- An unboxing and review of the Sea-Monkeys Explor-A-Sub kit.
The sea monkey explorasub was released by Exploratoy in 2001. This tank came out at a similar time to the Magic Castle & Mars tanks, as well as the popular Nasa Space Shuttle. It's an unusual submarine shaped tank that has built in internal lights and sound effects. In this video I give some history of the tank, show how to set it up, and also give my final review and thoughts.

Congrats to @Nerdsterstein for winning the giveaway for this video 🥳
Nice hope they enjoy there sea monkey tank also first
picocosmos can you try get your friend to help me to get the sub i really badly want it for years now but can never find it.
I couldn’t have raised my sea monkeys to the second generation without you, thanks man!
So great to hear you’re having success with you tank! Good job 🙌
Hi man, are you using some kind of light or just natural light to grow it?
Second generational sea monkeys is a good band name.
Skill issue
I lost motivation to raise Sea monkeys after one of my dogs knocked over my tank a few years ago. But watching your videos has definitely relit the spark and the love I have for these little creatures! Thank you so much for that. I used to love raising these little babies - and you've taught me a lot of great tips to help getting back in to it even better than it was before for me! I look forward to getting my first tank in so long soon. I hope to keep you updated on my reentry into the Sea Monkey world!
🙌 welcome back to the community! Good luck raising them this time around :))
U Should Put The SeaMonkeys In A Hihger Place
To think this sub is as old as I am. Your videos never cease to amaze and the aesthetic of the tank is amazing!
That’s so cool! I love that there are people watching these videos who are younger than the products themselves. Glad to hear you’re enjoying the videos :) good luck for the giveaway!
Always love seeing your videos pop up. I never knew there was so much to Sea Monkey lore!
Mate I’m not even halfway through all the different tanks yet 😅 still have sooo many more videos to make. I’ll get there eventually 🙃
@@pico-cosmos Wait there's gonna be more tank videos yayy
Yup! Probably around 10 more 😅
In a year or two, the grandkids will be at the age where Sea Monkeys will be exciting. I appreciate all the tips and reviews. I hope there are some good novelty tanks out by then!
even when it's just a review there's always something in there that's helpful and I'm glad there's someone covering this kind of thing. these creatures are so fascinating it's cool to get to see them in a way that you show us so that we can do it too.
thanks for the upload man can't wait to see what you got next!
Thanks :) glad you enjoyed this video. Will have more coming out soon
Thats a really cool tank. I grew up in the 90s and I never saw that tank in stores. I saw plenty of the regular tanks and kit refills. So I know sea monkey products came to my town. But never any of the cool stuff you show on your channel.
I don’t remember ever seeing this one in stores as a kid either. We usually just had the Ocean Zoo tanks here in NZ. It’s fun being able to finally test these out now though :)
@@pico-cosmos Yeah I never wouldve thought they made as many products as they have if I hadnt come across this channel. Its quite interesting to see all the stuff they tried over the years. I think some of their tanks like the mars colony and magic castle couldve benefited from being made larger. While watching this video I was thinking how the submarine could be improved one way being having little props on the inside like seats and other stuff so the algae would have something to cling to and grow while still keeping with the submarine theme. It would also probably benefit from being made a larger size as well so there would be more room for ventilation at the top. Obviously theres no way to make this design perfect but it certainly can be improved.
Always appreciate how you go over all aspects of a given tank, like not only the packaging and pack-in material, but also how it actually works as a tank and how it works/doesn't work with additional stuff you might want to add, like heaters and air pumps, etc. Can tell you really love this stuff, and it's got me thinking about those considerations too while I'm looking to set up my first colony as well. Good stuff 👍
Glad to hear you’re enjoying the videos :) I’d highly recommend going with the Ocean Volcano for your first tank, it’s not the most exciting design, but it’s great for algae growth and adding in accessories 👍
i really like this video! i dont personally own sea monkeys ( haven’t and likely never will sadly ) but these videos are so nice to watch and the tanks are so interesting
keep up the work, cant wait for more videos
Thanks! I hope you’re able to somewhat live vicariously through these videos :) These tanks can be kinda difficult to find these days, so part of the reason I make them is so others can experience these old tanks too :)
@@pico-cosmos yeah i do !
im just really interested in the aesthetics of these tanks, just excites me whenever i see them :)
Cool. Nice of you to keep the Sea Monkeys love/lore alive.
Hopefully the hobby continues to grow back to its former popularity 🙌
@@pico-cosmosI’m new here to it thx to RUclips recommendations on your videos😂 made me want to try some for the first time. As a kid my father always said no to em
Thx, you helped me grow my first sea monkeys
Nice! How long have you had them for?
@@pico-cosmos a few months I watched your tutorial ages ago
I've discovered this channel as a 3am RUclips bing watching session. It's quite calming and I've watched most your videos. Love your content
Haha love that! Glad to hear you’re enjoying them :)
I love watching these! I always love when someone is passionate about a certain topic, I eat these videos right up! Thank you for making them :D
No problem :)) glad you’re enjoying them
I've always wanted one of these as a kid! And now I can't stop watching your channel about them! Thanks for the new and cool info about these cute little guys
I’m glad you can live vicariously through these videos :) you should try raising them yourself one day!
These novelty tanks are so cool! I never even knew these types existed. I love watching your videos and learning about Sea Monkeys.
I always think I know about all of the different tanks and then I randomly stumble across new ones that I’ve never heard of 😅 my list of novelty tank video reviews seems to be endless 🙃
A couple of years ago I tried out sea monkeys and failed but since I found you channel a few months ago, you given me a lot of tips and tricks so whenever I get another tank, I can keep them alive. Keep up the great content!
Thanks! And good luck for next time you try them :)
This tank was so pretty, sucks it didn’t work out. I wonder if they couldn’t figure out a way to make substrate look nice and make sense. A little submarine control panel might’ve looked cool but even frosting the bottom would’ve been better than nothing. If you wanted to use it as a display for a few hours, like the necklace, it would be so cool to see different colored sea monkeys swimming through the rings.
Can’t wait to see the tank mates video 💛
Yeah I think they should’ve just gone for a substrate similar to the Ocean Zoo tank. It might’ve been a little out of place but I don’t think it would be all that visible in the tank anyway
I'm honestly shocked they resisted the urge to put magnifying bubbles on it 😅
😂😂 I didn’t even think about that! Thank god they left them off this one
Ever since I came across your channel trying to revive my childhood memories, I always look forward to your uploads. New content and tips for this time is much appreciated, so I can correct the things that I have done wrong when I was younger.
I really love how the details, like how you film, present, and edit the videos, really capture the audience. Nice.
Your videos have gotten me back to the hobby after over 20 years! Thank you so much, and I look forward to all your future videos.
P.S. The 2nd button's "train sound" is actually the alert/tone that plays on some older submarines that alert the crew as they dive under the ocean. :) Just thought I'd share.
That’s so great to hear! And thanks for that info, I had no idea. I’ll have to look it up to see if I can find a recording of that sound online, super interesting 👌
@@pico-cosmos ruclips.net/video/IharGlnc4Ww/видео.html
Well … having never opened mine it was great to finally see it in action. Thank you for that. And it does look cool. Agree, impractical to use but cool looking tank. $50.00 is an amazing price considering today’s market. Great buy, John. It does seem pretty closed off from access to air. Curious, is there a fill line for filling the correct amount of water? It looks like it would hold more than the standard 10 to 12 ounces. 👍👍👍
I actually bought this about a year ago when the market wasn’t quite so crazy, but I remember thinking it was a steal even back then. No fill line on this tank, but I think it does take around 12oz of water. Glad to finally have this video ticked off ✅
@@pico-cosmos it turned out great. I hope it performs well for you also. Amazing how the market has changed over the past year or so.
Another fantastic and chill experience, love your videos keep up the great work!
Loved sea-monkeys as a kid and getting back into the hobby. Your videos are such a treat and have tons of super helpful information, thanks so much and keep up the great work, I know I'll be watching. Cheers!
I became quote obsessed with sea monkeys the last few months and I've loved watching your videos! Can't wait for more 💜💜
Nice! Do you have a Sea-Monkey colony of your own?
@@pico-cosmos yes I do! I have a small colony that's a few months old, and have just started a new one in a sea monkeys on mars I bought recently!
Discovered this Chanel on a whim and have been in love with it ever since great education and great atmosphere:) absolutely love your vids man keep up the great work:)
Thanks! I really appreciate that :)
Hello! I've always wanted to see more about the Sea-Monkey Explor-A-Sub, and actually seeing it up close. So this video was great and also a great review of the tank. I've only really seen this tank, in some other peoples videos, on their shelves in the background. So thanks again for featuring this one! It is a very unique tank you are right. Your videos are amazing and the quality is always the best. Thanks for posting these videos! Cheers! 😊
Glad you enjoyed the video mate :) I hope this one helped you to experience the Explor-A-Sub in some way
Great video! I got back into Sea-Monkeys recently, and you have been a great resource for tips and different items to use. I just set up two volcano tanks with air stones and the USB heaters you recommend.
Nice 👌 that’s my favourite combo, absolutely love the Ocean Volcano tanks. I’ll be doing a review of them later this year when the new packaging comes out
Awesome video, thank you so much for all the effort you put into them, it really makes watching extra nice. On the other hand, if were not because of you i would not know such a nice tank exists, it really looks cool and the sea monkeys really seemed to be happy to live there :3
Love your videos, love learning about these creatures, and their lore. Never had the chance to raise them but after watching so many of your videos I'd love to try. Keep up the awesome videos :)
I found this channel randomly and i love the world of these tiny creatures and their novelty items :)
🥳 welcome to the community :) glad to hear you’ve been enjoying the videos
@@pico-cosmos Sea monkeys are my favorite weird animal
I remember when I was a kid , my aunt bought me a sea monkey kit. They’re cool little dudes.
It’s really great that I get to see these in use because none of the speciality tanks were available to me! ❤
I never saw this one as a kid either. Was fun to finally get to try it out :)
@@pico-cosmos I am really considering starting on my own - have you seen any difference between the growth of the eggs from the original sellers as compared to the new ones? I see online that you can get the original ones shipped to you from the website, not sure if they are still doing it though
Doesn’t make a difference really, all Sea-Monkeys are pretty much the same
Thanks Jon for another fun review. I’m really enjoying my Sea-Monkeys on Mars and I am grateful to have found your channel.
Growing up I never got them to grow. Now I’m excited to get a kit and try again!
Make sure to watch my video titled “how to keep your sea-monkeys alive” before starting :)
These videos have brought back some of that curious joy I used to have when I was a small child taking care of my own sea monkeys.
Amazing video as always, cool unboxing of a very unique tank 👋
Just finished bingeing your channel a couple days ago lol impeccable timing 🙏
Haha glad to hear you’ve been enjoying the videos! Will have more coming out soon 🙌
That is a cool tank, its on my wish list. Great video about it, you really show some of the downfalls of the design. You and the SMD have taught me so much. I have had Sea-Monkeys on and off since I was little, but I think the information I am getting will keep them alive. "Tanks" for doing these!
Cheers Larry! Ah yeah I love Jon’s videos! Some of the best Sea-Monkey content on RUclips. Thanks for supporting the channel :)
Great video as usual! You’re always so lucky getting vintage sets at great prices 😁👍🏽
Haha sometimes.. other time I probably pay way too much 😅 though prices are kinda insane at the moment
@@pico-cosmos RIGHT?!!! $200+ for a Pirate Treasure set on eBay? Like come on!
An opened watch recently sold for over $600 and I saw a Night Life Gems kit go for $420. It’s mental
@@pico-cosmos RIGHT?! 🤦🏻♂️ I hope they go down at some point. Or I get as lucky as you do 😂 In the meantime I’ll live vicariously through your videos lol.
Great review. Wish more unique tank designs like this would be released.
Me too! The problem is that most retailers don’t want to stock more than 2 different tank options, so there’s not much incentive for the company to invest in designing new tanks. I think the only way it’ll happen will be if online sales start to out perform in-store sales
Man im so glad this channel exists. I used to think being into these things were stupid, but im happy to see theres plenty of people that like them. And thanks to you, Im going to get my own collection setup :)
🙌 the hobby has been growing a lot recently, so it’s a good time to get into it :)
I just stumbled across your videos one night. And I love them I've learned so much from your videos
I stumbled on this video at random, and I can't stop watching! 😊
I've learned a whole bunch from this channel. I also love history so it's pretty cool to also learn that side of Sea Monkeys.
im so glad i found this channel!! feeling very prepared to get started and even looking at getting the mars novelty kit 💪😤
Love the Mars tank 👍 it’s a great design
This is awesome. Channels like this are what RUclips was made for.
What an unusual and delightful little tank design. Always look forward to these videos!
Your videos inspired me to order my first Sea Monkeys tank yesterday. I also ordered an air pump and a mini heater, thanks to your tips. I can't wait for them to arrive. God bless.
👍 that heater & air pump will help a lot. Good luck with your new pets :)
@@pico-cosmos Thank you.

Just sent the link to your videos to my momma she was going to get some after we sent her pictures of ours. nostalgia! I think she will appreciate your videos too!
Brand new subscriber... loving these videos and seriously thinking about getting my own tank!

Hi I just recently subbed and I'm already loving your vids. Keep making them to entertain ppl like me!
Thanks for supporting the channel :)
Thank you again for a great review!
Just started my very own tank Your videos help out a lot.
Love watching!!
🥳 good luck with your new Sea-Monkeys :)
this is probably one of my fav tanks ever! I love the the fact that it can make noises and the way to aerate the tank
Keep an eye out on ebay! They come up for sale every few months or so
I just LOVE seeing someone into Sea Monkeys as much as I am
🙌 glad I’m not the only one who’s obsessed lol
I had a 1 year old seamonkey colony until I knocked the tank over but you have reignited my interest in the hobby so far I have my most recent colony for about a month and with following your tips they are very happy
🙌 glad to hear that
Awesome video again, without these videos I don’t think I could have kept my 2 tanks going. 👌🏼. With the sub tank I agree, not keen on the shape but it’s pretty cool I guess, would definately still go with a mars or magic castle tank.
Always a good day to see some new content from ya!~
🙏
Great review of a very unusual tank. Your tips and advice are a massive help and so far following your advice the sea monkeys are doing well. Keep up the good work.
🙌 glad to hear that
Such a unique tank design, thanks from the review!
Having recently discovered your channel John (and subscribed) I have been fascinated by 'Sea Monkeys'. Thank you for easy to understand videos. I have ordered an air pump, and mini heater. Need to decide now on an SM tank. Volcano one looks ok.
Cheers again and I am looking forward to more content !!!!!
The volcano is definitely the most practical option 👌 it’s a great tank to start with. Good luck!!
HeyI absolutely love your videos so glad we can finally see what you look like !!!💖💖💖💖💖
I always learn something from these videos! And entertaining too.
I love the built in extras on this tank. We need more light up tanks.
Definitely agree! Though I prefer the idea of having the light be USB powered rather than with batteries. Would make a nice ambient bedroom light
yo i just started my sea monkey tank a few days ago using all your tips, amd the amount of eggs that hatched is insane thank you sm!!! im considering getting another tank so they arent overcrowded
🙌 good job! A high hatch rate is a sign of good tank conditions. Good luck with raising your new colony and let me know if you ever have any questions :)
@@pico-cosmos thank you so much!!:)
This is the first video of yours I've seen and I'm an instant subscriber. I've tried to grow brine shrimp as feeders before but failed miserably, but this is making me want to try again, not as feeders since I no longer have my fish tank, but just by themselves. I've always been fascinated by them but I was never allowed to have them growing up. As a disabled adult it would be fascinating to keep them just as a pet since I imagine the maintenance is a lot less than a 5 gallon. I think I might go and find the space shuttle video you referenced in this one, I didn't realize there was a variety of enclosures other than the basic square ones. Thank you for sparking this interest in me again!
🤗 welcome to the community. There have been a whole lot of novelty tank designs over the years, I’m planning to make video reviews for each of the main ones, and I still have a lot to go! I’d highly recommend watching my video titled “how to keep your sea-monkeys alive” for my best tips on raising them :)
@@pico-cosmos Thank you so much! I've binged a few of your videos since I posted this comment and I enjoy the content. Next time I have some money to spare I might get myself a new starter kit. I'm looking forward to more reviews of novelty tanks!
You’re channel is a blessing. Thank you
Thanks! 🙏😊
these videos are always so entertaining and educational :)
although my inner collector hurts a little watching you open these rare tanks, its amazing that you are able to share these cool tanks with those who would not otherwise have a chance to see them. Keep it up!
Haha yeah I think a few people feel like that, though I figure a lot more people will get to experience them if I make these videos. Especially now since the prices for this stuff has sky rocketed
What a nice review thank you for sharing.
your videos are always a blast to watch
Masterpiece of production and edition!
Thanks 🙏 I’m slowing getting better at editing. Still have a lot to learn but I’m trying to improve with every video
I’ll be honest, as a kid I never cared too much about sea monkeys. I didn’t even understand how they worked.
I am just absolutely fascinated with them and these videos now!
My roommate has a 50gal tank that mostly inhabit little white shrimp, and I catch myself at times just staring at them with fascination for almost an hour at a time.
Keep up the good work :)
They really are fascinating animals! I think they just get overlooked because they’re treated as fish food, but really I think they’re much more interesting than fish 😂
Hey! You've won the giveaway for this video :) Can you send me a message on IG?
Nice video.
I just recently started thinking about sea monkeys again after nearly 30 years.
This the most relaxing and best channel on youtube... Im so glad I just found it
🙏
Can't believe how many different sets there are!
They’re never ending I swear
Im getting better and better at keeping brine shrimp thanks to you and again another awesome kit with tge double spoon!!
I really enjoy your content. Great vintage products and knowledge of sea monkeys. I originally brought mine in the 80s from Matchrite Joke Shop by post in the UK. Finding your videos has brought back so many memories and you are inspiring me to want to revisit my childhood, nurturing a new colony of sea monkeys. Thank so much for all the work you put into these videos.Finding
Thanks! I’m really glad to hear you’re enjoying the videos. You should definitely start up a Sea-Monkey colony! Let me know if you ever have any questions about raising them :)
@@pico-cosmos I like the idea of getting the mini heater and pump for the tank, does this work better with Ocean Zoo or the Volcano / Treasure Trove kits?
Yeah, the Ocean volcano & ocean zoo are ideal for adding accessories 👌 volcano is my personal favourite
I love your vids! Keep it up
I used to play with these toys when i was very young but it would be cool to try it again with all your helpful tips it looks like fun
You totally should! It’s not too difficult to raise them if you get the water parameters right
Great review as always!
Thanks Martha :)
Hey man, great stuff! Love the content! You are the Sea Monkey saint!
Haha thank you! Glad to hear you’re enjoying the videos
Love these sea monkey videos. Thank you.
this is awesome! i love ur content!
The built in million bubble pump is a great idea. I wish sea monkeys or even a competitor would develop a spill proof tank with a rubber aeration primer button.
You inspired me, and now I’m planning on starting a colony of Sea Monkeys in a mason jar with the new starter kit! Thank you for introducing me to these fascinating little creatures!
Ah that’s awesome! I’ve never tried raising them in a jar before but it’s a cool idea. Good luck with your new pets!
I was wondering where you went since your last video! Been checking almost daily to see if I had missed out on new ones! Love the design of the sub! Wish they had an anniversary re-release or something!
Thanks man I trust started Watching you And I'm getting expired to start my own colony They look pretty cool Keep up the good work man
Always learning from these videos!
Thanks! Glad you’re enjoying them :)
I'm glad you're making videos of these rare tanks. Makes me wonder if we'll ever see similar products on shelves again.
Probably not for a while tbh. As far as I’m aware there aren’t any plans at the moment for new novelty tanks :/
sea monkeys are a bit of an obscure interest nowadays im so glad you make such high quality videos about them!!!
your videos are great. I had sea monkeys when i was a kid. thanks to you videos i am inspired now to try it again
i vividly remember having off brand eastern european sea monkeys as a kid, and they never hatched. your videos are informative, and comforting, as well as making me consider giving sea monkeys another go!
Do you remember what the european ones were called?
Yeah, not a fan of this tank design but the aerator pipette was pretty useful. I keep thinking about keeping sea monkeys but the price point (+ accessories cost) puts that thought on hold. I really enjoy these videos in the meantime, especially the shorts!
I totally neeeeed this submarine 😍 so cool, I was unaware this even existed, thanks for sharing it with us!
Hopefully some more come up for sale online soon, I think a few people are after this one 🚤
Picocosmos: It's fascinating how theses boxes were just waiting for me to open them open.
Dankpods: Can you believe no one bought this?
😂
Thanks so much for sharing these sea monkeys, me and my brother got the mars set and our sea monkeys have been thriving, worried about what we’ll do about the second generation since I’ve heard they’re harder to raise, but your videos give me an idea of what to do. Thank you!!!
Good luck!! I’ll probably make a video at some point with tips on raising babies :)
Such a creative tank design! I think the "train" sound is actually a klaxon dive alarm. Followed by the sound of bubbles as the boat goes under the surface.
But you're right it does sound like a train on that tiny speaker!
