    Guys I SO WISH I had known about this when I was in 2005-2010. I went in trying to be aircrew (I wanted to be hanging out the side of a helicopter layin’ down hate like I saw the guy do in full metal jacket), but after a long time waiting for a spot to open up for me to ship out, my recruiter met with me and told me that I didn’t qualify for aircrew because of my eyesight (which I later found out was a lie) so I needed to pick something else to do. I said “what’s my next best option?” He said “be a mechanic, you can maintain the helicopters and still catch rides on them when they move from place to place.” So I joined the Corps with a 6000 series MOS intent on working on hueys and cobras (I wanted to be close to the action), and lo and behold they stuck me with F/A-18’s. When I checked into the fleet I quickly realized that my job was gonna suck and the overall atmosphere of my command was just shitty and unmotivated. I stuck out like a sore thumb running a 290 PFT and making meritorious rank. Also, my unit had just returned from its last deployment to Iraq right before I checked in and the wing General made the decision to pull our aircraft out of combat operations rotation and only be used for training missions. Long story short, I was able to deploy twice, but not to combat, so unfortunately I was never able to participate in OIF or OEF, which really sucks now since both of those wars are over. Overall I’m proud of my service and I made E-5 in 5 years, but I realize now that had I known about MARSOC, I totally totally TOTALLY would have gone that route. Also, I would have STAYED IN because I actually enjoyed my job. I’m 34 now and it’s hard to believe that I would be starting my 17th year of service next month had I stayed in. The air wing is not the real Marine Corps and it has more in common with the Navy than it does the rest of the corps (at least on the F/A-18 side). Anyway, take a cautionary tale from me...if you like doing “Marine shit”, DON’T JOIN THE AIR WING cause you will be sorely disappointed!

    The more I learn about the different Special Operations forces, the more confused I get, while at the same time enlightened. It's like you have this map and what you know is visible, and what you don't is all black, but the name of the destination is visible. What I know: (all to an extent) SEALs, Green Berets, PJ, and Force Recon, Rangers. This video(and ones like them) shed some light on parts I have no clue about, but now I'm confused how they all fit together, and why the overlap(if there is an overlap), and how they all fit into the bigger picture. Like, Ive heard of the Marine Raiders, but I did not know how they fit into MARSOC, but now I'm confused with what Force Recon is in comparison.
    Unless you have already done it, I think a full length episode on US SOCOM pertaining to each SO group from each branch respectively would be pretty sweet.

    • @flyingdutchman7585
      @flyingdutchman7585 5 лет назад +2

      The issue is that each element, ie - Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines have their own specialized units (SEALS, Raiders, SF, CCT's, etc) that have their own missions specific to their branch. However, under JSOC or Joint Special Operations Command and other of these types of organizations they bring together the various units and they work together on a specific mission. For example, a CCT may be assigned to a joint Delta/Seal team to provide close air support during the operation. He has the right communications equipment and know how to talk with the AF support birds and since he is an elite operator, he can hang with the joint team and not slow them down or jeopardize the mission.

    • @copperjarhead
      @copperjarhead 5 лет назад +1

      Then more properly, a video of the SO groups of each branch separately rather than a full video. I know they work together at times. That aspect does not confuse me. Nether does the fact of why different branches have their own SO. It's the fact that they have multiple units(aside from Delta, or Team 6/DEVGRU(?)). More for my(and others) interests of knowledge on all things Military SO, rather than being someone who is confused and just don't/wont get it.

    • @bighands69
      @bighands69 4 года назад

      @@copperjarhead
      Each branch of the military is massive. Even the smaller elements like the USMC still have 200,000 troops.
      Each branch has it specialists to do certain jobs. Hence why their are Green Berets and Marine Raiders. They are going to be very similar because they exhibit the same unconventional space of warfare.
      You will find that SEAL's and Marsoc are very similar in their capabilities but then you will find that there are Rangers who can do the exact same job.
      It would not be possible to get Green Berets to go out and do the job for the Navy or Airforce. The resources required to do that would be insane.

    • @bighands69
      @bighands69 4 года назад

      Marsoc are members of SOCOM which means they are actually part of that command structure. Force Recon are an actual division in the USMC that are under the command of USMC.
      The Navy has SEAL's that come under SOCOM as well but they also have such groups as EOD that are specifically under Navy control.
      The key to all of this is that each branch gets to keep their own special operations force that they can rely on and are not at risk of being called away.
      Does this make sense?

      It's a tier 2 SOF unit in the United States Coast Guard that is on par with Navy Seals but specialize heavily in boarding ships & hand to hand combat next to have each team member fill in a specific role like marksman/recon etc. Plus they can legal board forgein boats without styartingf wars so the DOD uses them when needed to help the navy.

      What age are you?
      Marines have age limits for application. So does army and Airforce. Check to see which branch of the military appeals to you.
      All US Special Operations select within their respective branch. Also consider the national guard as their can be officer opportunities within that.

    they say a minimum 235 PFT score, but the physical hell you will go through in Raider training will require something closer to a 270 or better to have any realistic chance of getting through the training from from what I have been told and read about.

    • @bighands69
      @bighands69 4 года назад

      No score is going to prepare people for that. It really all comes down to the individual.

    • @shootingbricks8554
      @shootingbricks8554 3 года назад

      @@bighands69 not true. You never hear about Raiders, Recon, Scout Snipers, Drill Instructors or even newly commissioned officers getting a minimum of 235 on the CFT and PFT while preparing for and getting through selection.

      Reconnaissance History... Marines from 1st Force Reconnaissance Company and SEALs from Naval Special Warfare Task Unit One attached to the 13th MEU execute Maritime Interdiction Operations/Visit Board Search and Seizure (MIO/VBSS) on the Iraqi Oil Tanker Amuriyah in October 1990.
      The entire joint Force Recon/SEAL assault element was commanded by Admiral William H. McRaven (he would later command the DEVGRU assault of the Bin Laden Compound, but at the time of this mission he was a Lieutenant Commander). ADM McRaven chose the Force Recon Platoon as the lead assault element and his SEAL Platoon as the aerial QRF because “the best unit for the mission was the Marines, who were exceptionally well trained in close-quarters battle-the kind of skills we would need for this operation.”. A more detailed account of this mission is captured in ADM McRavens book ”Sea Stories”.
