A Train Odyssey 6, Train 1, AMTRAK "Capitol Limited" Part 1

- This is the first of two parts of my video documentary on AMTRAK's "Capitol Limited" train from Chicago's Union Station to Washington, DC Union Station. I am calling this trip "Train 1", and it is the first of three train trips on my "Train Odyssey 6" that also includes the AMTRAK "Silver Star" (Train 2) and "Silver Meteor" (Train 3), both of which run between Washington, DC and Miami, Florida. So, overall there are six videos in this series.
Due to the late-in-the-day departure of this train from Chicago, which means there is not much train video available, I have "padded" this video with a visit to the Sears Tower (Willis Tower) "The Ledge". If you want to skip right to the train part, just fast forward.
As part of the same overall trip, I will have separate videos on various attractions, including a "Bridge Odyssey" for the Florida Keys, and a visit to the Florida Everglades National Park.

AWESOME!! I feel like I willed this one into existence because I've been thinking alot lately about when the next adventure might arrive. Your train odyssey videos have been a constant source of peace for me in dealing with several mental health issues over the past 4 years. Not sure what I would've done without them. I can't wait to watch this one!! Thank you for sharing your adventures with us. They mean a great deal to myself and to everyone who watches them.

Youtuuba.....I think you should consider taking an 'anniversary' tour 2021on "Empire Bldg'. from Chicago to Seattle as you did a few years ago, day or so a day after Christmas! Hopefully another trip will go a little smoother then the rememberable fiasco you had! Plus train travel is the BEST when there's snow and cold out! CCC Austin,TX

I love the lower level. I rode the California Zephyr to Chicago and it was awesome! You have the huge shower and restroom right outside of your roomette!
Traveling with TeddyG, well, the only Superliner lower level room that has the shower and toilets "right outside" is the handicapped accessible room. For the four lower level Roomettes and the Family Bedroom, the shower and toilets are down the hall.....
@@youtuuba true. I didn’t mean right outside but in comparison to the upper level roomettes no stairs to go down. Just step outside of your room and down the hall! Planning a trip around the mid to western United States on Amtrak. California Zephyr to Emeryville from Chicago . Then up the west coast to Seattle. Then the empire builder back to Chicago.
I love your video style. Captions explaining complex details, voiceovers when available. Plenty of video on the journey. Great videos! Also I visited the Willis Tower a few years ago, the view was great but the express elevator really impressed me, what a feat of engineering, and it is run every day all day.

The Silver Service trains that you take to and from Florida are my "home" routes that run through my home state of NC. The Silver Star is what takes the western branch via Raleigh and Columbia. The Silver Meteor is what takes the eastern leg south of Rocky Mount, NC to Savannah via Fayetteville, NC and N. Charleston, SC. The Silver Meteor takes a slightly quicker route up and down the East Coast. The Silver Star, what we sometimes call here the "Silver Starvation" because Amtrak removed the dining car from its consist, also makes a side trip to and from Tampa on its trip to Miami. I've always been a big fan of your Train Odyssey videos and watch them often.

I have been following your channel for around 2 years now. I really enjoy your channel. This train Odyssey 6 will be a piece of Americana. Traveling during the Pandemic, Coming from the North East where there were very strict mask guidelines. Then coming here to Florida where it is pretty much all open. P.S. Don't forget that Red Cap service is available if you're not up to walking, I use a cane and it is quite a hike without the service. Use Red Caps for seven years,, great service.

Congratulastions with your enginering retirement ! Chicago skyline very impresive to see. Union Station layout little complicated with several seperate area´s, historic parts like great hall at least saved, Newyork Penn station replacing new stationhall is a great improvement. Summer busy time with corona messres extra weighted. The Cardenal was maybe the last missing train mentoned. Steak deep fride, amtrak should return to fresh meals, snack and drinks little. Nice trip !

So happy you've been able to do another odyssey. These have been sorely missed during my U.K. lockdown.
I believe all long distance trains that go north of Washington DC on the North East Corridor are the only viewliner regulated trains. If you are familiar with the Auto train that runs between Virginia and Florida, that is a superliner double decker train.

I went to the top of the Sears Tower, my first time in Chicago in 1985 or 86. Just had an old Polaroid camera. Finally made it back to downtown Chicago in 2009. I had dinner in the Signature room of the John Hancock building.

You are correct! The one you were pointing out that branches off the Capitol Limited Route and goes off to the north from Pittsburgh is the Keystone between Philly and Pittsburgh

25:58 that's my Metra Electric University Park line going south, on the CN / IC tracks.
27:55 the nonprofit I volunteer with has a co -work space in the red building.
I have worked all over the loop, a variety of "permanent" or temp jobs. Including in the Sears Tower ( Metropolitan Club, 66th and 67th floor)
As well as the Mid -Day Club in the Chase building 29:30
I think they were on the 56th floor.
I also temped for JPMorgan & Co, *before* they merged with Chase, and they were located in a building diagonally across Wacker from the Sears Tower.
I got to do the Sears Tower observation deck when I was about 10. Since that was back in the 80s, they did not have the ledges.
I watched the Trump Tower being built while I was working next door at the Wrigley Building, where I often served lunch to VIPs including the king of gum himself.

I would really like to suggest to you. Another breathtaking train trip. First. Travel on Amtrak down to Bellingham Washington. Then go hop onto the Alaska Marine Highway Ferry up to Skagway Alaska. Then go on the White Pass and Yukon Route up to Lake Bennett and Carcross Yukon. Canada.. it is a narrow guage.
I’m going to DC from Chicago in March and hope to take the Cardinal one way, the Capital back.
My wife and I took the Capitol Limited to DC 5yrs ago. It was very bumpy at night, going east.
Outstanding!! I remember visiting the then Sears Tower in Oct. '93 before it became an attraction. I caught 2 elevators to get to that floor & there were no crowds nor gift shop. There used to be a luggage locker room off the main hall in the train station where one could store luggage during extended layovers. It was pricey but more secure than leaving baggage in an unattended area. I suppose these lockers were eliminated after 9/11. I've always traveled Westbound on the Capitol Ltd. from DC & never saw Pittsburgh in daylight from a train. The downside of having a downstairs Roomette is being at track level & having to navigate stairs to get to/from the Lounge & Dining cars. The upside is you have immediate access to the shower & restrooms. I'm hoping these cars get interior updates soon. They look much like they did 30 yrs ago. It's still an enjoyable experience. Did you contact Amtrak after having the unfortunate experience of not having heat in your car in December 1-2 yrs ago? I wrote them a letter after the car I was in ran out of water for 6 hours in '16. They sent me a voucher & a letter of apology, but the voucher had already expired when I received it! I didn't pursue it further. Well done video!!

Lots of interesting sights in Chicago on that tall tower! Train stations, O’hare, former meiggs field, McCormick place, Lake Michigan, Trump hotel, Chicago River etc, but what about the Navy pier, or could you see it from there?

One of the reasons the Capital Limited runs Superliners is so they can shuttle needed cars or repair cars to connect with the Autotrain

Another great train video Paul. Did look to see soldier field from the tower part of the video, but I suppose it was obscured by other buildings. Would we have seen it if you'd been on the upper level on the other side of the train? Only asking as a very long distance bears fan.
Enjoyed seeing your trip up the Sears tower and the ledge, braver man than me, I'm petrified of heights, so you wouldn't get me onto those glass viewing platforms.
Would love to see some more videos in and around Chicago, boat trips, museums etc, you make the walk throughs enjoyable with your commentary and off hand remarks.

I also went to the Sears/Wills Tower before my train trip to Reno in 2019. I figured that I had better do it while I had the chance, unlike in 1993 when I decided NOT to go up into the World Trade Center. I thought that I could always do it at some other time.
at mark 137 on the right side of the train you will see Chicago's 95th street bridge whom the Blues Brothers Jumped in the Bluesmobile
when you are walking around the stations etc. Do you have a hat cam?
The reason the meteor and silver star have the shorter view liner cars is the over head catenary for the electric locomotives north of Washington to Boston

One small correction: When referring to the Silver Meteor and Silver Star on the map in Chicago, they actually originate in NYC, not DC. You may have just meant that you would join or leave the trains in DC, but that's not the way I understood it.
Lo-Res Gamer, throughout this Train Odyssey, I tried to distinguish between the overall route of the Silver Star and Silver Meteor and the part I was taking, but I was not entirely consistent in my terminology, so I agree it might be confusing if sampled with minimal context. But if a viewer watches the entire videos, by the end they should come to understand, through my clarifications, that both trains have New York City as their northern terminus.

Looks like some improvement since the last one in Chicago.
You're wondering which route the City of New Orleans takes (which also applies to eastbound routes , like if you're going to New York for example). Around 17th st, there's a junction to an East-West line, the 18th Street flyover. You can see it on the map at 1:23:43. Once you're on that, headed east, it then merges onto the southbound CN line underneath McCormick Place. Then, continue Southward down that line which is also shared with Metra Electric Line.
1:23:50 I shot this identical stretch of the route while riding through last summer. It appears in one of my videos -- although mainly as scenery to accompany my voice-over commentary ( about the Kyle Rittenhouse case).
Just subscribed! Love these videos. I wanted your opinion, youtuuba! Some of these routes, you just expect to see great things and have a great experience based on the route/train's reputation. Others, well, there just isn't much to see. The sunset limited, its pretty much dirt or brush for most of it. My personally favorite, as with many is the Cal Zephyr. The pleasant surprise for me was the Southwest Chief. The scenery on the west end at least was very nice through Arizona and New Mexico. Of the X to Chicago Long Distance trains in the west, The Chief tends to be a little more reliable on-time wise than the others. But my question is, which route would fit your billing for "didn't expect much, but was pleasantly surprise" category?

Enjoyed mini-tour of downtown Chicago but felt too much time spent on Willis tower. Like long videos if focused on the scenery. But would like more attention paid to food choices/options etc. When on dining car trains

Is there a place in DC for you to leave your luggage? I’m taking the cap limited/silver meteor from chi to Orlando and I’m hoping to not have to carry my luggage around DC while I explore
Joe Moe, I presume you mean at the DC Union Station, not just anywhere in DC. Yes, this station has a baggage storage area, and signs point the way; it is on the lower level near one end if the hall. I think when you get off the Capitol Limited, and make your way to the main hall, turn right, walk to the end, and turn right again....unless they moved it. I hsve left bags there while I walk to museums on the National Mall.

Union Station appears to be as quiet as the downtown area. I recall in one of your earlier train odyssey videos you mentioned you had a favorite shop at Union Station where you purchased snacks for your train trips. Just curious ...., was that shop and others in Union Station able to survive Covid or have many of them gone out of business?
