The two remedies I recall from childhood that actually worked where swallowing a heaping teaspoon of sugar, or holding your breath while swallowing water 10 times. As an adult, I tried the sugar one again, but it failed, then did the 10 swallows, and that did the trick.👍😎✌🗽

My uncle George Kyte died from the hiccups. He was a very healthy 84 year old who still played golf and had no major medical problems. He got the hiccups while a close relative was visiting. They tried every suggestion they could find to stop the hiccuping. After 4 or 5 days of relentless hiccups he had become very weak and tired so they brought him to the hospital. The doctors were unable to stop the hiccups and several days later his heart stopped.
By the way, George was a fantastic guy to be around.... very intelligent and witty. He had been the vice president of one of the early predecessors to the modern shopping mall, G Fox and Co. in Hartford, Connecticut. Uncle George fought in WWI and retired to Hilton Head Island in the early 60's. He also smoked great smelling cigars!
Several weeks after he died I was spending time searching through some medical journals and discovered a study that scientifically tested many potential cures for hiccups and they claimed that the only one that was actually proven to work was the drinking of bitters with either a lime or a lemon, I can't recall which. Regretfully I was a couple weeks too late to help George , may he rest in peace.

As an adult, I tried the sugar one again, but it failed, then did the 10 swallows, and that did the trick. It seems very strange they would let George go on so long without some sort of relief! Knocking him out for awhile should do the trick. My aunt was run over by a drunk driver, and they put her in a coma for 3 months. She came out of it, and lived another 20 years to age 90! Seems to me they really dropped the ball on George, and I'm sorry for that!👍😎✌🗽

@@TOM-C. Thanks. I think by the time they got him to the hospital they were dealing with a very frail and weakened 84 year old and maybe inducing a coma might have been too risky. As I recall they did try some medicines... maybe barbituates or muscle relaxers. But they never got rid of it. I remember hearing they did try many different well known ideas for a cure and none worked.

I was at the check out at Walmart and the young lady had a bad case of Hiccups. I told her there is an easy cure. She said what is it. Just slowly say " I have the hiccups" She did and they went away. She asked how did you do that. I said the sentence interrupts the diaphragm. She started to laugh and said thank you. I said you are welcome and have better afternoon.

I cured a long running slate of hiccups by standing in my head while drinking a beer followed by eating a snickers bar.
It work though I have no idea why. I have not had hiccups since then, about 35 years.

Take a deep breath, squeeze your nostrils shut, and then swallow 3 times. Works every time.
