Double Mastectomy Surgery. The Hardest Part Of My Breast Cancer Treatment

  • This was the hardest part of Delia’s breast cancer journey, a double mastectomy (bilateral mastectomy). They remove all of the tissue in both breasts during this procedure. Chemotherapy had its own challenges with hair loss and various other side effects, but there was still the knowledge that her natural hair would eventually grow back and the side effects would subside over time that brought some comfort back. With this surgery, knowing that a large part of her womanhood was going to be permanently removed was a mental hurdle Delia had to overcome in the weeks leading up to the surgery.
Post surgery recovery was quite a bit more challenging as well. They placed drains on either side of her with tubes protruding out of the abdomen with open incisions. These along with the large incisions and metal expanders placed in her chest wall caused a lot of pain and discomfort, and eventually, an infection so bad she needed to be rushed to emergency surgery. We will document this in upcoming videos.
Despite this ongoing trial, Delia continues to do her best, wearing that radiant smile that lights up a room.

My mom had a mastectomy, she had cancer stage 4, 9 chemotherapies, 23 radiotherapies and 10 years under cancer medication. Years after the mastectomy she got a reconstructive surgery, now her breasts are better than before and she loves them. My mom is a cancer survivor, it's been 19 years since her diagnosis.

Okay. As a nurse, I am VERY impressed with your entire explanation of the procedures and about what you can expect post-op. I swear, doctors should take notes. You explained everything perfectly, but you did it in a way that even medically illiterate people would absolutely understand. Very cool.

My daughter, 40 years old just went thru exactly the same thing than you are, Delia. I was sooo unbelievably amazed of the way you have been facing every step of your cancer treatment. You are Delia, just like my daughter was, a warrior that the cancer can never bring down. Watching you going thru this, mesmerizes me as you look just like my daughter, not only physically but also emotionally. I have soooo much admiration the way the two of you have faced this very difficult disease. You have a few hurdles to overcome yet, but you are at the end of this marathon. My daughter is about one year after her final reconstruction and she hikes 1 hour a day with her dog and is back on her peloton and just started golf a few months ago. I am telling you that because I want you to know Delia that before you know it, that is exactly where you will be, enjoying every minute of life with your amazing husband Derek. You are so lucky to have each other……your husband has an amazing, sweet and very strong wife and you , you have the support and the love of your very special husband that is so extremely important with what you are going thru physically and emotionally. Hey Delia, I'm sorry you have to go through this. I had my own bilateral mastectomy just over a year ago when I was 30. My diagnosis was similar to yours -- IDC, stage 3a, triple positive. My biggest advice to anyone going through this is to find a support group with other young women as soon as you can. Post-treatment is actually one of the most difficult times for a lot of women because you're finished with the "fighting" phase, and now have to face a new reality. I'm sure you've felt that way some already. YSC is a great organization for women diagnosed under the age of 40, because our experiences are quite different than older women going through this. They also have local chapters in a lot of areas. Listening to other women and getting advice and support is extremely liberating and powerful. We're now part of the worst club, with the best people. Hang in there, it definitely gets better. Sending love.

I had bilateral skin sparing mastectomy. They were not able to save my nipples due to size, on the non cancer side and I had pagets disease as well as IDC on the other side. I had a 9 1/12 hour surgery. The drains are the worst part. I had 10 more surgeries before my reconstruction was completed. Radiation causes some complications. But it saved my life so I’ll never complain. Radiation is a walk in the park compared to what you’ve completed Delia. Worst part, is having to go there daily lol. But I’m like you. I had cancer, cancer never had me. I refused to let it steal my joy. Or take away who I am. I’m a happy person by nature, and I wasn’t going to let it take that from me. That is mine. I just celebrated 5 years NED (no evidence of disease) watching this I relived the loss of my breasts. It’s a loss deep down I will always grieve. I have acceptance, I love my reconstruction, my tattoos are incredible. And I don’t miss not having to wear a bra lol. But I miss sensory feeling. It’s just skin. It’s no longer my breast. I’m here for you cancer sister. In any way. Please reach out. 💕👐🏻

We went through this medical process with my mother about 7 years ago. It was difficult to see her deal with illness, our stalwarts matriarch. She also healed many in her line of work. But with the double mastectomy and reconstruction, she is able to not have to keep looking back and also was able to feel like a woman again with new boobs. She’s active and confident. She’s more spiritual. She’s also doing well. We’ve advocated for Breast Cancer Awareness and research. She still has to take medication for the rest of her life.
I just want to express how much I admire you. When I first watched your vlog, I saw this young woman who seemed to have everything. But then I started to see your spirit, kindness and goodness. You and your husband declare your faith and testify of all your mortal experiences. And still you work and give. Blessings of healing and light to you Sister in Christ. What an awe inspiring calling to have from Heavenly Father.

Delia, you are such a beautiful young woman and seem so calm throughout this very difficult journey - sending you healing prayers and, whilst it is hard to watch this, I want to say a big thank you for taking us on this journey with you. Obviously you have such great support, especially from Dylan, but know that all your RUclips family are rooting for you to make a full and speedy recovery. Stay strong, you've got this! Xx

Omg...... I'm literally crying. Since the beginning of Delia's breast cancer journey I've been following along with you guys. My grandmother was recently diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer and has undergone 7 chemo cycles as of this month. This video in particular was the most hard for me to watch, knowing that my grandmother may very well undergo the same surgery. Delia is soo strong!!! I'm crying typing this! Wow!!!!! You guys will beat this!!!! ❤️

My heart just goes out to both of you-to Delia for being so brave in spite of all the harrowing twists and turns she has faced/faces, and to Dylan for being so brave in his own realm of fear and uncertainty while remaining supportive. I know it would be difficult to be in either of your places, but you handle this journey with such grace, hope, and love. You’re both in my thoughts and prayers, always. ♥️

Hey Delia! Praying over you. My family and I always have you in our hearts. My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was in her mid 30s. She tested positive for the braca gene which lead my sisters and I to get tested for it. My younger sister who is 22 tested positive and in March will under hospice a double mastectomy and later she will go through the hysterectomy. You have been such a light in this season of life. Thank you for being so open, you help my little sister daily. We continue to pray over you. Thank you for bringing us on this journey with you. You have no idea how helpful you have been

My love, hugs and prayers go out to both of you. I went through a double mastectomy with my Momma 36 years ago. What a journey of faith, grace, love and light she had, just as Delia does now. Things have changed so much since my Momma went through treatment, surgery and radiation.
I'm standing in the gap praying for Delia's complete healing. What a beautiful warrior you are sweetie ! Dylan, you remind me so much of my Daddy. His constant love, support, encouragement, doing anything she needed. You are 1 in a million! Again sending my love, hugs and prayers from a Kansas Grandma ❤️

Others may not have identical paths, procedures and treatments, but they're able to glean so much valuable information from you sharing your journey. Thank you for sharing! I'm continuing to pray for healing and joy for you. Love you girl!!❤
