You are so right about word of mouth. In fact, that’s why REN blew up like he did. His mastery of his own genre. First thing I thought of when I started down the REN path was that he is the epitome of the Bard of old times. He is a true story teller. He writes his stuff, directs his own stuff, edits his own stuff, etc etc etc. One thing nobody talks about is not only how special he is, but his crew and the ability of REN to choose the right people who surround him.

Just like punk grew up out of lower working class kids in the cities, rap is the equivalent that came out of black and POC neighborhoods. One of the first punk bands is Bad Brains which is a black group. There's a lot of crossover in the early years of these two musical genres since they both grew up out of discontent with the status quo, racism, and poverty. I never really listened to hip-hop/rap before Ren. One of the things I have enjoyed the most both about listening to his music AND watching reaction videos who break down his lyrics is that it has exposed me to so many other artists that I might have never checked out otherwise. Specifically some of the Hip-Hop/Rap artists that he has given nods to - that I missed as references until reactors called them out. But also, some amazing artists in genres I do enjoy like Barrington Levy in "Murderer" ... and Manu Chau in one of the Big Push covers ...
I do enjoy watching others go through the discovery process and vicariously re-experiencing falling in love with Ren from the beginning, but also I've learned so much from fans of music that I missed out on the first time around. Don't want to cut down anyone's creative outlet HOWEVER...there IS something to be said about TASTE. To be open to AT LEAST listen is the first step. I couldn't agree more Louann! One can be original and innovative while pulling inspiration from what they love and others. I'll never knock an artist for that because it's one thing to bite someone's style etc. vs paying homage. I feel like Ren pays homage in a way most don't. And for Blondie np! At the time that mf was spitting lmao! I am a history buff so even at my age I've always gone back and did my HW on things I care about and hell some I don't care about lol. It's hard for me to love anything and not care about the origins of it.

He does tend to swing heavily into Jamaican flows when he busks and sings with his band.

I don't listen to rap or hip hop..but love Ren. I'm in to metal and heavy stuff like that. 23:21 I've been telling people that for years. I'm a 58 year old rocker and I find so many of my generation and the previous one always complaining about contemporary music. We were spoon fed fantastic music in 70's. Well, times have changed and now it's a treasure hun and honestly, I've found well over a hundred great contemporary artist and Ren's my absolute favourite of them all. Honestly, I had the same favourite act over 40 years until Ren.

He does it in a way that many don’t and that’s rare. Ren has my Repsect for sure
FYI Ren has been too ill in recent year to play concerts (although that's starting to change with SGP in July). Now he's getting stronger he has plans to play some gigs, but until then he records live/acoustic versions of a lot of his songs. Usually he wants to adapt and make it different to the original and avoids recorded beats. This will explain why the rap songs are mostly only available as 'official video'. Next in line is 'Losing it (Fisher Retake)'
