@@LawlyNawb I was making a joke due to the concept of the video. That said, signature gear is rarely what the artist actually used in the studio so I'm okay with them using something else. For a second I thought maybe Joey used that snare in the studio, but all I can find is that he sometimes used a Pearl Sensitone Steel.
I was thinking the same thing...lol. I use his signature snare, the one that has a metallic finish and is not black. I have used it for years. It is the greatest snare I have ever owned, and I own very nice custom snares. Why not just buy his signature snare, throw an emperor on there, and you’re golden...by the way. This snare sounds nothing like his snare, or even his OCDP snare.
Alfred Mandagi I mean you could buy Meinl Classics Extreme Metal Crashes and I personally would buy a Wuhan China but that was just a Personal Opinion. And A wuhan Ride. And a Maple Drum kit like a Pearl Decade or Something and you saved A LOT of money.
i think you nailed it with this one. people dont understand that this vid would be boring if you just used the signatures, kind of defeats the purpose of this series since its "sound *like*" and not "this is joeys kit." im surprised at how accurate this was especially if there wasnt mixing
the cymbals aren't quite there but the toms are great and the kick and snare is unbelievebly close. More BY bustning please! I would really like to see Jeff Porcaro of TOTO!
The funny thing is that Joey Jordison used a Pearl Export set with poplar shells (a cheaper wood choice) and Paiste Alpha cymbals (also cheaper compared to other pro cymbals), so you definitely don't have to break the bank to sound like Joey Jordison.
Paiste and Pearl made Jordison’s signature series that were budget friendly (paiste alpha, pearl export) but it didn’t mean he uses them for himself. You can look at pics and videos from the shows or record sessions. Good Marketing
@@mxm4928 Just because there are pics of him using different sets doesn't mean he never used them. Famous drummers are always swapping out their gear. I have indeed seen videos of JJ using his black alpha cymbals, and he also triggers his drums from time to time so honestly he doesn't need a fancy drum set anyway. Also just because he's an endorsee of those companies doesn't mean they can slap his name on anything they want. I'm sure at the very least JJ's quality approval was necessary for them to make them. You can't really call something "signature" without the artist using it for at least a short time.
As far as I know dave used Zildjian, Tama, and Yamaha for the only two full studio records he was in (Nevermind & In Utero) On Nevermind I beleive he used a Yamaha maple kit 24x16, 12x15, 16x18, with a 8x14 snare. With Zildjian 18 and 20 A rock crashes, 15 inch A rock hihats, and a 22 inch A rock ride. I beleive he used the same size drums but instead they were Tamas, with the exception of the air tom, he used a 14×15 I believe. Also it sounds like he is using the same size cymbals on In Utero but instead they may have been A mediums, or K Zildjians as they sound darker.
Sorry the second setup, the tama setup, i meant to say that was his In Utero kit. He as also used a 24 inch ride live. He has pretty much been a Zildjian guy his whole life, with the exception of his Probot and some queens of the stoneage era performances where he used Tama and Paiste.
You guys were pretty spot on. The bell on that ride was IT!! I believe he was playing paiste rude. Not sure how they differ from your choices. But in all, well done guys!!
Need a 9 piece Pearl export. Snare cranked, Iron Cobras, dark Paiste cymbals, 3 rack Tom's, 2 floor Tom's, for the 99-2000 Joey sound. 2 bass drums for that amazing Iowa drum sound. He also used drum rings back in the day. Also slacking on those famous Tom fills! I remember sitting in my room playing self titled/iowa and just killing those fills (before playing extreme metal I was heavy into rush) so those tom fills were very important to execute!
Absolutely blown away by these videos. You two are doing an excellent job. This is the most entertained I've been watching drum related content on RUclips.
I have these Paiste Dark Energy hats they're like nothing else I've ever played. Haven't seen them around. Anyone know em ? Sometimes use a scalloped paiste sound edge on TOP with the dark bottom. Its quite insane.
I've been listening to Slipknot since 2004 and this sounded just like Joey's kit... The only thing that wasn't quite similar was the ride... He plays a "pingier" ride. Amazing job!
At first I was thinking about the same, but just the pedal was trying to go away hahaha, just the kick pedal was not seted correctly, If the minimum if you're going to play metal
Joey has a very interesting playing style ive not seen anyone else use or perfectly emulate. Its most entire arm and leg motion and its very quick. One the hit is made he cuts off the momentum to keep going down and starts the motion back up for the next swing. Basically he does lightning fast full strokes.
I’m a drummer and I don’t know why everyone is bitching, this sounds like his self-titled kit. Cymbal tone is on point as well. Also, this is pre-processing and sound replacement. The kick drum sounds spot on. For a good idea of his “natural” drum tone listen to the digi-pack release of the self-titled where they played surfacing live.

How do you not have a Pearl double pedal 😂 Also the black cymbals JJ had were customs, not actual black 900’s that the public has available. They coated mostly Rudes, Signatures and 2002’s in black for him. Pretty dope.
