I had a beautiful Asian boyfriend in College. I love him dearly, he wad the most beautiful guy I have ever seen. Soon he dumped me and moved to Seattle. He send me an email saying he was getting married to a woman, that it was his obligation to preserve the family name as the oldest boy. Its been almost twenty years and I still love you. David Hang...
This is so sad. Being Vietnamese, the only male child on my dad's side of the family and gay I completely understand Long's point of view. My parent expect me to continue the blood line and ignore who I am. But I refuse to believe my fate is already decided for me, I will strive for what I believe in. And I hope that Long will do so too. *Applause for a great movie*
The thing that people forget, or in some cultures haven't come to understand yet, is that just because you're gay doesn't mean you can't carry on the blood line. It's all very new for some traditional families; but, the option is always still there.
Agreed with LightGE. There's no reason these days you can't have it all. You can find a Vietnamese egg donor and have biological children without having a wife if you feel it is important to carry on the blood line, all while having a boyfriend or husband.
Rumple Stilskin I agree with you completely. I personally think that the idea of "carrying on a blood line" is just silly old fashioned nonsense and holds no real value, but some people beg to differ (e.g. my grandfather, who, LOL, died while all of his biological grandsons expressed no interest in ever reproducing). At least for those silly people (and we all have our weird blinders), the option IS available, even if you're gay.
dfdxg Of course sweetheart. We're just campin' it up here for a few giggles is all. ;) We laugh at ourselves first, then others can laugh with us, ... instead of at us. ;)
I cried watching this short film and wanted to share my story. Maybe it might help many guys out there to stop from experiencing the pain I felt. I was in a 2 yr relationship with a Chinese guy. We were happy, worked things out and I felt we were heading to share a life together in Toronto, Canada. Then during March 2014, he went to Jilin, China to visit his family. I went to NJ to be with friends. The next thing I knew he wrote me saying he was made to marry a woman due to family and cultural pressures. I was devastated and coped with it by being with my friends (I don't have family here) and going on a trip to London and reading a self help book. This week, he returned my keys to my friend after many months. I am still heartbroken but know someday I will be happy again. My wish for all of you is to make sure that the guy you want to spend your life with is on the same page with you. And may that guy be brave enough to be who he really is and not what he thinks society is asking him to be. Live the truth that was given to you with your whole heart and soul. Bless all of you 🌹
Just a reminder that in asian culture homosexuality is not generally accepted and the wishes of the family are always the number one priority and in most cases the offspring bow to the family patriarch
As the writer of the film, I'm happy to share my intentions: the mother communicates regret for her past and hints it made her suicidal like the princess in the opera. "But I didn't do that." Her comments about moving on from tragedies was her way of saying she's come to terms with her choices. Then she tells her son she wants him to be happy and be true to himself. She is giving him her blessing to "be happy".
I enjoyed the film, but I have no idea what took place after the movie ended. While I understand leaving some things open to interpretation, I feel like there was no real closure, whatsoever, in this ending. Not even a strong enough hint. Art is subjective, but I think the author still needs to give the audience more to work with in suggesting where things will go next.
After watching this short film, I started thinking that maybe the theme might not be about the guy's decision about his marriage but to force us, the viewers, to reflect on our life decisions: our obligations and our wishes. If that's so, then I think the film did quite a nice job.
"The Golden Pin" is a film to be commended for it's acting, direction & sophisticated if straightforward filmmaking. Above all, this is a subtle treatment of an Asian American character dealing with his homosexuality. Some people may think there's nothing new to be said with coming-of-age/ coming out stories. I disagree, ethnicity, cultural specifics & individual perspectives on what's considered morally acceptable continue to replenish filmmakers & novelists with a myriad of textures to the necessary life journey for all gay men.
A agree with Steve Charters.... the mother was telling her son to follow his heart and the road to happiness. To live his live and love the one he truly loves. I really enjoyed this short fime and well made. I WOULD FOLOW MY HEART and be with the person I truly loved. I only wish more parents were as loving as this mother and only thinking about he son's happiness.
Thanks Mr. Lee, I used to admire the male physique of others until I realized that a beautiful male body could me accomplished by me, too. So I stopped idolizing other guys and focused on myself. I am no longer desperate for a bff like when I was a teenager. I believe in Serendipity, or finding love by happenstance, or by destiny, so I dont go out looking desperate. If it happens great, if not, less drama in my life. # DRAMA QUEENS SUCK !!!
I can never grow tire of these types of storylines. I love how it drags on and the main character has such a difficult choice to choose between love and obligation. I hope to watch the full length version. The mom's history has a nice way of adding history into the modern day dillemmas. Very well done!
Well said, Steve Charters. The creators of this piece not only tells a story, but truly allow viewers to be a part of the interaction by putting themselves/ourselves into the characters' situation, and thus sort of thrusts those hearts and minds into a what-if scenario. Awesome.
I can't wait to see the full length feature. That scene between Long and his mother was heartbreaking and so full of symbolism. Oh, and the lead actor is hot as Hell !!!
Passionate and sad short film with an almost "Romeo & Juliet" atmosphere to it. I have sympathy for people born into tradition bound families that choose their future spouses for them. Long like any other person should have been allowed to be with Ryan. A marriage arranged between two people who hardly even know or like each other is not really a happy true marriage. Vanessa is a beautiful young woman, but Long and Ryan truly belonged together. Sadly, love is like this unfortunately. As time goes on I am sure societies views and traditions on marriage (some if not all) will change and allow people to marry who they love.
I am so proud of Vietnamese...They have a really great film about a hot topic in the world, especially in Vietnam( the main character's country)...I just hope LGBT they will can get married...And no more discrimination....
Absolutely brilliant! Opposition to homosexuality in Asian cultures differs from that seen in western cultures in several key but subtle ways. This film touches on some of them. Attitudes do appear to be changing, albeit painfully slowly and primarily among those living in western cultures. The shackles of duty and family obligation have forced untold millions to deny themselves true happiness for centuries. And yes, I do speak from personal experience...
Texxi Mo There isn't one! This is like "The Lady or the Tiger" short story, from the last century, where the whole point is for YOU to decide how the character is going to decide.
the mom knows and supports her son. She gave him a powerful message that I believe he will follow. He needs to be brave though but he has the support of his mom to confront the very traditional dad...
A Family Bond is like life that one cherishes, Family is life itself as one sees it and values it. A touching story indeed, I can understand the complicated choice this guy is going through. Love for his Parents wishes or Love for a Man.....
Guess the penny hadn't dropped for this guy yet that he can have children whoever he's with. If the other guy'd told him from the beginning this film could've been one short dialogue long. Good diverse story and cast though, well done Matt Guerin & Cuong Ngo.
High quality acting and production for a short film! Mother was very dramatic and bit scary at some point and I loved it. This is a real struggle for many closet cases that feel an obligation and duty to their family and tradition to get married and have kids. I wish this was a movie with a good ending to it.
Could Kris Duangphung (the actor who plays Long) be any more handsome??? I think not!!! Well done short. Can't wait to see the full movie, hopefully with the same actors, if they are available.
I could become addicted to this short film. The story line is interesting and unique, the actors are wonderful (gosh, where did you find these HOT men?!? York University must really be blessed!!) and the juxtaposition of the cultures is intriguing. More, please...!!
Beautiful cinematography & lovely music. Storyline? Cliché. Seen it so many times. Hopefully they come up with something fresh in the full length movie.
It's interesting how you let the Vietnamese dialogue be so formal. The way the mother played her part was very reminiscent of the Vietnamese drama. It was great for a short film, but I think a full feature should have a more life-like portrayal.
Here's my thought on this because I am asian too and bi. I haven't told my parents because I'm in a dilemma almost situation. It hurts to know that I can't actually be with a guy no matter how much I am interested in them because my father is kind and helpful. My mother was can be nice at times. But the thing that most gets me is when my Dad and Mom wants me to get married to an asian women (specifically my culture). I love them so much but they're close-minded and grew up in a third world country. They're not open to the idea of gays and they'd like their children to have offsprings someday (us). It's even more difficult when you're the guy because you're seen as more tough, stronger and the need to be manly. Honestly there's a lot of things that I could say but it's a real problem that asians go through who are still in the closet.
It's because my Dad and Mom are kind to me at times that I feel as though I must be obedient and follow what they say. Almost like going against my will and thats what makes me sad.
Magnicifent Vi You already know what to do. You have it in you. You just have to have faith in yourself and what you feel. Well MagVi, I understand the Asian culture, perhaps that is why there are a lot of gay Asian men in North America, it provides the opportunity for more freedom. The western culture was like that years ago, but it has changed, that's not universal, but it has changed for the most part. You have a huge weight upon you and I do not envy you at all. Exactly. Very unsatisfying non-ending. A melting smile on his face or an awkward turn-away would at least have given us a clue as to what he intended to do … this stone-face, unreadable expression just leaves it completely unanswered and hanging. The swimmers lounging about in the water doesn’t seem to add anything to the story at all, either, other than complete randomness. I too would love to see this made into a feature film-preferably one that doesn’t end randomly! :-)
I loved this, it was beautifully and sensitively told. I like to have happy endings......so what happened in the end. The right thing to do is to love and be happy, however, the correct duty is to marry and produce males for the family - I understand this only too well..... xxx
WOW so beautiful & very touching. If only reality can be like this :( Well maybe for some but others maybe not so easy but this is a wonderful & beautiful clip xoxo :)
It's a relief to find out that I'm not the only viewer who finished watching with a blank stare, an empty mind, and a "What?" feeling. You are not alone. ;-)

Its been almost twenty years and I still love you. David Hang...
I am so sorry! Did you end up finding someone else?
it's cute
***** it is not so extreme as you paint it
no, not many
***** ...what about bisexuality?
it quite literally went from historical drama to swimming anime
lmaoooooooo

omg so true
Free! Was all I could think õ eve I saw the pool
I was thinking : OMG that's haru...xD omg omg..I need to find this man

Not sad but lie.
What a crazy ass drama queen mother.
I love her!
I guess we now know why the son turned out to be gay.
mysticoversoul that's not how it works, you don't "turn" gay XD
chloe heart With a mother like THAT you do! LOL
dfdxg Of course sweetheart. We're just campin' it up here for a few giggles is all. ;) We laugh at ourselves first, then others can laugh with us, ... instead of at us. ;)
James E. Ogilvy Well said (:
The asian guy is really very handsome.
hmmmmmmmmmmmmp
Good looking is more like it for me. Less than handsome but a notch more than regular looking.
Vietnamese traits, lol 😂😂
Nah I agree
12:27 "I want you to be happy...and I want you to stand up for what you believe". Mothers always know best. :)
I cried watching this short film and wanted to share my story. Maybe it might help many guys out there to stop from experiencing the pain I felt. I was in a 2 yr relationship with a Chinese guy. I am so sorry! this may have happened for a reason. The guy you are meant to be with is probably in your future :) Much love from the U.S. :)
O.M.G yeah sorry about that. People need to look at what they want and not other people or family even.

what a GREAT screenplay
"Love how it makes think of Free! and Makoto x Haru"
Omg you are so right.

Perhaps it's the new trend in movie-making: Let the viewers make their own ending AS they please.
I like to think that ended up together, white guy smiled at the Asian guy just before he dived in at thre end that was cute
YES I WANNA SEE WHO HE CHOSE

When the credits started showing up I got so upset and worried that was the end. I get the open ending but still...

All these guys in swimming trunks... the thirst is real lmfao
I can't wait to see the full length feature. That scene between Long and his mother was heartbreaking and so full of symbolism.
Oh, and the lead actor is hot as Hell !!!
This was a very pleasant surprise.😎
"...Stand up for what you believe..." That's a golden advice from a open-minded mother!!!😁😍😜
There is. Definitely straws of raw passion, and to combine it with hypothesis was absolute brilliance
I love this film. Made me shed tears of sorrow...
I'm from Vietnam. This is good.short film . Ilike it

left me hanging but a good short movie
One of the Best Gay Film ever.

this is one of the best mother characters i've ever seen.
I'm not sure what the ending was...
Texxi Mo There isn't one! This is like "The Lady or the Tiger" short story, from the last century, where the whole point is for YOU to decide how the character is going to decide.
It was free, you could choose their destiny wether long marries the girl or stays with him.
The music for this film has really added a lot to the film. Well done.
+Nick Doe....you are correct, the music/song is perfect for the film. I'm kind of addicted to the song...LOL
the mom knows and supports her son. She gave him a powerful message that I believe he will follow. He needs to be brave though but he has the support of his mom to confront the very traditional dad...
Yes, you need a full length of this gem. I hate ambiguous endings.
C'est un très beau film...très touchant...avec de beaux acteurs... merci
I can't believe you people, I honestly think this story is cute, and touching. :D
I went through the same experience in High School. So reminiscent it made me weep.
Thank you.
A Family Bond is like life that one cherishes, Family is life itself as one sees it and values it. A touching story indeed, I can understand the complicated choice this guy is going through. Love for his Parents wishes or Love for a Man.....
What a wonderful short ..... IT would be wonderful for a movie to be made out of this.
Good to hear friends around the world letting us know how they are doing.

Thank you, mattfg, for an incredible post. Most appreciated.
a short worth watching :) LOVE it :)
Every scene are beautiful! True story for many gay people tho.
it's was going so well, so beautifully conducted... until the end.
It's a very nice Short Film !! Cute Guys and a Beautiful Story !!
Beautiful...and painfully romantic...I so want to know what happens, what does he decide....
That kiss I'm the pool was hilarious

Beautifully made!
I love watching gay themed vietnamese films (since I'm Vietnamese too), because I can connect to it
the piano one was awesome!
What his mum said was very touching and emotional and quite inspireing3
Poignant is the word. What a fine film -- though I want to know how he resolves his dilemma . . .
The mom is awesome!
I hope they could make it into a feature film :) It's really promising.
the story could go either way - good acting - filmed beautifully - good luck
Beautiful cinematography & lovely music. Storyline? Cliché. Seen it so many times. Hopefully they come up with something fresh in the full length movie.
nice story, love the stories that leaves the comment to the viewers
This is a very nice movie, thank you for sharing.

So what happened between the two main characters? I hate being left in suspense! Ahh!😂😂. Nice film though!
,,this would be great film if ever,,,, ill be waiting for the longer version,,
ending is vague. point of realization was given but was not put into clearance on who he chose.
i like the way this film folds in the cultural elements. are they accurate? i suspect so. thx for capturing a rich feeling.
that was surprisingly well done.
I wish you the very best with this film and look forward to it becoming a feature. Beautifully filmed, very well acted and lovely story.
Best!

Really enjoyed this. Beautifully written and executed.

I love the story.

Really enjoyed Minh's performance and story of the classical opera.
Long is smokin' hawt! Good luck on the feature. I wanna see the rest. 8)
THE ASIAN GUY IS SIMPLY GORGEOUS!
Excellent, keep going on!
it was a beautiful and amazing short film...
Pretty good movie! Love the ending song!!!
WOW so beautiful & very touching. If only reality can be like this :(
Well maybe for some but others maybe not so easy but this is a wonderful & beautiful clip xoxo :)

lol love the mom her "creepiness" its the thing that is so appealing about her!
I agree another great film thanks
