Man I love that I watch your videos coming away relaxed but also feeling like I've learned something. You seem like the nicest guy as well. Would love to see more chess vids Chycho. Keep up the fantastic work 👍🏻
Thanks for the support, Mark. This is a labor of love for me so I'm really happy to have a platform to share the work and that it's being received in this light.
As for more chess videos, will do. I already have one lined up, showing you guys the wooden chess board that I have, just need to go through a few more boxes to see if I can find all the pieces... we see :)
Wow! Re-visiting this video a few years after the fact, and it still has that same impact on me. Kudos to Armenia for making chess a mandatory course.
It was a dark and spotty knight...
Sorry. Couldn't resist.
haha... like the way your stories start :)
Really awesome to see someone so passionate about something, love the videos
Went to private school and we never learned games like chess or backgammon. Had to learn on my own time. Could not agree more, it would be great if this was incorporated into a curriculum.
Damn that is a nice board and set
Thanks, as you can tell, I love it :)
This is a fantastic video :) I don't know much about Chess but this video watch a joy to watch and learn more about the game :D
Excellent video as always my friend. Many thanks.
That is a beautiful chess set. Chess is something that I've been meaning to try and learn now for many years but never get around to. Maybe it could be a new years resolution.
Merry Christmas chycho and a happy new year my friend.
Stu.
Thanks, stu. Merry christmas and a happy new year to you and your loved ones as well. Here is hoping for an amazing 2017 :)
As a future teacher I love this idea of including games like chess and backgammon In curriculum! I grew up playing both games with my family and I still play them daily. Such a great way to get children to think more critically, not to mention fun!
Hi Guy - When I was an Apprentice cabinetmaker I made an Oak / Rosewood Chess board in a coffee table with a draw inside that housed all the pieces and if you took all the peaces out the last one allowed the draw to open further to allow NZ$10,000 to be stored
Amazing items, God bless, wonderful! In Bulgaria chess was not mandatory but really looked up as a national sport until 1990, then it became optional yet wiedley popular in schools. As you know though with the passing of time, things changed. My dad and grandpa used to be great in both backgammon and chess. You're completely right as always that everything connected to rationality is usually dealt with patterns. Backgamon is great as well, as it is the relative opposite of chess. Both ancient games, both creating and forming character and certain viewpoint. Me personally - never been good at both, but hey, there's time.
Thanks for the intimate meditation on simple yet great things. Peace out!
My pleasure, brother, and peace :)
Beautiful set and great video,cheers!
Thanks, brother. Peace :)
Watching a new show “the queens gambit” very very interesting. Inspired me to search this video before bed tonight
This channel is awsome!!
There was no crack it open in this one. I cant sleep now
Love your videos and energy Chycho! :)
:)
More chess videos please!
Definitely love the game :)
I do have at least one more video that I will be doing after going through a few more boxes. I'd like to show you all the pieces and the board/set that we kept from my childhood. It's the wooden one I showed a few pieces of when I was showing my board game collection. I don't think we have all the pieces for it but it is a gem for us. It was bought in Italy in the 60's or 70's, traveled to Iran and then to Canada. That's how much we love it :)
chycho excited for all of it
me too :))
On the 4 move checkmate, after the queen captures the pawn, the bishop next to the queen could block the bishop protecting the queen, BUT the bishop protecting the queen could capture the black bishop, and then its checkmate. Just letting you know. But besides that, GREAT video. I would enjoy more chess videos.
I'll do my best to make a few more, I do love the game, and thanks for the additional info :)
it does not matter if he blocks the bishop, the queen is still checking the king.
Wow, great video. It's funny I purchased the exact same chess set used on eBay which was virtually brand new, except the black pieces were dark green to match the board. This was to replace a cheap board I was using when my teenage son and I played. My goal was to have a nice board to keep set up as you had, I find this will get you to play more often if the board is visible. It would be great if you did another video on moves and strategy. Another game I've been meaning to learn is go, have you ever played it? Thanks Chycho.
Thanks, Joe, love the board and love the game.
As for more chess videos, since putting this out and cracking open the set I've actually started thinking about starting a chess series. It'll be a while though since I have to plan it out and right now I have a lot of my plate but it did get me excited, so for sure I'll do more in the future.
As for Go, no I've never played. At some point though I would like to. Looks like it's a serious contender in terms of pattern recognition when compared to chess.
By the way, may I ask how much the set cost you on ebay? I bet the shipping charges were insane, so heavy.
Love this video till this day. Could you do some more about chess?
At some point we will, for sure, just not sure when.
I would totally play chess with all the time
i think u'll fall in love with the game GO :)
(I'm new to your channel so it's possible you've already done this but) could you do a video about some chess strategies? I love the game but I can never win XD I'd love to learn some moves. Anyways great videos my brother!
Thanks for the love Kody, and welcome to my channel. As for chess strategies, there are way better people to learn chess from than me. I'm just a casual player who really likes the game. One day I do plan on delving deeper into it and when I do, I'll see what I can produce to share what I've learned. Chess and backgammon, which I'm way better at, are well worth mastering that's for sure.
I love how he kept calling the bishop a knight. Other than that, great video.
Omg this is a terrific chess where do I buy one just like it?

Would be cool to see a vid on axes and allies!
I actually have one planned out to do, I'm going to show you guy how we play our alternate rules version. It's super fun.
I have this exact same board
Price?
I'm starting to play chess regularly again....been to long 😏
The chess set was $65 and shipping was $16. I purchased this in 2014. I moved and haven't set it up in a year, but you helped rekindle my affair with the game. Also some, a great way to spend time with family. I just watched your dice probability video. Is there a way to get your graph and chart you used in the video? I give you tons of credit for making all these great videos, it must take up a lot of your time. I do appreciate it brother. Best, Joe
That's a great deal! Think I'll check out some chess sets on ebay and see what I find, the only downside is that shipping in Canada is very expensive.
As for the probability video and the graphs, I do have a couple of them on my article on craps. It's a write-up I did a few years before making the video. You should be able to find them on my site here: chycho.blogspot.ca/2013/05/the-seduction-of-dice-philosophy-of.html
And my pleasure regarding the content. They do take a lot of time but they help to keep my creative juices flowing as well as keeping me sharp, so it's a win-win :)
Only thing missing is a glass of 🍷
How about some liqueur: ruclips.net/video/Fbm6S56WlQw/видео.html
:)
Fantastic vid Chycho! More instructive/demonstrative ones plz! Makes for better ASMR.
Or you could throw us all for a loop and do, "Rally Climbing Mount Washington at Record Speed (ASMR)""
But that would be a little tough to pull off.
haha... wait until you see what I have coming up next... lol... it doesn't involve mountains, but it does involve cliffs :))
And will do regarding more chess videos. They will get me back into the game so it should be a lot of fun.
lmao, man you weren't kidding. Very interesting, thanks for the new upload and the update!
hehe... fun vid to put together that's for sure, and important. Personally I can't wait to get the math done for these. fun fun :)
Nice video! With the way you speak, you are like the Bob Ross of the chess world. I just kept waiting for you to say something along the lines of... "in chess there are no mistakes, just happy little accidents".
haha... think I'll need to incorporate that phrase into another chess video :)
ps. thanks for the complement as well, huge respect for Bob Ross.
Wait, hold up, I pretty sure I've seen the same comment in a yasser seirawan video. wtf?
Whats your star sign?
You sound like the guy who voiced Prismo in Adventure Time
The first two seasons of Adventure Time were fantastic. Looks like Prismo was introduced at the end of season 4. Were the later episodes as good?
chycho I know I'm not OP but I would say it's worth a watch. I prefer the first two seasons but nonetheless it's a fun show.
Cool, when I have some down time I'll give them a try. Thanks.
Damn, that's beautiful...
My grade four teacher taught the class chess and set aside time a few time for people To play.
What is the price of this set?
I paid a lot at the time, I think it was around $250 US.
How much did that cost at the time?
It cost me about $350 back then... Yikes! ... well worth it though :)
I can tell.
I think I have to watch the checkmate sequences at least a second time to fully understand them :-) One interesting game-related article which I read recently is www.wired.com/2016/05/google-alpha-go-ai/ Lee Sedol, the grandmaster who lost to AlphaGo, is quoted by Wired in another piece with: "There is chess in the western world, but Go is incomparably more subtle and intellectual". (Of course he's not completely unbiased!) I like that the article on AlphaGo points out that AI superiority in "perfect information games" also plants a seed for human master players to become even better. So it's not all doom and gloom!
I remember reading articles like this when Deep Blue beat Kasparov back in the late 90's. There were some amazing dialogue during that time, I'm sure the same is going on in Asia right now with the Go community. Fun times.
Indeed, wonderful times, at least in certain regards! I can't help but bring this up because I find it very exciting: www.nytimes.com/2016/12/14/magazine/the-great-ai-awakening.html It's about how Google used neural networks to dramatically improve the quality of Translate.
Nice find, I'll give that one a read later today I think. On that note, I've had some interest in AI and transhumanism for some time and three programs that I've really enjoyed and I think have done an amazing job covering the subject have been: 1) Black Mirror, 2) West World, and 3) Humans. I highly recommend these three shows.
Another great show and tell video, sir :)
There's something a little bit different in the audio, seems like the treble is a little bit higher than your previous videos. I'm not sure, I might be wrong.
Thanks, brother. As for the sound, I was having some issues, thought I dealt with it. Hopefully it doesn't persist, if so, please let me know and I'll see about an upgrade to my hardware... might be time... also there was a semi storm out side, lots of wind, that could have contributed.
I'm in homeschool
lol see marble chess set 4:20
Ok, bur get a bigger table
I always thought the king goes on his colour?
I'm pretty sure that the queen is placed on the same color and the king is on the opposite color.
chycho I agree with Raoh, thats how i know it
I'm from england so could be different rules seeing as our silly country still has a king! Maybe its different in the US or other places.
Raoh the Queen goes on the D-file, from whites perspective the fourth file from left, and from blacks persoective the 5th file from the left. Also, with a white square in the bottom right, the queens has to be on its own color square. Kind regards, a chess player :-)
Chycho is definitely right. I play a lot and it's defo Queen on her colour
akhber
hey chycho are you Irish?
There is got to be some Irish in me, I can feel it: chycho.blogspot.ca/2014/01/graffiti-and-murals-from-northern.html :)
...my first language though is Armenian.
why you think board games should be part of education system i didn't watch the video that you speak about it
For many different reasons, one of them, of course, being that the underlying rules for most games is mathematics. You also learn economics, politics, risk management, finance, strategy, diplomacy, etc... you could build an amazing curriculum centered on games, and one day i would love to slowly see this happen, if it's not out there already that is.
Things you are 5:13
Your voice is very relaxing and this video is excellent ASMR, but the chess is very much not so. Why on EARTH would white play 1.e4 e5 .d3? Nothing is attacking that pawn yet! I was curious and checked it in my database. In its 900'000 recorded games that open with e4 e5, d3 was played less than 1400 times, and in those white almost always lost. It's a terrible move.
And that's not even mentioning the fact that you're talking about the scholor's mate here. Someone would have to be essentially literally brand new to chess to not know that the f pawn is weak. Nobody gets mated that way. NOBODY.
If you ever do want to play chess, you could always visit your local club. A great thing about chess is that players can be objectively rated numerically according to their skill using the ELO system. It's nice sometimes to know what one's skill level is and how much it improves over time. You could also play online. Millions of people do. I should just warn you that if you try cheeky shit like the scholor's mate you will: 1) piss people off and 2) lose every time, because playing the Queen out that early is almost an instant loss.
