    Some things you guys have taught me in response to this video that I want to highlight:
    -The dangers of teflon non-stick pans, especially over the high heat of an open fire. Had "Dark Waters" recommended to me on Netflix and that was a very worthwhile watch.
    -Alcohol fuels shouldn't be stored in this MSR fuel bottle because it's lined with aluminum and methanol with corrode it. Need to use a plastic bottle.
    -I knew methanol was highly toxic to ingest (as far as I know it's safe once combusted) but it can be absorbed by the skin so watch out

    • @MrHogadog
      @MrHogadog 2 года назад

      That's right. It's best to avoid pfas non stick and any plastic too if you can. Try avoid eating or drinking anything out of them, especially when heated. And avoid spraying deet near food too. They all have chemicals that cause health problems in the user and any future offspring. I would like to stick to stainless, wood and cast iron. Stuff people have been using for millennia.

    Jon! Thanks for doing these kinds of videos still! I know they may not get as many views as other videos but it's still very much appreciated!
    I watch all your couch vids, they're super helpful and a good change of pace from the regular content on the channel. (camera gear, packing, food, etc etc.)
    It really sucks backpackers, campers, bushcrafters, etc. have to depend heavily on what kind of content they post in order to reach a larger audience. I still appreciate the effort though.
    Also, still growing relatively fast! 3 million views on that one video (mind boggling). Noticed some hate too, it's ridiculous lol.
    I saw a guy try to argue with YOU about your ethics and environmental footprint. Which is just hilarious honestly. You're like one of the few campers I see, go out of their way to record picking up trash and ridiculing the ones who leave areas worse than they found them.
    ANYWAY, been binging your older content (2017/18/19) and it's still just as good man. Just got through the 95 Days in the wild series, very good. :)
    Temagami, Quetico and the Pukaskwa videos are my favorites still! Some criminally underrated videos on this channel forsure.

Have you ever thought about using a collapsible stove like the Firebox? Would save quite a bit of bulk in canoe trips.

    Looks good and well thought out! Changing over the the use of an alcohol stove in conjunction with a pot cozy was a game changer for me. I use yellow Heet fuel, and find that 1.5 ounces of fuel works for most of my meals (with a 'cat stove') - 5 minutes to bring to a bring the water to a boil, and then 2-3 minutes of boiling the meal before the fuel is consumed. This is for completely dehydrated meals that produce 1.75 -2.5 cups reconstituted meals. I have better luck using old fashioned aluminum pots because they hold the heat better than titanium and the meals stay much hotter in the cozy.

    • @LostLakes
      @LostLakes  2 года назад

      Watch out for Heet fumes, rumor is the Heet has some bad stuff in the smoke. I've been using the cheapest grain alcohol you can get at the liquor store. Supposed to burn the cleanest, and you can drink it if your truly desperate.

    Great choice of gear John. Very informative. The only thing I would mention is to bite the bullet and buy a proper alcohol dispenser msr makes a good one. I’ve seen personally guys get seriously burned by dispensing out of a large opening on a white gas container because the trangia wasn’t completely out Be very careful.

    Hey Jon, been watching a ton of your videos and you have inspired this car camper to get out and try some canoe camping. Had a few questions…
    -Do you hang your cooking gear at night due to any residual scents that may be on them?
    -I think you use the MEC slogg canoe pack. How many separate dry bags do you have within, and what do they contain?
    -any thoughts on hanging food/scented items in a dry bag as opposed to a bucket?
    -Do you treat your clothes to prevent ticks? Do you take any other tick precaution’s
    If you ever want to do an “experienced canoe camper vs a newbie” video, I know a guy who could be the newbie 😆
    Thanks and take care

    • @LostLakes
      @LostLakes  Год назад +1

      Right on :)
      -I don't here, in northern ON because bears are wild and rarely habituated, and hanging limbs are very hard to find in the boreal forest, but in a busier park one should
      -Yep I use and love the slogg HD. Just a couple dry bags within, one for clothing and one for some electronics and my book, and non-dry bags for various other things (I did a full breakdown of my kit in spring 2021 which may help)
      -Also a good idea depending where you are
      -I don't use any bug chemicals (permethrin, DEET), but I might if I spent a lot of time around ticks with the Lyme risk. For mosquitoes and black flies I just cover my skin with long sleeves and pants all season
      -Hahah thanks newbie :)
      Hope this helps!

    Hey John,
    I had the same concerns regarding the coating frying pans so I went with the Firebox Stove fry pan and there's no going back now. It's a hardened anodized aluminum and it's seasons the same way as cast iron. You should check those out for sure. Very intuitive engineering gone into all of his products. 🤙🏻

    Have you ever used complete trangia stove system? The burner and base with wind screen are impressive + kettle for boiling water. Pots and pans you want to use really don’t matter. I’ve messed with many spirit burner’s and haven’t found a better mouse trap, but I’ve had lots of fun trying.

    The Trangia fuel bottles used to be available in Canada but they disappeared from stores a few years ago. I contacted the Canadian distributor and was told that this is because the safety valve does not meet Health Canada regulations. Strange, but true. Those Trangia bottles are pretty secure and well-designed. They certainly seem more robust than the methyl hydrate containers found in hardware stores to this day, which have no safety valve whatsoever.

    Trangia...the sound of nature, not gas jets! I use the #25 Trangia with a cozy that holds it all. Sometimes I think I'll take a mini-stove it ends up the same size as the Trangia, after I gather up pots & pans, and other utensils. Best fuel is liquid de-natured alcohol like blue fondue fuel. No soot and minimal CO. Methyl Hydrate can be absorbed thru skin and burns too aggressively. I miss your old one pot/one pan kit!

    • @LostLakes
      @LostLakes  2 года назад

      Great points SSD! The only fondue fuel in town is gelled unfortunately (and much more expensive than the methyl hydrate), but I would prefer it if I could find it for a decent price, especially for the skin absorption issue. Where do you get it?

  • @patrickmcadams7996

    The coatings can contain PFAS, which is a rising contaminant in the environmental consulting world. There are a lot of things that contain them and non-stick coatings are one of the big ones. You can buy pots with non-PFAS containing coatings, or just go non-coated. But would be worth it to switch, especially if you start seeing scratches in the non-stick coating of the pan.

    Nice little kit. Compact is key. Have you ever seen a tin can stove? There are many sizes you can make it, it's very easy. VERY light weight, takes up very little space and not much smoke if any all. I made one with a a but taller can to slide over the one with hole in the top so you can rest a pot or kettle on it. Last forever, I've had the same one for years, it always lights for me. I had one that was an old coffee can size, can cook on a pan with it. Cheap, affective, long lasting, light weight. Love the videos guys, your getting good views as of late. Good job. I hope it pays well for yas. Sorry for writing the story. Just an idea. ;)

    I like your cook set review particularly the DIY cozy. I'll have to try it out since in colder weather re-hydrating wastes a lot a fuel and can over cook some foods if you use the flame to much. @@LostLakes Yep … the actual danger from an alcohol stove is probably non-existent so long as you don’t knock it over while cooking, but they’re still illegal under fire ban conditions in Ontario. I’ve gone with white gas/naphtha so that I’m at least not using disposable propane cans - I hate them as much as you do. It’s noisy, but it does the job.
