If someone doesn't need the Air Band consider the Tecsun PL-330, it's got excellent strong signal handling with external antenna + LW/MW works with external antenna.
Thanks very much. For the demo. The D808 is better than Tecsun PL-330. because it has some great filtering for shortwave. But the HRD747. Has a separate chip. For shortwave reception with a plugged in external antenna. Not forgetting. Its ability. To cover. VHF. UHF. And upper and lower sideband. TIP if using HRD747 at approx 470 mhz only use antenna extended to 150mm tweek from there (lower segments) TIP never fully extend antenna using top nob instead pinch up from Lowest part of it. Happy crackling guys
Thank you, nice real-world test you did 👍 Seems the 747 in only stronger on the air band, so maybe its name/number is not a coincidence. They both cost almost the same here in Europe and you got to question yourself if you want something ultra compact and make a compromise or use the 808, with various bandwidth settings, much better SSB reception and better overall coverage apart from the air band.
@@georgebarnes8163 thanks for mentioning, you are right, it would be cool to leave it scanning the 29.6-29.7MHz range for openings towards 10m repeaters. But here you could possibly do a memory scan, assigning the upper part of the FM segment in 10 KHz steps to memories.
@@georgebarnes8163 You are right, I forgot about it. Working with SDRs mostly, you forget how complicated it is to apply multimode demodulation in the analog world, hence to save money, it doesn't have an narrow FM demodulator.
I have both the 747 and the D-808. Is the 747 as good? No, but it's close. Considering the size and the frequency coverage it does make for a great little pocket portable. If MW (AM) DXing is what you want to do I definitely recommend the D-808. With it's oversize internal ferrite bar, it's one of the best MW radios out there even considering radios at twice the price. In some ways it outperforms my Tecsun PL880.
@@sidneycavalcant The 747 is a great FM performer. I don't know if it meets the 880, but I find it very close. The 747 is difficult to tune, but I am willing to accept that for the size. Let me just say that as a trade off for the frequency coverage range if Its the only radio you plan on owning, and you want the wide band coverage, the 747 is a good choice. If I were going to own 2 radios, I would also buy the D-808. If I were looking to pick up the best of all, I'd definitely get the PL 880 as well.
I have both of these receivers here in Australia. Performance wise the 808 is much superior to the 747. The lack of bandpass filters in the front end on SW of the 747 allows so much noise and it's easy to overload. The VHF and airband on the 747 work OK but the receiver is fairly 'deaf' at these frequencies. The airband is OK on strong local signals but the 808 on Air is much better. However I like the 747 for it's size, features and quirkiness. At least I can get the local 2M ham repeaters and beacons OK which was a consideration. I've been able to resolve Ham SSB on the 747 but it's fiddly. The 808 is a breeze. I think the 747 is better than it sounds because the tiny speaker tends to accentuate the HF noise and crackle, but when I plugged in a pair of Sony headphones it sounded so much better and less noisy. The 808 handles external antennas better than the 747. The little 747 tho' is just a lot of fun and so handy.
The HRD747 seems pretty close to xhdata considering it has smaller speaker, where is the location, it seems that day time and can get low frequencies as well as higher frequencies that is awesome:)
The largest problem I find is that most people that review radios don’t understand the nuances of how to tune them properly fine-tuning on the 747 takes some getting used to, but the results are well worth it too many reviewers are posting reviews on the 110 and the 747 and have no clue how to tune them properly
Wouldn’t those two radios sitting next to each other introduce noise to the other. The test wouldn’t work unless you actually turned the other one off. Also don’t you need to actually pick the radios up and rotate them for best signal when using bands that utilize the ferrite bar inside as an antenna ?
Possibly, but they're still both on an equal footing in terms of potential noise. And if one is more or less susceptible to it than the other, then that seems like that’d be good to know.
Thanks for your good comparing test ;-)). To be honest, and "In honor to the thruth", I will stay with my more capable D-808,.. Thanks for sharing!, Pedro fron Spain.
@@yaesu994 Yes, one guy proved it and I was very surprised ... for some reason he would connect the Long Wave rod and it would go down into the LW band ... wonder how they detect that?!
Excellent video but it really puzzles me. My experience with the TR-110 was completely different. Maybe I have received a defective unit. I have returned it for refund anyway. It was basically deaf on the air band, even compared to my equally small TR-105 with a shorter antenna. And SW was really, really mediocre. Way way below what the D-808 does.
