- Did you know that there's a Yemeni community on Jeju island, South Korea?
In this episode, we are introducing the first Yemeni restaurant on Jeju island: Wardah Restaurant. Hiro has been to Yemen before to learn Arabic , and he was excited that he was able to have "real" Yemeni food again on Jeju. We not only had the food that was on the menu, we were also lucky to try some traditional Yemeni food cooked by the Yemeni refugee, Ameen.
This restaurant was originally founded by Ameen, and his wife Min-Kyung. We were told that after this video was filmed, the couple has moved to start a new restaurant named "Asalam". Wardah Restaurant is still open. Please find more information about the restaurants on the bottom of this description.
You may wonder, Why is there a Yemeni community on Jeju island?
South Korea is the first country in Asia to implement a refugee law. Specifically, Jeju island in South Korea has a special visa waiver program that allows visa-free entry to Jeju for any passport holders for up to 30 days. Under this special visa waiver program, over 500 Yemeni refugees came to Jeju in 2018 as asylum seekers. Under the refugee law, many are staying in Jeju with "refugee status determination" residence status; Some has been recognised as refugees.
Today, Yemeni communities are around Incheon, Itaewon (Seoul), and Jeju.

Much love and respect for our neighbours across the Red Sea in who we share so much culture and traditions, our Yemen, much love again from Somalia, 🇸🇴❤🇾🇪,
And for Ethnic N program, Hiro n his team indeed we fellow your program n we love it
As a Yemeni I've always thought our cuisine would appeal to Korean tastes especially with our stew dishes and the spices we use which is also perfect for cold weather. Even the way it's served like you mentioned, we use a pot called Haradh (الحرض) which is made of stone, similar in shape and purpose to the pots Koreans use. I'm delighted to see how this restaurant bridged Yemeni and Korean cultures in that way. Thank you for sharing such a positive and interesting story on the Yemeni community in Jeju island.
Thank you so much for your information! Indeed, the stew dishes and the spices inside was like a soup for the soul. As you mentioned, there are many aspects of Yemeni culture that fits into Korean culture. We hope more Koreans can experience Yemeni culture in Korea!
انت يمني
Im yemeni!
I will definitely go back to Jeju for more Yemeni food.
I love this content because I can see the lives of the Yemen people. This clip will help to solve people's prejudices. As a South Korean, I was afraid of them(because of a series of events on the news), but when I saw this, I realized they were the same people.
We are very happy to hear this :) Please do try out Yemeni restaurant on Jeju. You will enjoy!
감사합니다, 인류는 여전히 거기에있다.
Thank you for promoting our culture and food
Greetings from Yemen
New subscriber all the way from Nairobi Kenya 🇰🇪
2:03 in yemeni cuisine we use a stone pot almost indistinguishable from jjigae pot and its carved from stone so it's really nice that this similarity between Yemeni and Korean culture would help the restaurant in terms of kitchen ware
YES!!! We have many things in common.
Korean and Yemeni dishes have a lot of similarities with stews being an important in our cuisines. Also many other things so im glad to see you enjoy eating the dishes

Fun Fact! Both Somali and Yemeni eat Maraq and Somali's eat it with chapati or they cook it in their rice to give it more flavor!
Yemeni food is one of the most famous foods in the Arab world, as Yemeni restaurants spread in the Gulf countries and are considered number one due to their different types and special spices for each type.
