They teach kids as young as 17 to be crew chiefs for the A10. They learn the aircraft inside and out in under 1 year. They are then assigned an aircraft and are responsible for that aircraft’s combat readiness. I worked maintenance scheduling at the engine shop, (TF34 and F129 engines) at the squadron level (a specific number of aircraft) and at the wing level (all aircraft for a base). I got to see the A10 up close and learn its capabilities very intimately. It truly is everything they say it is and more. You’re only allowed to see the unclassified features of this air tank. The defensive and offensive features that were not included are what make the A10 stay resistant and lethal even with all the advances in technology since its creation.

One thing a lot of people do not understand that close air support is close. They do not often travel at the typical altitude of 15,000 feet or more. The air is much thicker down there. Few aircraft can actually go super sonic at this altitude do to the thicker atmosphere. The A-10 only goes about Mach .7 or .8 at most, but at these altitudes that is plenty fast enough.
Also understand those pylons are made to carry anywhere from a 300 pound missile or bomb on the outer wings to 1000 pounds or more on the inner pylons. The smaller munitions can be on special mounts. The small diameter bombs like the GBU-39B mounts 4 on each pylon. Smaller 250 pound bombs are typically mounted in 3s. This lets them carry a wide variety of munitions to fit many roles as needed. Close air support is dangerous still and that is why people question the continued use of the A-10.
The A-10 has also gotten a recent upgrade with a new wing and new avionics and electronics. One of the fuselage mounts carries and external weapons pod that added laser guidance back in the 80s and 90s. They are upgrading this to handle all the new missile and bombs. It is getting a new targeting system, new radar, new electronics.. The new wing also extends it service time another 20 years. They also have upgraded radio and data connections.

The GAU-8 actually makes three sounds associated with the gun. Firing the gun itself makes a buzz sound, the rounds are supersonic so each round produces a sonic boom, and the explosions when the shells hit the ground. I've seen video where you can hear all three.

There is an a10 that has an f22 kill sticker on it. Basically one a10 managed to kill an f22 in a combat drill. Should point out that it started with the f22 being in a disadvantage, but still cool fact that the a10 got that “kill.”

    • @elecjack1
      @elecjack1 6 месяцев назад +3

A lot of A-10 pilots say they get more victories than most people would expect in exercises against fighter jets. They say that often they think it is due to underestimating them. They think it will be an easy kill, yet they forget that the A-10 can fly really low, has a great turn radius and carries a sidewinder.
It may be old and slow and not designed for air-to-air combat, but it can bite so take it seriously and don't give it the chance or the one in the air superiority fighter will end up looking like the fool. 😉

TBH, I love both the A10 AND the F22. But please keep in mind they're two completely different types of planes for different purposes.
One is a close air support plane that's intended to fly low and slow (relatively) and put lotsa lead and ordinances on targets on the ground with pinpoint accuracy. They're DESIGNED for long loiter times and can both receive and deal out lotta damage.
OTOH, the other is a long range killer ninja that can sneak into the battlefield, find the enemy (whether it be on ground/water or in the air), launch long range precision guided missiles and take them out before the F22 are even detected and make their way back home without being detected. Their on board machine guns are backup weapons of last resort that's intended for only if they get caught at close range. But with their advanced suite of radars and other sensors they shouldn't ever be caught with their figurative pants down.
    Ground pounders and Ninja Snipers.

The A-10 specializes in air to surface, and the F22 Raptor specializes in air to air combat. So yes, the F22 vs A10 would almost always be F22. However, the F22 is also a phased out generation. The F35 is the newer generation, but the F18 Hornet, F15, and F16 are more commonly used over the F22.

The decision to retire the A-10 is a perfect example of the USAF brass not knowing what ground troops really need.
In Afghanistan, they tried to provide Close Air Support with a low altitude flyover by F-15s, and that works in certain situations. It's mostly about intimidation. It's useless against targets in cover or enemies that don't care or are otherwise aware that the flyover won't hurt them. At best, it will get enemies to abandon cover because they think a bomb is about to drop on their position.
The A-10 deletes the cover and the enemies behind it. It's a morale booster, too. In conventional warfare, air superiority is better, but if the past 60+ (arguably 250+) years of warfare is any indication, all warfare eventually becomes unconventional warfare.

It's called the warthog because it was made by Fairchild Republic, the F-84 Thunderjet was called the "hog" by pilots (supposedly due to ponderous handling on the tarmac and long takeoff runs), when the F-84F Thunderstreak came out (note that the Thunderstreak was actually a completely new aircraft not just an upgraded Thunderjet, they retired the Thunderjets and reused the F-84 designation on a brand new aircraft) it was called the super hog, when the F-105 Thunderchief came out, that was the ultra hog. So when the A-10 came out because it was a Fairchild aircraft the pilots called it the warthog because it was ugly and made by Fairchild Republic.

Sixty, and from a proud military family. I have never in my life heard of a ground-pounder who did not love this plane. You must’ve heard from somebody who never had their ass saved by one.

A-10 vs F-22. 2 very different planes for 2 very different jobs.
I would say that it is similar to comparing a sledge hammer to a rapier.
Except the guy with the rapier has a longer reach.

My second favorite aircraft right behind my beloved B-52. But im biased as I flew in one and not the other.
BTW the sound of that gone is not really completely unique, the 20mm m61 I used sounded very very similar.

Hate to say it but you indeed would be very wrong. The A-10 would literally never see the F-22, and even if it did The Kid has every possible advantage in a dogfight, including superior radar, superior battlefield awareness (sensor fusion), superior maneuverability, and superior AA missiles.
Yes, the hawg is durable, but it's THAT durable. With The Kid up its tail just emptying its 20mm gun, and every AMRAAM it has to give, it's a fair bet the A-10 is at least a mission kill and has to RTB, if not a KO.

I have only seen A-10s at airshows but Ill tell you what, they are VERY impressive. They swoop in and flip around on a dime with those wing tip ailerons. You don't even hear them as they first dive in. They should be effective for decades to come once F-35's take down air defenses. Its not just the plane, the Airforce is also loosing the skill and focus on ground support and rescue that these A-10 pilots have and nobody else in the USAF trains nearly as much for. A critical skill loss USAF and sadly USA will sorely miss.

Dude, the A-10 is close air support plane. The F-22 is air superiority. The A-10 wouldn’t even know the F-22 is there. Wouldn’t even be a fight.

Especially since the A-10 does not have RADAR, though it will be getting an AESA RADAR pod with the new upgrades

The F22 and the A 10 do a specific job. A 10 is for ground support, and F 22 is for air definse.

We played with this toy airplane I the early 1980s. GI Joe toy. The bad guys "Cobra" had the "Rattler" an A 10 painted black.

The A-10 is for ground support, not air to air combat. It would lose quick in a dogfight with almost any fighter jet on the planet. But for the job it's intended for, there is nothing better.

The A10 is a fine aircraft. However despite what was claimed, the gun on it is not the largest gun on an aircraft. The AC-130 has a 105mm howitzer on it, as well as the 30mm GAU-23.

  • @999maza

The A-10 is amazing for close air support, but any fighter jet can fly circles around it. If there are enemy fighters around, we'd send in the fighter/multirole jets like the F-22 and F-35 first.
