Also labeled "the Road to the Sky", "the Road to the Clouds", "the Best Driving Road in the World" and even "A spectacular Monument to Earth-Moving Megalomania" the TransFagarasan climbs, twists and descends right through Moldoveanu and Negoiu - the highest peaks in Fagaras Mountains and in Romania.
Built for military purposes at the initiative of Romania's last communist leader Nicolae Ceausescu, this dynamite-forged road connects two of Romania's historic provinces Transylvania (the Center) and Walachia (the South) through a series of five tunnels, 27 viaducts and 831 small bridges.
The TransFagarasan ranges in elevation from 1,630 feet at Cartisoara to almost 6,700 feet at Balea Lac. The road is below the tree line until about 5,000 ft. and then it opens up and reveals itself.
Open end-to-end: late June through end of October (weather permitting).
The highest step-waterfall in Romania, Balea is more than 60 metres tall. It can be reached from the Balea Lac cable car station in around an hour, via a well-marked hiking route.
The construction of the road began in 1969 at Ceausescu’s initiative and ended in 1974, but its completion with asphalting took place in 1980. Unfortunately, many human lives were lost during the construction due to the difficulty of this project.
The road was completed on September 20, 1974, at Ceausescu’s inauguration. Originally, the alpine route would bear his name, but he refused, and so his name became Transfagarasan.
Lake Balea is a glacier lake (formed in a glacier circus) located at an altitude of 2,040m in the Fagaras Mountains, Sibiu County.

@@IdealBike Right. Me too. But i heared that the rpm are a bit low. That's why i thought that you use it on automatic.
It's always up to your preferences, the most important at descending it's to use properly the engine brake, it's very efficient.
It's a real shame that such a beautiful road is so poorly maintained.
Because of the hard winters, each year the tarmac quality decreases. This year I saw that it's started to be maintained more often, at least on it's the north side. However, it should be much better than that. Greetings!
