    I can’t believe that I have caught northern pike before you two! Kitty, here’s a tip: When a pike follows a lure right up to you, sometimes you can still get it to strike the lure if you use a figure-8 move with your rod. You two are awesome.

      We tried the figure eight on the boat for awhile actually, didn't work this time. ;) Next year!

    Fab!!! As a commercial fisher a longgg time ago I always year after year season after season never lost that really “jazzed” feeling when I brought in fish. Now that I just fish for the darn old fun of it,I STILL feel like that! It doesn’t matter if it’s just a tiny brookie or a 20 lb chinook. When you feel that tap on the rod....there’s just no feeling like it. You guys have just nailed what it’s like to love fishing. IMHO One of your best yet!

    When we were first putting our Yukon filming project together earlier this year, our plan was to explore all the unique fisheries in the region, catch some nice fish and show them to you all. As we planned it out, the project progressively evolved into something rather special.
    The term “ethical fishing” had become the theme, which can be very subjective between individuals based on differences in cultural backgrounds and beliefs. Ethical fishing may mean only harvest what you can eat, and leave the fish alone. It could also mean practicing catching and releasing as a conservation tool while fishing. The difference between these practices can lead to complex challenges when managing a fishery, as the Yukon has experienced, and British Columbians also find ourselves in similar situations as resources become limited.
    While this latest episode is my way of sharing a really memorable day in the Yukon, but it also highlights these topics by showing you that one practice isn’t necessarily more right than the other. Depending on the scenario, we as fishermen should limit our impacts on the resources.
    In this episode, we’ve chosen to release a fish that had no damages from the hook, while retaining a couple of fish that had been deeply hooked. The bottom line is, we do our best while enjoying a day of fishing, and we should continue to have these conversations to determine what is best for our resources. What I also really love about this episode, is the process of harvesting a fish, showing our appreciation, sharing and celebrating the resulting meal with friends at the end of the day. It is what fishing is all about.
    Many thanks to Dennis Zimmerman from Respect for Fish, Carcross/Tagish First Nation, Travel Yukon, Air North for trusting our content to show what your beautiful home has to offer to our viewers.

    The look on Kitty's face eating that pike summed up my feelings on them. 😄
    In Southern Alberta, we have pike swimming in just about every lake, stream and toilet. They are fun to catch, but I don't eat them. However they are the toughest fish I have ever seen. I've caught them with their gills hanging out of their heads acting like tis but a scratch.

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod  5 лет назад

      The Fraser River is closed to salmon fishing right now until August 23rd actually. Look for updates on our Facebook page or website near the end of this week to see if they'll open it for catching and releasing. It's unlikely that it will open for keeping.

    I personally think Pikes are scary looking and they are not my favourite eating fish. Caught some when I was at Northern Manitoba and they can get so big! Kinda frighten me to the point I wont swim in the lake! But nevertheless - so much fun fishing for them!

    I’m confused, Dennis said they’d use the whole fish but not seeing the skull or bones consumed! False advertising. A bone necklace making video would be nice.
