Robbie Robertson, Levon Helm, Rick Danko, Garth Hudson, and Richard Manuel will go down in history as some of the most accomplished and capable musicians to ever play rock 'n roll.
Rest well, Robbie Robertson. Thank you for writing this brilliant piece of musical art and to you and The Band for sharing it with us. Emmylou Harris's performance here is nothing less than perfection. Requiescat in Pace, Robbie.
Love this stuff ... The Band members playing other instruments ... Danko sawing the fiddle mountain style, Levon on the mandolin .... great vocals all around ... Emmylou is the voice of God.
The talent is mind blowing. Whether with the Staples Singers or Emily Lou Harris. Never will happen again. They tell a STORY ABOUT AMERICA, like nobody else could.

Seriously, Emmylou will you marry me? If you watch the entire show, notice how the Band all switch instruments on various songs, a completely talented group of people. I love how at the end of this song they keep rolling as they just all walk away.
I love Levon's voice, and he is perfect on The Weight and Up and Cripple Creek, but have to agree, Rick is my favorite, especially in this song, his raspy voice it perfect.@@howie9751

@@italianray69 Shut up moron! If not for Robbie none of the members would have even met dummy, nor toured with Dylan or made such great music together. So easy for people like you to sling the shit.

This is the only song in the movie that as not cut at the concert, but filmed on a sound stage. The movie featured the greatest collection of musicians alive ! It still has not been surpassed !
I love Emmylou and I love The Band. Wish Gram would’ve lived longer and jammed with them. Can you imagine him singing I shall be released during The Last Waltz?
If you are talking about Richard Manuel he was from Canada, as was all The Band members, except for Levon Helm who was from Arkansas. Sadly Winter Park, Fl was where Richard committed suicide.@@dabprod
One of the best songs ever, agreed! And Emmylou Harris looks like an angel just descended from above, in that simple blue dress, beautiful, pure, sweet and talented, I can only imagine all the guys from the band falling like crazy for her, who wouldn't?
Ya know what makes this song even more wonderful? For a literature geek like me anyway. . .is that Emmylou looks just like Evangeline is described in Longfellow's poem.
A group of us saw Emmylou's first concert. Late 1967, she sang and played in a small field with no stage or electronics. Just her and about 40 of us in Topanga Canyon. A beautiful day; we sat in the dried grass and listened to her (in the dark ages before cell phones, etc. we went to each other's homes and spread the word she was going to play).
I miss those guys. It kills me when people say "who" when I mention The Band; even people who were around in those days like me. Let's keep their music going. So long to Richard, Rick and the incomparable Levon Helms!
Emmylou Harris is captivating and hypnotic. I can't take my eyes off of her. She's so poised and graceful, and relaxed, very natural. If I let myself, I could sit and watch her videos all day long on RUclips.
I'm crying baby tears right now , I don't know why but this music just gets to me !. I don't know if I'm crazy or if it's just old old age , but this song gets to me !.
Got that right. Whatever it took to make each song the best it could be. Rick, Richard, Levon, and Garth; nobody ever said “That’s Not My Job.” Robbie Robertson, not so much.
Definately a bass overdub because no one but Rick could be playing that way and he is playing the fiddle too! Emmylou is the most lovely mammal of all time. Nobody else even comes close. Always loved how she wore a blue dress for this. I saw the Band three or four times and always got knocked out by them. I used this song to launch a boat that I built and will build another boat named "Emmylou." I'd like to name one "Evangeline" but that ain't lucky!
superb performance-the 60's and 70's were excellent for many genres of music. unfortumately, quality songs like this one went from few and far between to almost non-existent these days.
This is the best band ever. They are all so talented on many levels. Some people think the Beatles were the greatest but they were not even close though I do love their musict
Emmylou Harris voice, coated all over those voices like a fine sauce, making the entire recipe worth making. A womans voice is such pleasant gift to a mans open hearted sentimental idaes in song. Like silk on an axe handle, her voice makes it all glide home.
I would say it's over a decade since I listened to this track but Levon Helms voice in particular stick with me. I remember a previous comment on this that I thought was really funny. Paraphrased; Levon Helm seems like the kind of guy who could fix your fence :)

@Ergreenthumb Kudos to you for finding & enjoying old gold. I bought 'The Band' album in 1969 while living in Germany, & still have the vinyl! Imagine our hippie parties back then! There was musical magic in those days. 'The Last Waltz' graciously captures that era of music & many of its great musicians inside & outside The Band. It makes me cry too! Such beauty! Such goosebumps! Such a long time ago.
Such a lovely song! This man had troubles and yet could sing a song so appropriate to his struggles. It's a somber expression, a Ray Charles tone so clear; but, all his own. "You don't know me". That's what my X wife said! This tune is dynamic and well expressed. I hurt for this man's struggle.
Preciosa música y letra. Nunca me canso de oírla. Hace muchos años vi la película recuerdo las entrevistas, el porque se retiraban, todo el escenario austero pero impecable. Fue fantástico . Nunca la olvidaré.
Sometimes I can't even take how good The Band is...
There is something magical right t
Always love them 💕
One of a kind, a class of their own. You would understand if you ever seen/heard them.
Keith Richards talked shit on them for playing too close to their recordings. Yeah you limey fuck. They were musiciansz
The Band! Greatest group ever. I fell in love when I first heard The Weight Wayne Fouche RSA
Mississippi boy here, I have requested this song to be played at my funeral

Kudos to Scorsese for having the vison and wisdom to capture The Band's greatness before they disbanded.
The Band disbanded. ☹️
That was clearly sad damn day
No kidding, and the way he pulled it off was incredible.
And started to die off.
retired..not disbanded..I just retired after 55 years...not dead ..waiting for a new challenge
Absolutely spectactular!!! Levon Helm has always been an inspiration to me, but these guys together and with Emmylou is just magic.
Doesn't get any better one of the greatest bands with one of the greatest female vocalist..

Another beautifully written classic by Robbie, wonderfully performed by the Boys of the Band and Emmylou...! It doesn't get any better, folks!
Rick Danko at his best with that souful raspy voice. Can't get enough of him.

"Evangeline"
[Intro]
She stands on the bank of the mighty Mississippi
Alone in the pale moonlight
Waitin' for a man, a riverboat gambler
Said that he'd return tonight
They used to waltz on the banks of the mighty Mississippi
Lovin' the whole night through
'Til the riverboat gambler went off to make a killing
And bring it on back to you.
Evangeline, Evangeline
Curses the soul of the Mississippi Queen
That pulled her man away.
Bayou Sam, from South Louisian'
Had gambling in his veins
Evangeline, from the Maritimes
Was slowly goin' insane.
High on the top of Hickory Hill
She stands in the lightnin' and thunder
Down on the river the boat was a-sinkin'
She watched that queen go under
Evangeline, Evangeline
Curses the soul of the Mississippi Queen
That pulled her man away.
Evangeline, Evangeline
Curses the soul of the Mississippi Queen
That pulled her man away.
