Great review. Plus like others, good timing for my own personal situation. I just have to decide which path to take; powered speakers with a streamer like the C658 or use with an amp and passive speakers. You answered all of the questions I had. Things like ease of use, connectivity, control, Roon endpoint, and sound quality. I also liked the way you provided where the NAD fits in among other like or similar devices. Thumbs up!

@@kclee1 It was only a year ago, but I did purchase it, and I love it. I use it with the NAD C 268 power amp feeding Klipsch Forte IV, and I am really happy with the results. If you are looking for a pure streamer and don't need the pre-amp, my father-in-law just got the Bluesound NODE (which is another NAD company) and it sounds really great on his system for a lot less money.

I might sell it and get the C658, I know this unit will do full hardware decode for MQA. Can you just use the RCA or Coaxial Digital line out from the C658 connected to the amplifier input for the full MQA decode? I ask cause there are many DAC will only get your MQA with usb connection I just hope this is not the case. Thanks

Excellent review as always Hans. I've had my eye on the C658 for a while and as there are no local dealers reviews like yours are very helpful. I'm trying to make up my mind between this and the Minidsp SHD. Or perhaps going more discrete with streamer such as the Bluesound Node 2i -> Minidsp SHD studio -> DAC with volume control (perhaps a Topping d90 - please review it if you can). It's very difficult when you can't hear for yourself to know what you'd be losing or gaining.

It's all down to money. IF you want BluOS, MQA, DIRAC and a proper DAC below € 2000, the C658 might be your choice sound wise and it's easier to handle than all separate components....

Thanks for the review Hans. I have the Buchardt A500s with streaming Plantun hub. So far it's a pretty convenient combo streaming music mostly from Tidel sounds fine. However it doesn't do MQA which is part of my Tidel package. Also you must use and IPHONE to use the app and room correction. Call be biased but this is an Android house and I don't want to buy a used IPhone just to use with the hub. Hi Hans, since you have tested both the C658 and the MiniDSP Studio, which one do you consider the better SQ option and customer friendlier? I currently have a Musical Fidelity M5si, Topping E30 dac and Bluesound Node 2i (Tidal HIFI MQA) and Quad Z2 speakers. However, I am very interested in Dirac and like to keep using my Tidal Hifi account. I know with the MiniDSP option I will not be able to use MQA. So the C658 will offer an "all in one box" solution that I would like, however will the sound quality of the MiniDSP be significantly/noticeably better in my setup? I do have a class D XTZ Edge I can use or purchase the NAD C298 purifi amp that I am testing right now. If you would opt for the MiniDSP solution in my setup, would you choose the Studio with external DAC or the SHD version with internal DAC?

I bought the NAD C658 and I have to say that I am disappointed. BlueOS is easy to use and features such as DIRAC and home theatre bypass are very welcome. Unfortunately however, my father, an audiophile guest and I all agreed that the sound quality of the NAD is poor for its price. It does not measure up well to the discontinued Aurelic Aries Mini. The Aries Mini came out in 2016 for a retail price of $699 USD, so it is quite a fair comparison because the Aries Mini is much older and considerably cheaper than the NAD.
While the NAD is not harsh, it's lack of audio resolution is very noticeable. Vocalists lack the individual timbrel characteristics that I expect to hear. Instead one vocalist tends to sound very much like the next. Another issue is the sounds of drums which seem to die almost instantly: like they are being playing in anechoic chamber. The Aries Mini does not suffer from either of these faults. If anything I find the Aries too excitable but it can be tamed by selecting the smooth filter in the settings menu. Altogether the NAD doesn't sound bad but just unsatisfying. I feel that it under-performs audibly for its price.
