    Well, you were asleep when you came to my hometown, Greensboro, NC. You got your shower after departing Danville, Virginia, which is 1 hour from Greensboro. The Crescent is notorious for being late. Most of us, from Charlotte to NY (Moynihan Station) travel on the Carolinian. It's a longer ride but it's normally on time, and it departs for NY at 8:40a, and arrives from NY at 6:30p. The last time I rode Amtrak from NY, the train left at 6:05a. Some of us paid close attention to our ticket. Over 100 Carolinian passenger's missed the train. The train usually leaves at 7:05a from NY, but they were doing a trial run, by connecting the Palmetto, and the Carolinian, and disconnecting in Rocky Mount, NC. I could only imagine what those Carolinian passenger's went through.

    Oh, man flashbacks! Once the Crescent was late and I was taking the SEPTA Regional Rail Train(Wilmington-Newark Line) from Ridley Park, PA into 30th Street. Crescent had the priority, so our train had to sit in the station for 15 minutes. The train, of course, becomes packed and then breaks down twice on the way into 30th Street.

    Like everyone else; I love your videos. Your comment about overhearing the discussion about the dispatcher messing with Amtrak is funny. A friend of mine is a technician for metro and they sometimes work in conjunction with both Amtrak and NS and he tells ne about how they each will mess with each other. It's only the customer that feels the blunt of it. I guess that's life. But being a gentleman of leisure, I'm never in a rush anyway. 🤪

I understood we had that problem, too. I live on the Sunset Limited line ~ NOLa to L. A. ~ it is but one track in Louisiana. This is often given as the reason for the train being so very late.

    I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your train odyssey videos. You realize that people like me don't want to see shaky 5-second scenes and pictures of the conductor's shoes. You actually put the camera to the window and keep the scene running to let me see exactly what you are seeing and tell me from the Garmin what it is and where it is. Some people would find that boring; I find it captivating. It makes me feel as though I am in the roomette and not you. When I was growing up my mother was a hopeless drunk. Sorry, but the word 'alcoholic' doesn't work here; she ruined my life growing up and riding the train was my best escape. Of course, I also played 'train' as much as possible. I'm not a train geek who can tell you the numbers of all the engines and their horsepowers, etc. Riding the train has been my happy place for the past 72 years. Once a month my wife and I go 25 miles to Deland, FL to meet the Silver Meteor. Most people would think this is stupid, but the station agent, David, understands perfectly. If I were single I would be doing exactly what you're doing and maybe there would be a gray-headed fat man somewhere who would get to look at the scenery going by whenever he wanted to and smile. By the way, I also really appreciate your responses to my comments that are written clearly, completely, and with appropriate paragraphs, spelling, and punctuation -- something that somehow has fallen by the wayside since we were in school and learned how to communicate with normal people. Although my career was at the unemployment office in Ohio, my degree is in EE. So you can see how much I appreciate communicating with someone else who speaks my language. I hope you never give this up and when you've finally taken all the trips possible, start over and take them all again, but sit on the other side this time! (And always remember, if you write your software properly you don't have to go to the plant to correct it.)

    Hey, I got an inportant question for ya. I imagine a train, or any vehicle for this matter, can carry only a very limited supply of water. What if...I shower too long on an Amtrak train? Would my car run outta water? Would the entire train run outta water? I mean, it's not like there's a tanker car full of water attached to the train, right? If I got the water running for thirty minutes, would that be too long? How 'bout an hour? What should be my cutoff point be? Five minutes? Does Amtrak its tell passengers how long they are allowed to shower?

    • @youtuuba
      @youtuuba  4 года назад

      IAmtrakted 2U, I have never heard any AMTRAK employee mention water restrictions before or during trips. I imagine that the majority of water use in each car is the shower (I believe that most coach cars don't have showers, but I have heard that at least some do); on about half the sleeper cars I have been on, the water in the shower starts when a button is pressed, and runs for longer than I need to take my shower before automatically shutting off, in some others the button causes about 30 seconds of water to flow, and another button press is required to get more water, and still others seem to have the button bypassed, so just the water temperature handle also turns the water on and off. The showers are not like in my house, and are actually fairly low-flow, but still adequate. It also seems that passengers in the sleeper cars and using the showers are fairly courteous and considerate, and try to get in and get out as fast as possible, since there is just the one shower for most passengers in that sleeper car.
      Having said that, I have never encountered a situation where a particular passenger car ran out of water. It is my guess that each passenger car has its own water tank; I don't know if there is any provision for interconnecting car-to-car to pump water where it is needed (I doubt it). But then, railroad cars are very large, and there is a lot of room underneath for things like large water tanks. Since the main water users must be the shower and the tiny bathroom sinks (the toilets are more like those on airplanes, and use very little water), I gather that the usage is far less than the storage capacity. I have seen certain cars having their water topped off at longer station stops, usually when the locomotive(s) is being fueled. Somebody will walk to a car, unreel a hose from a storage area, and stick it into a valve on the side of the passenger car. I have NOT seen any time when every car on the consist gets topped up like that at the same station stop. Apparently, AMTRAK has some ability to gauge how much water is still in each car's tank, and top off those that need it. Or maybe they just take turns topping off different cars at different station stops.
      If anyone know the real info regarding this, please share......

      @@youtuuba Amtrak, being Amtrak, can actually run out of water if they incur significant delays in between refilling stops. I've been on a trip when it happened. • @youtuuba
      @youtuuba  4 года назад

      Kenny, you need to think this through. The windows can be scratched, and should not be dry-wiped be or squeegeed to avoid damages. So the passenger would need to bring not only a LONG handled squeegee (to reach the high train windows), somehow fitting that into the luggage or hand carrying it everywhere on the trip, which probably involves more than just the train trip portion. AND the passenger would need to bring a supply of soapy water in order to not be dry wiping the windows. This is really very unrealistic. Also, AMTRAK would most likely prohibit it for any number of fairly obvious reasons.

      Shannon Raleigh, you are basing your assumption of noise on a very inaccurate method of measurement. Actual perceived noise when a person is there is quite different from perceived noise when listening to a recording. This is called psychoacoustics.

      J Smith, I thought that I mentioned this in the video. I was actually trying to get to Richmond, but the Crescent does not go there, so I would have to get off and wait, possibly for hours, to catch a different train going to Richmond. Secondly, this trip was part of my Train Odyssey, and as such I wanted to take as much of the Crescent route as possible given my time constraints. As originally scheduled (no delays) I figured that I could get to either DC or Philadelphia and still have time to drive back to Richmond on schedule. The final decision on where to get off was determined by which rental car deal I could get. Turned out that a rental from Phil 30th Street station, dropping off several days later at Richmond airport was considerably less expensive than other options.

    You seem to keep putting your camera where the air-con is blowing on it, thus producing that horrible rattling noise on the microphone. -- - - And I thought that the roads in England were rough!!

      I disagree, and it is my video or my trip, so it is my way, not your way.

    This guy drives me absolutely nuts. IDK about anyone else, but I THOUGHT I'd be able to actually SEE the train ride...you know, the scenery, places of interest, etc. But all this guy wants to do is show us his GPS and his toilet ! Every time it gets to some pretty scenery, he goes right back either to his laptop or his baggage. I don't get it.

      The Snodly, what video do you think you are commenting on? You mention a laptop computer, which is not in this video (I know, since I took the video and I had no notebook computer on the trip). You mention that I keep showing the toilet...that is not true. You think the video should be about the scenery......the video is about the whole experience of this train trip, not just the scenery. And if you bothered to watch and listen with an open mind instead of a chip on your shoulder, you would realize that the "Crescent" is NOT a scenic trip. I cannot create scenery that does not exist....most of this route's "scenery" consists of trees flashing by just outside the train video.

      @@youtuuba It may have been a tablet or your phone, but I tuned in to watch the train trip, not your luggage or the toilet or your GPS. If I go to a restaurant and order a pizza, I guess you're saying I should be happy when they bring me a club sandwich instead. SMH

    Amtrak, is not doing a very good job on there cleaning [ hope your roomette is cleaner than the windows ] that is no way to run a business.....

      How are you evaluating the cleaning (I assume you meant "their cleaning")? It would be pretty difficult to tell just from watching the video(s). But I agree that my main complaint is that it seems nobody is tasked with washing the windows anymore before each trip starts. Certainly I have noticed on train trips I have taken repeatedly over the years, trains that used to get window washings two or three time during the trip, especially before very scenic sections, no longer get that treatment.
      It is no secret that AMTRAK is strapped for cash due to Congress cutting their budget, and they have a mandate to serve certain sectors and areas, and that probably means that they can't just increase their ticket and carriage prices any old way they might want to. So, something has to go, and apparently it is how often the windows get cleaned and whether certain trains keep hot meal service.
