I appreciated your and George's shout out for the song from Beatles for Sale - Every Little Thing. It continues to be the most played song on my computer's playlist. It is such a brilliant 'little' song. It kinda comes on gently with the opening guitar riff, a verse sung in a folky way (kinda like In My Life reflecting on love) and THEN the chorus and it's like a Broadway showstopper song and then it gently glides back to the verse and one looks forward to that awesome showstopper chorus...so brilliant...great to hear George loved it too :)

John was and still is massively underrated as a guitarist, but for me personally i think he was brilliant. The right hand technique (listen to All my Loving) and his chord vocabulary was excellent. He was a feel player for sure. I thought his guitar playing on Harry Lime ,Third Man theme was brilliant in Get Back Doc.

Thank you for your video! I'd like to share my experience as a viewer of Get Back, it's probably anecdotal and it doesn't matter much but in case someone wants to read.
I'm 35 and up until December 2021, I'd only been a casual fan of The Beatles. I've liked many of their most popular songs but I didn't know much about them anyway. And this last December I caught a few videos on RUclips from the Get Back movie, I got interested, I found the whole movie and I started watching it in parts. And even when I had only seen half of the first part of it, I was already obsessed. Ever since then, I've been listening to their songs, watching ''deconstruction videos'', watching discussion like yours, reading forums, reading wiki articles, reading books about them, watching stuff like the Anthology and ''8 Days a Week", watching interviews with the Beatles from various era-s.... every minute of my free time these past two months, it's been entirely devoted to The Beatles. It's almost embarrassing! But the first few weeks of my own personal Beatle mania were just surprisingly exciting. I wasn't just very interested, I was actually feeling tangibly happy excitement, sadness (that it all happened so long ago, that they broke up, etc), inspiration to create myself, just big feelings. That probably sounds very silly, but I just wanted to share, because I'm still surprised by my own reaction. It's truly fascinating and so far still mostly mysterious to me exactly why and how The Beatles managed and apaprtently still manage to inspire such excitement (and I was born four decades after they were, and last November I had no idea what the album '"Revolver" was, for example).
In short, in relation to the significance of "Get Back", I think it's telling that just that movie alone made me a huge fan of The Beatles. Now after two months of intense research of other Beatles material, rewatching some scenes of Get Back is still maybe the most pleasurable source of good Beatles feelings for me. I think just seeing them in good video quality is pretty cool on its own, but also in many ways the format of the movie creates a unique window to their complexity, talent, humanity, attractiveness. I think that the fact that it caught them in their more adult years also helps - because as much as they were adorable when younger, they are more relatable later.
So I find it a bit sad what you say about Nielsen Ratings. I'd been thinking that if Get Back was devided into 8 one-hour long episodes and released on a more popular platform like Netflix it should have been a big hit so far. It's possible that I'm wrong and that I'm an unusual 35-y.old myself, but I still think Get Back manages to transmit a lot of their universal appeal. I think that for many people it sounds like a big time investment to watch three 2,5 hour long documentary films though and that's why probably mostly people who were already fans watch it. I hope that over time more people will discover it!
I have many other thoughts, but this comment got too long, for which I appologise! :) Thank you for making and publishing your discussions.

I'm very happy to hear how profoundly Get Back affected you. I have a video coming out shortly that shows some analytics depicting an increase in the purchase of 60s music, so those Nielsen ratings are perhaps a sign of an upswing in this type of music. What better place to start than the Beatles! I appreciate the comment, Leonora.

Hello Leonora. As an original Beatles fan since Ed Sullivan, it makes me happy to see that another generation is able to share the same love we have. After the breakup, my interest waned for years. John's death brought a new realization of how great they were. George's death has done the same. My recent, first trip to Liverpool re-ignited my interest. After getting back, I finally watched GET BACK and fell in love, again.
I do enjoy when they make old references like the one about Jimmy Nichols where my memory proves to still be keen.
Finally, the ratings are meaningless. I'll upgrade my equipment when the dvd/blue-ray comes about. Thank you!

The Beatles may not have been virtuoso lead guitar players, but I prefer their style to the guys who are able to improvise all day. As a result, Beatles guitar solos are very melodic, and often have that “song within a song quality.” Stuff like “Michelle”, “Fixing A Hole”, “A Hard Days Night.” I’ll have to check out Antony’s RUclips show too. Thanks guys, I enjoyed this!

  • @70PaulK
    @70PaulK 3 года назад +19

Good discussion, especially about guitar playing. While they may not have been happiest at improvising solos (like Page, Beck or Hendrix), John, Paul & George were extremely effective at crafting licks & solos to fit with the song. That meant that the guitar parts took longer to develop (like the Let It Be solo). Perhaps that approach wouldn't have worked in a pure blues/rock band, but then the fabs are known for great tunes, where the instrumentation accompanies the vocalists.

Well-put, Paul. Yes, I think the Beatles as guitarist had to work things our more. Their contemporaries were far more blues based which I believe led those players to have an easier time improvising on the spot or in the studio.

I love this and other series by Matt. I think George’s guitar playing reflects the way all The Beatles thought about the role of instruments in Rock & Roll. They were tools to express ideas and emotions. Nonetheless, George could stand his ground with some of the best. A perfect example is his work on Alvin Lee’s song, The Bluest Blues.

I just watched Get Back and I love it, watching the Beatles do their thing, great. I got very emotional at the rooftop concert, the last live performance, a great ending to the film/documentary. From the Cavern to the top of the roof, top of the world.;-) I have enjoyed you're discussions very much, it is always great to listen to Beatle enthusiasts who see the band as they are, warts and all.. My 2 cents is that great as Get back is, they were getting into it too late and time ran out, they did not give themselves enough time. I think Paul got frustrated because he was aware that a more dedicated approach was needed and he came up with most of the songs. A couple of days before the rooftop concert there is a discussion about how many songs they have for the album and 5 or 6 is mentioned but then as they start counting we get the song list for the Let It Be album. So there are enogh songs but at what state are the songs? As a 16 year old I was at first disapointed in the Let It Be album when comparing it to the White Album which was the first Beatles alnum I ever owned and I wore it out., Let It Be had a very incomplete feel. I should have known better They were making a live album and the songs that are complete are great songs, The atmosphere improved when they got to Apple and when Billy Preston arrived, there was a sense of enthusiasm but I think they ran out of time, that and other things. I love your channel Matt ;-)

Great insights as always. As I watched the rooftop concert one more time, couldn't help but wonder how much longer the Beatles might have played had the police not arrived. But I then realized that, despite the police shutdown, this 42 minute show is longest "public" concert these guys have performed since probably 1963(?). So for those of us who regret that they "were just getting started" in this event - think of the hundreds of concerts from 1963-1966 that were all shorter that this 5 song show (yes, some of the songs were repeated).
One comment regarding guitar expertise - I recall hearing an audio of John Lennon saying that Paul and George were hanging around and jamming with the likes of Cream in the mid-to-late 60's, but he had never been a part of that scene. Perhaps this is why the one can see more growth Paul and George's playing.

To both, thank you, excellent again i think the best review/discussion of Get Back!
As a player of bass/ guitar and keyboard ! I think they could play perfectly for a studio band ? In Hamburg don’t forget they soloed for hours? But in a 50s rock style?
Of Lennon Yer Blues performance at the rock and roll circus is strong ? Clapton said he was a good guitarist! George Martin says he came up with brilliant riffs ? Paul is an incredible natural musician his bass playing is inspired, Lennon said in rock and roll the bass used was often ineffective, Paul made the bass a powerful continuation to the rock sound !
George didn’t use effects pedals well but was a top guitarist his slide playing on gimme some truth etc was gut wrenching, Lennon could also play slide really effectively!
George i think did like it to be note perfect hence improvisation was boring to him ?
Ringo i think is not John Bonham but his feel for a song is unique and i feel unmatched?
The Stones PR always gives the perception they came from blues so better musicians ! I think the mop top boy band label given to The Beatles is an insult and ignorant of their abilities?
I sat in Gerry Marsden’s of the pacemakers kitchen ( long story) he told when he watched the Beatles play the hairs on the back of his head stood up, he said they just cut right through you, the powerful beat and playing !
He said as a foursome unmatched!
The roof top demonstrates they could play, the four had a telepathic sync ?
    Thanks again
Look forward to your next videos

The Paul-Is-Dead thing has always been silly to me because no one EVER mentions the compositional aspects. They always focus on someone LOOKING like Paul, but it'd be way harder to find someone with the same compositional style who can then continue along the same creative trajectory as Paul. This video mentioned the handwriting thing, which I never thought of, which is another example of something that would add endless multiples to the difficulty. Replacing a dead person with a fake of unimaginable similarity is so silly anyway, obviously, many pop stars died early, this was never done, it's just such a crazy rumor which falls apart so easily, it's amazing it's gone on so long.

I've been fulltime working with music for 40 years, teaching students in a music school and as a musician playing all kinds of music. So I have trained ears.
I think John Lennon is very underrated as as a gutarist and even as a pianist. When you watch him playi it can look quite odd, but it always sounds very good. And he always come up with very interesting and nice riffs. Listen to his guitar on Abbey Road. It is so good. I think he developed just as much as Paul and George during the Beatles period.
I always thought that the great guiarplaying and riffs on Milk and Honey came from the studio guitarists, but when I heard the demos I realised that it actually John who came up with all that stuff by himself. I was very impressed.
All three guitarists in The Beatles are good, but in different ways, so its hard to compare them. I know this is gonna upset some Beatle fans, but George and John always sounds good. Paul doesn't.
When George are playing you can hear every string ringing out. It is very clean. He touches the strings just perfectly with his picker. It's crispy and clear.
John also touches the strings good, but just a little bit ruffer. And he his very good at fingerpicking.
Paul always find good stuff to play on his guitar, but it doesn't sounds good! Not even today, 50 years later!
He hit the strings to hard and he use his fingertips when he is strumming the guitar. It makes the guitar sound like noice. You cant hear every string clearly as when George are playing. Pauls guitar thunders.
The guitar solo on Taxman is great. George couldn't come up with that. Paul could because he is a musical genius. But it's not good guitarplaying. Believe me. If George had played exactly the same solo, note by note, it would have been on different level.

I may expand on their musicianship more because they are not known so much for their playing but some is so good! Their playing is often overshadowed by the song itself. Please correct me if incorrect but my current understanding is that Jackson originally intended for his new GB to be released as a film for general audience.
Due to covid this didn’t happen, the film was sold to Disney who offered it to their subscribers only.

Always good to see you together, easily the best two Beatles bods for me. I've always considered J Lennon along with Syd Barrett to be an early anti-guitarist in the style of the much later Post-punk era as found in groups like Public Image and Gang of Four .Indeed "Why" is very similar to some early Public Image tracks. In the "Lennon Remembers" interview he describes himself as a "primitive" guitarist and says that rock is going through its "jazz stage" with an emphasis of technique over simple expression. I'm with John ; give me 4 bars of "Why" over the majority of "proper" guitarists and their tedious soloing.

I must correct my post- the song Anyway You Want Me is the b-side of Love Me Tender, (Stu's song with the band) , Don't Be Cruel was paired with Hound Dog , the greatest double single until Strawberry Fields Forever/Penny Lane superceded it a decade later - only Come Together/Something can compare as a double A sided single..
Having listened to the bootlegs for years , I always thought Suzy Parker was an old cover but I see it credited to all 4 Beatles. Is that correct? My last comment is the amazing depth of song knowledge of the band. They play SO many covers human jukebox style it's incredible! This is a key insight into the quality of their prolific output- they loved every genre of music and it shows!

Enjoyed listening to part 3 of your discussion and, once again, you both raise some interesting points. "Paul Is Dead" rumour - I do recall an entertaining and tongue in cheek hour long presentation at one of the Beatles Conventions in Liverpool in the 80s from an American chap (can't recall his name now) and it got really forensic at times ! Interesting comment on Lennon's humour - the funny names he uses are typical scouse humour (I should know as I am a scouser and have plenty of "funny names"). Plus Lennon was a fan of the Goons as well and he was a big reader too so he enjoyed wordplay. In terms of his humour, I do think he loved making McCartney laugh and that he enjoyed the banter with Paul. Personally, I do think he used humour to patronise George occasionally as his comments about "I Me Mine" walk a fine line between banter and putting George down (just my own view). Finally, the musicianship - I think it may be in the "Living In The Material World" documentary where George says he basically gave up playing the sitar in 1968 and went back to the guitar; and, for me, that's why George's lead guitar playing is brilliant on Abbey Road and Let It Be because he's fallen back in love with the guitar and probably having a break from it helped. I think his finest lead is on "Octopus's Garden". Paul was by far the best musician in the band; I think at one point in Get Back Lennon actually says something like "that's why I don't do solos" and Paul and George join in saying similar things ! Matt, I see you have another video with Antony specifically about his Glass Onion podcast so going to watch that now ! Great work on your channel !

18:30 That's true about JL even to the end of his life - - I remember the Playboy interviewer saying when he knocked on the door he heard JL coming to open the door singing "Here's David She-ff, Come to ask questions with answers that no one will hear", to the tune of 'Eleanor Rigby.' It seemed to be PM's songs that he lampooned. 22:20: 'I Me Mine' waltz - - I haven't researched how it was composed, but I wonder if GH added that raunchy middle-8 to cut up the waltz in self-conscious response to JL's dig at a 'waltz'? 1st time we hear GH's run-through it's slowly gently maudlin with no indication it could detour into a hard-rock middle-8... And
I wonder how far away technologically we are from a H-D disc that holds enough data to contain 8 hrs of footage from each of 4 cameras - - 32 hrs - - and maybe the same duration of Nagra tapes. And a hub menu capacity to mix our own GET BACK edit, either on the fly or preprogrammed. And maybe give ourselves a Director's credit onscreen. An interactive boxset. I'd probably just watch each camera's footage right through x4. Two or three viewers with good rhythm might edit a better cut than what we're got. A known director with time on his hands might want to take a crack at it from his living room. I want to see a Woody Allen cut of GET BACK, even though it would probably be 1 hour and 15 minutes. And Francis Coppola's 33-hour cut. There could be hundreds of alternate bootlegs on disc and online of different GET BACK versions. Does this undermine the director's status? I thought that had already been done. But I can't see Peter Jackson enjoying that prospect for one second, though that's what he's expecting Michael Lindsay-Hogg to do.

Great three part series, thanks for putting this together. I’ve watched Get Back four times and the one thing that always upsets me is my perception of their inability to come up with a complete, defined set list that would’ve flowed in such a way that would’ve worked for a live show, a la “Unplugged” as George suggested the “Let It Be” concept was during the Anthology interviews. I imagine if Epstein had been there, then perhaps he could’ve gotten them to come up with a final set list, to include four of George’s songs such as All Things Must Pass, Old Brown Shoe, For You Blue, and I, Me, Mine. All that was missing was a Ringo song. They could’ve had the 14 numbers.
The set list could’ve progressed from all of the electric rockers to the more acoustic pieces, and then finished up with the piano ballads.
The whole “Get Back” concept for the live recorded album, documentary, and TV show was a great idea that could’ve hit the bullseye with more time and some singular and effective direction.

John's humor: I totally get John because I do much the same. Peoples names being played with was just word play. At one point he also referred to The Beatles as, The Bottles. When I was around his age, I used sarcasm as a humor tool. Eventually I made it all about being self-deprecating so as not to hurt anyone's feelings. But I just love word play, and so did John.
Musicianship. It surprised me to learn how any of them knew about music theory. Although they did not seem to know the details and terminology of music theory, they did still have a quirky intuitive understanding of theory. None of them were virtuosos as you said and that is part of the reason, they were so great. I am a Waylon Jennings fan in the same way you guys are into the Beatles but I am the first to say, he was not that good of a player. But there was something about his style of playing that still fires my blood like no one else can. There is nothing more boring than listening to technically perfectly played music. It has no soul. " I could'nt believe how much the Beatles had painted them selves into a corner before they began." He also said, " I wonder if there might be a T.V. show to be found in all the cans of film for Magical Mystery Tour?" " I'm waiting for Paul and Ringo to get back to me." I also heard another radio broadcast with a speech expert who said, " Speech on it's own can be very cold." I wish I could remember more details. I don't remember what the benefit to the band would've been but I'm guessing maybe more money. Have you heard this from Paul and, if so, what do you think he was referring to? In the meantime, I'll see if I can find the interview (I think there were actually 2 different interviews where he said this).

John's Beatle playing always fit the time that it was in and if you are doing a project like "Get Back" to your roots and there he is with the Get Back and For You Blue solos AND his classic rhythm playing throughout. He was a writer and creator first and foremost, but the playing always fit the bill and did very much here - an extemporaneous free-form that definitely "got back".
And with "Across the Universe" - now considered a standout track on Let It Be. It's brilliant. And yes, I bought the original album back in the day. When you follow up the release of an album like Abbey Road, just about any effort would pale. So glad that Peter Jackson took on this project to tell the tale of the January 69 sessions so we could ALL be hanging out with the Beatles as they showed their creative process, which had a different mindset per album.
Matt, your casts are very well done with excellent guests. Keep producing.

Re: I Me Mine.... watch George talking about writing it, he was inspired by a waltz on tv the night before! He describes the show. Then when John and Yoko dance while George Paul Ringo are playing, George has his huge George grin on his face... he's clearly loving it! And then as the song concludes, George says that they should dance to the song on the (tv) show... of course that never happens as they drop the tv show idea. But I really am disgusted by the misunderstandings about John and his relationship with the other Beatles...they so clearly love each other... and like all families they have complex stuff going on. But this particular episode of I Me Mine... and this story that John made fun of it in a mean way is just completely exposed as the LIE that it is by the PJ doc...

I want to say thanks to Matt for saying what he said about people that just can't see how John used to be and stick the same old narrative he was dismissing George's songs. No, he was not. That is John being John. People watch the movie with old ideas in their mind. Therefore they just can't see.
Yes, best part for me was exactly they singing together. Harmonizing.
I could not see anything good in Yoko Ono in any moment. She looked totally fake all the time. Phony. Acting. I doubt she decided to knit because she need that...She did that so catch attention only. I am sure about it.
Worst part: John being rude to the little girl heather asking if she would eat cats. No, that was not John being John who loved cats really very much. The reason he decided to say those insensitive things is a mystery to me. Impossible not to think it was only because the girl was Linda's daughter. But of course, I can't be sure about that. I only know I could not recognize John at that moment.
But...my favorite moment was also thanks to John. Commonwealth...Yes!
Some moments I loved is not related to music. For instance: George saying to Paul he liked his looks with that beard. So cute.
I loved when Ringo informing about his fart! I laughed out loud.
Paul and John talking about the connection between some of their songs. John would say Don't let me down and Paul would say I will never let you down...Like if they were lovers.
Paul playing Oh Darling alone letting clear it was for John.
    Paul singing Straweberry Fields Forever
    Paul composing Get Back
BIlly Preston arriving bringing light and joy to everybody
The whole concert at the roof too. They looked like Gods up there.
And they way it ended. Good Night, John...Good Night Paul...
As for streaming...I don't think they could really know about it. Here in Brazil lots of people saw it not on Disney. I am one who saw it in another place I don't even know the name. People in Brazil are not very honest about such things. People started making copies. As I have no Disney Channel I was delighted to see that I could see it somewhere else. I got worried about it...If lots of people making copies it could be bad for The Beatles...it would not be in charts and yet we were watching it over and over again. But I had to accept that because otherwise I would not able to see it. In the second week I already had my own copy as a gift. I didn't ask for it. It just arrived in my hands from a friend that know how I love the Beatles. Yes, he made a DVD out of it. Lots of people did it, Matt. So, it is amazing it was number seven in the originals chart. I really thought most would not pay for that knowing we could watch for free.
And I also saw that the Album Let it Be was number one that week! And it was mainly thanks to the documentary. What else? People would talk only about Get Back anywhere I would go. I do believe it can be considered a tremendous success.

I'm willing to entertain a conspiracy theory as long as it can be rationally possible AND within the laws of physics. "Paul is dead" fails too many tests to entertain. Related: One of the bands I'm with (we started by accident in 1991 and have had a decent measure of success over the ensuing decades in our VERY niche genre) performed at a festival in Poland in 2001. I was finishing college and couldn't go on the trip. But in the last few years, it's been accepted as 'canon' that I was there. Come on, guys, how can you even discuss this Paul-is-dead topic? Paul has a unique talent. He has proven that so many times through all these years. How do you copy that? Do you really think you can find a guy similair to that? This enormous flow in songwriting. This capacity in playing all this instruments. His unigue style on piano because he is lefthanded. Playing bass and guitar lefthanded PLUS being able to pick up a righthanded guitar and play it (Georges brown Telecaster). The same high pitched voice. Same abilities in harmony voicing. Same sound in his voice. Same personality!!! etc etc. Do you really think you can find a guy like that? A guy that had been hiding all this unique talent, and never try to fly on his own wings? And above all this, a guy with exactly the same face. Same asymmetrical Eyed and eyebrows. Same nose (it's not straight) same ears, same teeth. Same forehead. Same everything!!! Do you really think it's possible to copy all that? It's only in bad movies you can do that.

I don't believe for a second that you think Paul is dead. My arguments against the Paul-is-dead theory is not me trying to convince you that Paul is not dead.
What I mean is that memories from the beatles history you can learn in theory. Remembering old songs is possible to learn. Falling in when George is singing Every Little Thing is quite possibly. In theory.
Those arguments is not strong arguments. If you whant to "send those assholes up", use strong arguments! And the strongest arguments are these about talent, musical and songwriting skills, physical things like face and lefthanded etc etc, and one that I forgot to mention: Time! How do you transform yourself into one of the greatest musicians and composers in such a short time? One week, two weeks? The Beatles had a very tight scedule.
And when you're talking about the Nagra tapes, as If they made you sure that Paul is not dead, it's easy to think: "Oh, so he wasn't sure about it earlier",

I think even a causal Beatles fan, with knowledge of Aunt Mimi's tapes, knows that John had a troubled childhood with his mother living only a few miles nearby. The feelings of abandonment and feelings of loss cannot be underestimated, particularly for a sensitive young lad. John's songs generally are always about him, his mood, his feelings, his observations--he was an only child and his music is self-centered. Polythene Pam was a real person, probably the close as John ever got to writing a "Paul" song.
