Maria Filomena Ribeiro de Fonseca Gaspar, PhD, is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of the University of Coimbra. She was one of the speakers at the International Conference of Shared Parenting in Athens in 2023.
Her talk about the effects of long term high-conflict divorces explains how the brain is affected with serious consequences for the child, both mentally and physically - affecting social behaviors and learning abilities. She encourages politicians, communities and societies to put money into quality education, especially for early year teachers who may have a very positive impact on children suffering from toxic stress, if they are trained to do so.
Dr. Gaspar is a research investigator at the Centro de Estudos Sociais where she develops research activities in the context of parenting, parental burnout, parenting and coparenting education and family support, early childhood education and socioeducational intervention with children, youth and families. She has also served as a consultant of governmental entities (national and local level) and other entities (e.g. Foundation Calouste Gulbenkian), is a mentor/trainer in the Incredible Years Programs (parents and teachers), Parenting Wisely parenting programs, Children in Between and More Family parenting programs, and is a family therapist (Portuguese Society of Family Therapy).
