    Cougars have been studied hunting Donkeys in Death Valley, and this unprecedented new dynamic led to a cascade effect not unlike the wolves of Yellow Stone. Coyotes also love hunting feral cats, so much so that when coyotes are in a area with feral cats, the cat population drops drastically. Desert wolves have also apparently been known to go after Gemsbok as well as other large invasive animals.

      Here in Kentucky coyotes are the invasive species. They do love cats though; people in Lexington were missing cats and small dogs so found out they had a problem with them. They are known to lure pet dogs with a female in heat. Sometimes they mate with the dog other times they just eat it.
      The coy-dogs (crossbred) are also a problem as they act more like coyotes than dogs.

      The cat thing is such a concern. Folk that let their cats out unsupervised, especially in coyote areas, are terrible pet owners. It's a catch 22 I suppose cause both coyotes and cats are major problems where they roam where they shouldn't.

Outdoor cats need to be stopped because of the damage they do and if some pet owners are too stupid to accept that their irresponsible ownership is resulting in their cat being turned into a coyotes dinner then that's on them not the coyote.

      @@jennylee9278Coyote are just filling a niche for large predators that wiping out wolves left open. They’re geographically relatively less out of place than real invasives and the ecosystem easily accommodates to their presence. If you want less coyotes though bring back wolves they’re the natural check to coyote populations.

    I’d like to add on cougars here. The sheer number of invasive large herbivores they’ve started to prey on is incredible. Gemsbok, zebras, Barbary sheep, nilgai, feral horses, feral hogs, they’re really something.

    • @Azureblue25
      @Azureblue25 8 месяцев назад +10

      Wait seriously? Zebras and Feral Horses? Are they hunting adults or young? If Cougars are taking down adult Zebras that’s pretty impressive in it’s own right, although it wouldn’t surprise me if they could take down a Zebra given that I’ve heard of them taking down adult bull elk and possibly even Moose, because I never hear about Leopards taking down adult Zebras, and Cougars and Leopards are pretty much the same size on average, but I’ve heard that Cougars can get bigger. Also where were Zebras introduced in the U.S.? I’ve heard of these other invasive species you mentioned being in certain parts of the U.S. but I haven’t heard of Zebras being introduced, although if I had to guess is it somewhere like Texas or New Mexico? Just asking out of curiosity.

    • @Azureblue25
      @Azureblue25 8 месяцев назад +9

      Update: just looked it up, I saw that wild Zebras are actually living in the San Simeon Grasslands of Central California, and there have been reports of Cougars successfully hunting young Zebras, but no reports as of yet for Cougars successfully hunting full grown Zebras though, but wouldn’t say it’s impossible for them. It was cool looking that up, I never even knew there were wild Zebras in California, they feel like a non-native species that’s surprisingly obscure when you put them next to the more well known non-native species in the U.S. like the Feral Hogs and Burmese Pythons, perhaps because the Zebras don’t get as much news coverage, the Zebra population numbers were 126 in 2020 but as of 2022 it went up to 151 and the population is believed to still be growing. Also I looked up the weights of Plains Zebras and Rocky Mountain Elk and it looks like the males for both species are actually pretty close in terms of weight, so yeah I’d say it’s totally possible for a Cougar to take down an adult male Zebra since they can down an adult bull elk, albeit realistically it’s an uncommon occurrence.

      A friend from college was walking along the C & O Canal trail with his wife and some friends. He came upon a rattle snake stretched out across the toe path with a chipmunk in its mouth, working it down its throat. He saw mothers with children and strollers up ahead on the path and wanted to pick up the snake and move it aside into the underbrush so that it wouldn't scare the families and so that it wouldn't be frightened or even hurt by the people coming along. He was pretty sure that it would be safe because the snake's mouth was full. His wife, a sensible woman, would not let him do it and made him move along. They simply warned the families with small children to stay away from that area of the toe path and reported their sight to the ranger when they got back from their hike.

They target non-native burros in the Mojavi desert, African and Asian antelopes like gemsboks, oryx, and nilgai in the southwest, barbary sheep in west Texas, non-native deer species in South America, and feral swine anywhere the two overlap like in Florida or the Pantanal.

    I live in Connecticut and I have seen a big change in the numbers of stray and/or roaming cats. Many feel that cats can take care of themselves. They cannot. If you care about your cat, keep it in the house. In the past 5 or 6 years coyotes have moved into the area. They enjoy eating cats. They are easy to catch compared to wild animals. There are no longer cats using my garden for their litter box. I haven't even seen a cat in at least 2 years. I do not hate cats. My husband and I had a wonderful cat for 19 years. He never went outside except when we took him to the vet for a yearly physical. He had all his shots for rabies, distemper, etc. Even though he never went out, he was still protected. The coyotes are here because there is a lot of game. It is nature's way of creating a balance.

    I live near a federal wildlife refuge, and a state refuge. The state used to supplement the deer during the winter until the cutback on funds! When the non-profit budgets got cut, we suddenly had Coyotes howling everywhere! After the deer population dwindled so did the Coyotes! Our tax dollars at work?😂😂
