I lived and was teaching in a small town in Thailand in 2012-2013. The banana tree part at 13:15 is fairly accurate. I saw one of my students 'training' on a tree about the same size after school. He unleashed a flurry of kicks with both legs for about 20 seconds on the tree that was impressive, but did not bring the tree down.

Yes, because Kickboxing back then was a sport invented for American kitty boys, so they could feel tough... Alexio tried his hand at Muay Thai after this movie, and was quickly shown that kitty boys have no place in Muay Thai.
They used to have his Muay Thai debut right here on youtube, but might have removed it in this snowflake day and age, because it was a bit gruesome... he managed to throw one single low kick, that was checked... that's all I'm gonna say :)))

@@iaincowell9747 No, it wasn't. He shattered his tibia and fibula, when the other fighter checked his kick.
While you do kick with the hardest part of the tibia, the part below the knee is FAR harder. And if you angle your leg just right when checking, it's even worse.
It takes YEARS to condition your legs, to be able to throw kicks to the thighs and mid section with full force, and NOT injure yourself badly when being checked by a conditioned fighter.
That's why you learn with, spar with and even amateur fight with shin pads.
You can't just condition them over night, or in the span of one camp.
His bones were already broken, when he put his leg back down.
There might have been a depression, but that just made it worse.

Muay Thai is hands down one of if not the hardest combat sports, especially in Thailand. Most fighters start training around 8 years old and are professionals by 15 or even younger. Whereas American boxers and MMA fighters fight every few months on average. Muay Thai fighters in Thailand compete every couple of days it’s not uncommon for fighters to retire with well over 100 fights. And they harden their shins by kicking bamboo treed, and there’s video of some kicking them down.
Most have trouble walking when they get old, but it’s how they earn a living to take care of their families! Look up Buakaw and Saenchai, they’re terrifying

Neat fact time Chuck Norris was originally supposed to play Kurt Sloane, Like Kurt Sloane, Jean-Claude Van Damme was born in Belgium and studied ballet and Karate, Dennis Alexio, who plays Eric Sloane, was a World Light Heavyweight and World Cruiserweight Kickboxing champion in real life and Michel Qissi was a technical advisor/choreographer when he overheard the production crew say they were looking for a tall "oriental-looking" guy with a background in Muay Thai. He volunteered, and got the part of Tong Po despite not having any East/Southeast Asian background (he was born in Morocco). Credit to TV Tropes. PS Kicking hard items is a thing is these countries just look at certain monks they can harden parts of their body so even a drill can't go trough them.

I told you would love it bro thank you for us fans by the way Tong po is a character also from Bloodsport when Chun-Li smash the other guy's foot that was Tong po he was the one that fought the very fight Kumite the first fight oh yeah. His name is Mohamed Michelle of course I can't pronounce his last name but it starts with a Q. Cuz I think he's from the region. Middle East and he grew up with VanDam since he was seven figure that part out. So in real life they were more like brother friends.🤝👍👑🥊🥊🥋🎎🧧 on one last thing the 197 likes was me.

Kickboxer 2 & 3 follow in a story line with this classic, number 2 is darker but number 3 definitely has some depth to it that I know you’ll like.
Also Double Impact is an iconic van damme movie that stands on its own for its story, brutal action sequences and dark theme, all definitely worth a watch if you’d like to follow on from this.

What's funny about kicking the tree with shins is that in real life, some muay thai / kickboxer fighters over the decades have broke their shins in half during fights. And some of these fractures have been video recorded. The inner part of the shin, facing inward, basically has no fat & muscle, so it's just skin, then bone. Feel it yourself. The impact shock of kicking with the shin's inward side is much greater as there is no muscle & fat in that area to absorb the hit against a hard object such as shin against shin, or hitting metal, cement or even live bamboo. This is also why it stings really bad if you hit your front shin on something. Those nerves are there for a reason. You may not get a broken leg on the first few hits, but it is slowly developing hairline fractures. Kickboxers usually try to hit soft tissue of the opponent, but will sometimes accidentally hit shin on shin & that becomes a worry in their future.

me and my best friend use to do that dance every time we went out to a club or parties. never gets old. I and my best friend would watch this all the time. Also, Tong Po was in bloodsport and was the Brazilian fighter who got his leg broken by Chong Li . Great reaction as always. Recommend another classic King of the Kickboxers.

Put it this way, they measured the pressure from a champ muy tai boxer that weighed 145 lbs. The knee strike measured being in a 35 mph car crash.

Fun fact. His brother in the movie was a Kickboxing champion in real life. Dennis "The Terminator" Alexio. If he wasn't undefeated in real life he didn't lose many.
Just looked. 69-1. 63 knock outs. Only one loss.

3:47 He is doing the "Wai Khru" or "Wai Khru Ram Muay". It is a dance-greeting to respect the sensei, the sport and the opponent and all of their families.
It is not scary, as long as you don`t make fun of it, like some foolish tourists do in Thailand :-( It is just paying great respect, which is a huge thing in their and general south-east asian culture. I`ve watched much Muay Thai in Bangkok and throughout Thailand and it is amazing. I can highly recommend it, if you are a fan of martial arts :-)
*edit* 13:17 I always have goosebumps, when the sensei says that there. This was the turning point for Kurt in this movie. The film itself might feel a bit cheesy nowadays, but still is a classic.
    Greetings from Germany my friend

Finally you have done it ! :D Funny thing to me is to see the scenes in Bangkok at the beginning. Never paid attention to it when I was a kid, but since I backpacked all around South East Asia later, it's interesting to see how my crazy Bangkok was in the 80's ! I hope you will do the second movie soon, even if Van Damn is not in it. It's a good one ;)
