A latecomer to the world of The Expanse, I have just binge-watched all 4 seasons currently available on Amazon, and am quickly becoming an avid fan, I will read all the books and novellas, most likely on my kindle and not so patiently await the season five and beyond...

They'll need at least 8 seasons to tell the whole story, and preferably about 10 seasons. I really hope whoever made this decision at Amazon stays in the job for a few more years.

Syfy didn't get anything from the show being streamed so they had little choice. It's Netflix who will regret not picking it up. Not a single thing on there even half as good as The Expanse. This will drive people from Netflix to Amazon, because the show is just that good.
syfy will kick their own arse for being so short sighted and greedy tbh ... if they just accepted 3rd place and went for longevity they would have made more money than star trek in all it's versions ... but nope they only want the 1st place shows for a year or two ...

Maybe, but maybe not. I just don't think SyFy was the right medium for The Expanse. I mean, I love the show! But, the series is science fiction and HEAVY on the science! Plus, it is political ( not political like left versus right).
The show caters to an audience that wants more than ships zipping across the galaxy. And network television that has only an American audience won't get the numbers it needs. Streaming, on the other hand, caters to a GLOBAL audience. Now, the numbers are there to justify production.

I just came across this show late last year on Amazon. It’s, hands down, my new favorite sifi series. The SYFY channel really shot their selves in the foot selling this one. I’m so looking forward to season 5. Absolutely amazing efx. For almost half of episode one, I was thinking, “dang they’re spending a LOT of time & bucks with the vomit comet, but then I realized that it’s at least 90% practical efx. To me, that makes the show all that much better and believable. Still, it’s kinda funny because in the back of my mind, I’m thinking, “it’s that far in the future but they still haven’t figured out artificial gravity yet”. But then again, I’m glad they haven’t because then it’s really no different than every other space series out there.
So glad the show was saved and hope it’s on for another 5 seasons, at least, or many, many more.
I bought some of the books, audio books, and season 1-3 on blu ray to support the show.
I also sent several emails to Amazon, I was incredibly happy when all our efforts worked out.
I was genuinely saddened by the show's cancellation.

So, if i understand properly, Amazon was getting ton of views from the work of scyfi thanks to a more profitable deal, while scyfy was taking all the risks (would this show work or not). When scyfy realized they were getting screwed in favor of amazon (VOD), amazon came into the spotlight, posing as a savior, and officially took over something they were already benefiting from.
You gotta respect Besos's talent for business and marketing.

BTW, Stargate fans have been fighting as hard or harder for their show(s) to come back to no avail so far. This kind of fan support doesn’t guarantee someone will pick up the show.
Yeah and the last SG show wasnt so great too :( But I see a little of stargate in the last few episodes of the Expanse ...doesn't the ring remind you a bit of the 'supergate' and you have an ancient civilization of ring builders that were wiped out by something. I would be willing to bet that this process of ceding habitable solar systems with the protomolecule was the key to admittance to this alien race's interstellar club and at one point they admitted someone they shouldnt have.
