    Hi Dr. Megan. I took Prednisone for three months because of a respiratory infection which just about shut down my lungs. I started with a medrol pack the first month, then when my lungs didn't improve I had 20mg x 5 days, then 10mg x 5 days then 5 mg x 5 days. I started to improve when suddenly I had a relapse and my lungs were very congested with expiratory wheezing and long oxygenation so my doctor put me on the last Prednisone taper the same as the previously mentioned one. Finally, my lungs opened up completely and I had completely recovered, with normal breathing, no shortness of breath and 100 pulse oxygenation on room air. I was happy to be able to breath but now I've noticed that I can't walk without limping, my right leg is markedly weaker than my left leg. I have no bone, nor joint pain; no numbness or radiculoparhy, just weakness in my right leg. I am desperate to regain complete strength in my right leg. I was on Prednisone for only three months. I think this is steroid induced myopathy. I have been completely off the Prednisone for two months now. Will this right leg weakness be permanent??? I have be doing strength training with light weights on my right leg. The has no pain, just weakness. I just want to know if this weakness is transient, since I was on a short, decreased tapering dose of Prednisone. Dr. Megan, will my leg regain full function, especially if I'm not on Prednisone anymore. Please advise. Thank you. I'm a Nurse Practitioner also but I am worried about this myopathy. Thank you for your help.

    I went to the emergency room for back pain, and it was the worst experience of my life. First of all, it is the worst emergency room in my city, and they gave me the wrong medication. I received three injections, one of which was methylprednisolone. They gave me an entire vial. About four to six hours later all hell broke loose. My blood pressure, which is almost always normal, was at 165 / 99 upon waking up the next morning, and my heart rate 120 at rest.I was sweating, had violent mood swings, had crying spells, had panic attacks, my arms and on my biceps and my face and my chest where scorching red, so I knew it was time to go to another emergency room. When I got there my BP was 180/100 heart rate 125. Doctor told me I had no business being given that medication for back pain and they are at fault for putting me through that hell. He said rest for 24-48 hours and I WILL get better, and I did. I just wanted to share my nightmare experience with that drug

    I have a long complicated story with allergies, asthma and living on a farm with lots of haydust and graindust and mold. My grandpa was a old time hardass and he had a fifth of whiskey downstairs in the basement for twenty years. When it got bad he'd give me a shot a night and said it'll cure you or kill you. Get tough mentality. Grandma took me to the doctor and they gave me these packs of six,five,four,three,two,one. And when it was done,I felt like Superman. This is how normal people feel, I said. Throughout life, everyone said I outgrew it. But was never right. Some of what helped was the get tough approach but more was education. I learned to shower as soon as I get out of it. Change clothes often. Wash bedsheets often. Play the wind in the field, etc. Only had to take these packs a half a dozen times in my life when it got to bad for me to function. Each time I would beg for a steady diet of this stuff and each time was told that it could be bad for me. We'll, I'm 53 now and the toughness is starting to wear thin. I told my doctor, why do I have to wait in misery for weeks when I know ahead when it's coming.(it actually causes anxiety too which adds to it). This time they actually gave me a script a few months ago for emergency. I was looking at it today and it says predisone 20 milligrams. Take two daily. And it has one refill. I guess I should have ask more questions. I watched some videos just now and settled on yours because you actually used it and have in the field experience. O' who am I kidding? Also because your beautiful and gentle and nice. Those healing qualities. So what do you think? What is short term? I generally spend a week or two in the haydust twice a year. By the end of the first week, I'm beyond congested and tired. By the second week, it feels like I'm gonna die. Could I start taking one a day when I first start, up it to two, and then back to one? Does it do any good to take one,one day, then stop just for bad days? They have tried just about every pill there is and it's like nothing. No effect either way. The only thing that has ever worked is these and the inhalers. But the inhalers seem to dry out my lungs and make me feel worse. Sorry so long but I had one more thing. I read in another comment about the receptor responsible for water regulation. I'm skinny and always dehydrated. I actually do the opposite of everything they say on TV about dieting and I feel better. I burn thousands of calories per day. We used to take maybe one bottle of water to the Hayfield and be fine. My brother and all the help still do. But these last few years, I go though a case of water a day and can't seem to get enough. And have to snack constantly or my blood sugar goes to nothing and I'm done. The side effects you described seem to be what I want. Water retention and higher blood sugar. Any knowledge or past experience with another patient would be appreciated. J

      @PrednisonePharmacist  4 года назад

      Hi Henry, looks like you've tried just about everything! I'd say your plan makes sense. If it's only a week or two each year, then that's not too bad. They always say, "Use the lowest possible dose for the shortest possible time." If you're using it to prevent the worst symptoms just those few weeks, then that would meet that goal.

    • @PrednisonePharmacist
      @PrednisonePharmacist  4 года назад

      Also, I'd get your blood sugar situation checked out by a doctor. Even though it may seem impossible, some of those symptoms you describe could be a sign of diabetes.

    • @PrednisonePharmacist

      The difference is a few molecules, but really it's just one is used in the USA (prednisone) and the other is used in other parts of the world (prednisolone). They are almost indistinguishable from side effects, how long they last, doses, etc.

It’s been 6months since I stopped using my medicine and my face went down a lot since when I was using it but nothing like when I never used the medicine. Yes, Medrol is pretty much the same as prednisone (the difference is negligible). I took the 6 day pack of Medrol a few weeks ago. These side effects are mostly from long term treatment, not this. I actually lost about 10 pounds and a lot of swelling went down. I have inflammatory problems, so I guess I retain fluids. The tapering dose, assuming you have the triangle looking pack, is to prevent adrenal problems. It really helped my arthritis, but it came back once I stopped taking it. Be careful, I mainly noticed that I bruised easily, and that hasn't gone away yet.

      I'm on prednisolone for Polymyalgia. So hard tapering off them ,down to 2mg having to drop very slowly .
      Your advise is so true especially keep off the sugar ,it gives me massive problems with no sleep and anxiety.
      I take high dose of vit D3 ,calcium and magnesium which has helped enormously with the anxious feelings .
      I hope you did not take offence with the accent remark ,its so nice to hear compared to those robotic voices .

    I’m. 22 n I was prescribed predslone eye drops with restasis for dry eyes for 2 weeks could I have all these bad side effects at my age for this short Time and low dose of only 1 drop a day I’m really concerned?

    • @PrednisonePharmacist
      @PrednisonePharmacist  4 года назад

      The eye drops aren’t likely to cause side effects anywhere but the eyes. It’s possible to cause a tiny bit of blood pressure changes, but unlikely. Especially for only 2 weeks, you’re unlikely to have any problems at all. Talk to your doctor if you’re concerned.

    Dear Dr. Megan, I really like your posts, but I have to disagree with you on this point. Cortisone-induced WATER and FAT RETENTION can be IRREVERSIBLE!!! My doctor has told me that I am in the 5 percent whose water retention does not go away. I developed severe water retention under my eyes and on my cheekbones when I took prednisolone for 17 days. That was 15 months ago, and the water retention has actually gotten worse during that time. My face is ruined, I look bloated and ugly and suffer from severe depression because of it. Please mention this in your posts. Many people are prescribed cortisone totally unnecessarily and without benefit for the underlying indication, with the only result that cortisone causes damage. Thank you in advance and best regards from Germany.

    Why don’t doctors tell you these things when you are suddenly stuck in hospital with high dose steroids dripping into your arm? I have met with three doctors in the last month and NOT ONE has talked about mitigating the side effects!!!!! I had to stay on pill steroids when I got out of hospital. I have to see one more specialist this week. I wonder what she will say.

    I have stage 4 metastatic melanoma. I was put on high dosage of prednisone to get rid of a rash from my immno-therapy (obdivo, yervoy) . My doctor tells me If I beat the cancer I will have to stay on prednisone for life. Getting the right level is a daily challenge now, I am on 10ml, somedays more depending how I feel, but the prednisone will eventually kill me, right?

    • @PrednisonePharmacist
      @PrednisonePharmacist  2 года назад

      Not necessarily. People live decades with prednisone. If you are only on 10mg, then that’s a fairly low dose. If you beat the cancer, prednisone isn’t probably going to be the cause of your death.

    hi
    Am I at risk for any permanent damage when taking 20mg twice a day for only five days?
    I broke out in hives the other day from an unknown source and predisone was given to me to fight the reaction
    After seeing all the side effects im not sure if id like to finish the prescription.
    also my muscles are sore, but I also had a flu shot recently so maybe that's the reason for that..
    is short term use putting me at risk for anything?

    • @PrednisonePharmacist
      @PrednisonePharmacist  4 года назад +5

      Dogenzaka Goddess hello!
      It’s unlikely for only 5 days to cause permanent damage.
      There are risks at only 5 days. But the #1 mistake people make is stopping their prescription of prednisone cold turkey. Always work with your doctor to stop taking it slowly. Otherwise it can cause adrenal insufficiency. Once you’ve started, you’ve got to finish.

    • @PrednisonePharmacist
      @PrednisonePharmacist  5 лет назад +1

      For sure. That exact thing happened to me. Prednisone goes to the mineralocorticoid receptor which is responsible for water regulation in the body. This is one of the reasons people gain weight while on prednisone. Watch my movie "how prednisone causes water weight gain" to understand more. ruclips.net/video/EiCrkc_vkZM/видео.html
