      I did learn somewhere, that some peoples/cultures have up to 15 copies of the amylase gene, whereas others may have only a very few. Typically people from cultures historically dependant upon a high starch diet are those who've got that adaptation

      There is a genetic component. You can be predisposed but that doesn’t mean you will become obese. Genetics load the gun, diet and lifestyle pull the trigger.

    She's spot on, I gave up 90% of carbs, 8 months ago, had all those symptoms. All gone now, and lost 18 kilos , think I am gluten sensativ as well.

    Bloating and hunger even after a big meal are definitely issues for me.

      This is something I think lots of folks experience. How long after your meal are you hungry again? Hunger quickly after a meal could depend on what you're eating at the meal

    I've sorta known I have carb intolerance for close to 20 years. I tried the low fat diet that was supposed to help me, but the carbs kept putting pounds on. At 285 pounds and stopped breathing on the operating table, I made the decision to cut carbs. I lost 20 pounds in a few months watching my carbs.
    In the last 15 years I've lost 100 pounds. I'm going full keto, not for weight loss but for my Type 2 diabetes. I feel so much better when I limit carbs and blood sugar and weight get closer to where they need to be.

    i've struggled with carbohydrate intolerance, making daily life challenging. this video on the genetic aspect caught my eye. the explanation about the amylase enzyme and the amy1 gene provides clarity. realizing the connection between genetics and carb processing is intriguing. understanding this aspect of health has shed light on my own struggles. appreciate the informative content without complex jargon.

    Started keto seriously for the first time a week ago. Sleep and feel so much better. Havnt went #2 in a few days and am concerned. No pain and no bloating for some reason cuz I have 3 days of meat in me

    Great post, and very timely following the xmas excess. I often get bloated especially after bread or potatoes. I don't eat them often as it takes me three days to get over them. I do find that apple cider vinegar and lemon juice really help! Happy new year Kait!🎉

    So, yes! I love bread, all kinds, and more than any candy cake or cookie. And I usually regret it because of the way it makes me feel. This is my main thing to exclude since I restarted my new diet edit.

    Happy New Year 🎆 Kate.
    I’ve often wondered over the decades if carb intolerance was genetic. Surprised? Nope!
    There’s quite a few things mentioned in the video I could say that do apply to me..
    Feeling tired after eating rice 🍚 or other heavy starches. It doesn’t matter if it’s brown or white. Those are high on the glycemic index. That goes for other starchy carbs that are also considered high on the glycemic index. Anything made with flour I have to be careful too. Gluten and heavy lectins are poison. Just sayin’. I leave them alone. Rice makes me very sleepy 🥱. I don’t eat it very often for that very reason.
    Gas, bloating? Good Lord. I fall under that umbrella ☂️ too. I practice food combining which does alleviate the situation. Still, it’s best to leave the culprits alone. Eating a starch with a green vegetable does help. Oh and there’s betaine I have on hand when I feel I might need it.
    In essence, I do the animal proteins with green vegetables..cooked and raw.
    If I plan to eat starches (homemade popcorn 🍿 with avocado oil) I will eat them separately or with cucumber 🥒 … works wonders on my digestion.

    im five feet two inches and was 220 before watching your videos and eric berg's videos for low carb diet and now im 197 pounds and allot less bloated with much less gas.

    I had a DNA test and I have 3 Amylase. I am, according to my DNA, a slow carb metabolizer. It takes my body 8-9 hours to metabolize carbs. Normal person takes 45min-1 hour. So, I have the hunter gatherer genes with more emphasis on the hunter. Lactose, gluten and legume intolerant. Also, according to my DNA need to stay away from too much saturated fat.

    I am a metabolic mess after being on steroids on and off for 30 years after mold exposure. My naturopath started me on low carb/keto diet to lower my blood sugars, but I am insulin resistant and struggle to get my weight down even with keto. I think I am very sensitive to carbs. Gas, bloating, brain fog, joint pain, and fatigue are my daily challenge.

    Thank you for this video. I'm not great with carbs/starch but I'm not great without them either (fatigue). I allow myself one brown rice cake at every meal. This seems to work well for me but if I ever have 2 I know I've gone over my limit and i don't feel great. Thanks for all your helpful videos ❤

    Is there a test for this condition? If I have any carbs for breakfast or lunch I get - not just tired - but a total falling-over body fatigue where I can barely move a muscle. And I have episodes where I get RAVENOUS right after eating a meal (never before the meal), accompanied by brain fog, and nothing will sate that hunger. But my blood glucose is always normal. Of course my doctors won’t believe anything about my symptoms without a medical test; they keep saying I need more whole grains which just cause me to conk out.

    I might have _some_ carb intolerance. Starchy foods are staples in my culture (mainly rice) and I find that I f art way too often when I wasn't carnivore. Interesting..

    I dont produce much saliva let alone enzymes. I also was very malnourished last year scoring high 4out of 5. Anything from apples to bread to literally anything with carbs makes my mouth extrmeely dry. Im dehydrated too. But with gut issues higher carb fruits and veg is easier to tolerate than high fiber foods or healthy foods esp with extrmely high histamine levels. Higher than the highest histamine levels. I do need to lower glutamine/methionine too so too much meat is also problematic
    Any advice ?

    I didn't know...I don't believe I am though...I've switched to mostly protein and I do not seem to get these issues...I'm eating more protein. And taking Berberine now as I learned from this channel and I absolutely feel better still working on getting carbs down..everyday life doesn't make it ieasy...but really getting better next to no pop

    I love your knowledge and your videos question I have is. Do you offer coaching guidance as a response to doing some of the metabolic tests, such as the DUTCH + or an OAT test? I find that even a functional medicine provider here. Locally does not know how to incorporate the facets of the keto lifestyle and fasting into interpreting and addressing those results to then make a plan. So Kait, thank you. Hopefully it's something you do or you have a direction to point me in

    We been following you for so long but this time around you will be my daition (daytishan) for the whole 2024 Please do what you doing for us. I seems to be have big problem with carbs but life with out carb also seems imposible i try to cut a lot of carbs lost some kg but i am not sure if it is the right way and also some people even doctors say Honey is ok but not for me it intend get me bigger belley not sure what it is lastly i have a question what do you think about teff flour? i have done my reserch it seems ok feel good as well no blouting or anything else but i need to hear from you as well as professional. thank you🙏 Kait

    Hi kait nice video. I am a 38 yo guy 5'9 abt 140 lbs with bloating and gas . I have been wondering if its carb intolerance or insulin resistance or celiac disease. I am also having a very hard time gaining weight and also i'm tired of being bloated with kinda skinny arms and legs .
    Would taking amylase supplement help with carb intolerance?

    Last year I cut out carbs, including most fruits and vegetables and ALL my gas and bloating went away. I went from farting probably 40 times a day to farting maybe twice a day. I fell off the wagon a few months ago and started eating carbs again, and the bloating and farting came back. I’m really trying to get better about not having carbs because it really did make a difference.

    I find processed grains in flour in bread & pastry to be the worst, for me. I do ok with sourdough bread in moderate amount, Fruit on an empty stomach is a recipie for sleepiness. Chocolate seems less bad, but I think perhaps the fat content mitigates it's effect.

    So I can’t find an “AMY” of any kind on my genetic tests? It was a very comprehensive test done by The Ultra Wellness Clinics which is Dr. Hyman’s Clinic in MA, so can’t believe it isn’t a complete gene map. 🤷🏼‍♀️

    Speaking of undigested starch in the colon, this might lead to bacterial infections such as SIBO. I’ve had that chronically; it was extremely difficult to get it diagnosed the first time but that diagnosis was a godsend. However, I keep getting it treated but it keeps coming back. Could that be considered another symptom of carb intolerance?

      You're asking great questions! By definition, SIBO is Small Intestinal Bowel Overgrowth, so that's talking about undigested carbohydrates that get fermented in the small intestine rather than the colon. Glad you were able to get that diagnosed.
      Our body makes amylase, the enzyme that breaks down starch, both in the mouth (salivary glands) and the pancreas (releases it into the small intestine). By definition, the starch will be broken down well before it hits the colon.

    Im starting carnivore now due to my recent gut pain and issues. I've spend a lot of time during my 20s eating cheap processed carbs due to being poor and trying to save up to pay for school and what not. I found fish sauce to be a really good addition to carnivore and adding flavor but it definitely needs something to make it sweeter and cut the strong salty taste. Do anyone know if allulose is something is good on carnivore or is it off limits?

    Plant carbohydrates are superior to processed carbohydrates as they are filled with fiber. I think intolerance is a result of consuming processed carbs and no so much carbohydrates coming from leafy greens or avocado

      This has nothing to do with whole vs processed carbs. It’s the inability to break down starch, which can be in both.

      @@HealthCoachKait if this is the case then a person who has this it could be related to a the gut microbiome … most carbohydrate intolerance is usually related to lactose intolerance and people with celiac disease and etc. makes sense but I think it is more than just genetic there are other factors at play either way great video to target the symptoms of this …

      @@DaniellaJoyFitness carb intoelrance is different than lactose intolerance, celiac disease and issues with the gut. Those are all legitimate conditions but different from carb intolerance. Some people's genetics mean they produce less amalayse and therefore cannot digest carbs in high amounts.

      @@HealthCoachKait lactose is carb and is a type of carbohydrate intolerance - this I gathered from this quick search from a medical journal however, you are referring to people who struggle with producing amylase the enzyme responsible for digesting starch and therefore have trouble with digesting complex carbohydrates. Again, I understand the point you are getting across in the video.

      People who’s ancestors are from places where diets were traditionally more starch heavy have more AMY1 copies. If your ancestors are from a place that traditionally didn’t eat a lot of starch then you likely have less copies.

    Eating carbs after a workout and you’ll digest them and don’t forget to pair with protein. Also walk after ingesting. Carbs are wonderful and delish

    Is this common? I'm not sure if my symptoms are due to carb intolerance or something else. I have pcos and am highly insulin resistant.

      Hi there! low levels of the AMY1 gene (which scientifically means fewer copies of the gene or low Copy Number Variant of the gene) is found in some people, but to my knowledge, humans do not have 0 copies of this gene - meaning everyone has the ability to produce it to some degree.
      Regarding insulin resistance, there is actually a lot of research showing that insulin resistance is linked to low levels of the amylase enzyme. This might have nothing to do with the genetics of amylase, but more a functional decrease. It's a complex subject!
