I first thought the keyboard itself costs $400 to replace until you explained more. I bet you they replace the whole bottom assembly because the keyboard is riveted, unlike the retina keyboards that holds by screws. And the battery, its attached by adhesive and it is difficult to remove. So it all makes sense other than Apple replacing your recalled keyboard for another recalled keyboard. It's still better than paying.
Yeah it really isn't a bad deal considering its a real pain in the ass when it does happen. I own a 2019 13" MBP that I bought at the end of October 2019. Its covered under the program and I have AppleCare+, so its nice to know I'm covered until October 2022 for the MacBook itself and covered until October 2023 for the keyboard replacement. Which considering it replaces the entire top case (keyboard, touchbar, trackpad, battery, palm rests) can extend the life of the laptop for many more years to come. Not gonna lie, I'll be pushing it hard that 3rd year to make sure I can take advantage before the time runs out. Knowing my luck, I'll have something happen after 4.5 years of owning it.
My MacBook Pro 16 2019 model goes into Safeboot if I turn On the Mac after 5 hours . After restart from safeboot it works fine . Keyboard works fine and no damage at all . Also if I restart or turn it on within 2 hours or 3hrs it works perfectly fine. Any idea why it goes into Safeboot without shift key only after 5 hours ..??
does anyone know if new battery and top case gets replaced in 2022 with keyboard? need to get my keyboard repllaced ASAP but my battery is at 2000 cycles and top panell is bent in the corner really bad... anyone know? allso, do they reset the computer to get this done?
why they dont replace the butterfly keyboards with the new magic keyboard 😞, i love my macbook pro but this keys annoyes me when i typing , if they replace my keyboard this issue will gonna happen again after 1 year later
how much has the battery worn since then. my battery has worn from 106%(new battery has more capacity for some reason) to 100% in JUST 15 cycles. Anyone else seeing same issues???
This was very informative. Thank you. Not sure why you got some negative reviews. - This is not a fix video. Rather it explains how to have Apple fix it for you. The extras he got in his keyboard fix has also been my experience, and standard SOP for Apple since the first MBP I bought way back in 2000.
@@theOriginalDieselDave well all I got was bad news, I had a key fall off from use after years and the bracket under the key button either broke off or fell off. They said that was now considered “accidental damage” and my MacBook Pro is out of warranty so they couldn’t do anything besides charge me full price for a top casing replacement.
Cost was about $400 but I’m wondering if I go through with the repair with the top casing will they replace the battery and trackpad as well since those all go together with this repair.
@@lpflion8168 what ive been told is when replacing the keybored they have to replace the battery because the battery is glued to the bottom of the keybored
I didn’t realize it until testing this video but my computer has a sticky key. I thought it only suffered from the weird unexpected repetition but the caps lock key which I rarely use does feel weird when pushing it compared to the other keys. It’s kind of relieving because the other issue is unexpected so if I would have taken it to the Apple store they’d have said there was nothing wrong with it.
@@hexrise3569 they replaced my top case with the battery and the display because they damaged it while repairing. They thought I would notice that they had damaged it. It might be me though but the space bar feels hard but still works. I've only had it for less than a month and last time I went it took forever. I'll definitely go if it gets worse.
No idea why this video has so many dislikes. My only guess is that some smooth-brained individuals thought it was some sort of tutorial on how to replace their own faulty keyboard? Who knows. Well done, informative, and relatively concise. 👍🏻
It's perfectly understandable that they would have expected a DIY keyboard replacement video, given the title. But yeah, being negative about that misunderstanding is pretty smooth-brained. English is full of ambiguities...
The MacBook is covered for four years from the date of purchase. So it can be replaced an infinite amount of times within those four years. Although I have read stories and watched videos of people getting newer MacBook's due to 2-3 keyboard replacements.
Logan Rodzen I’ve heard that Apple won’t replace the keyboard under the repair program more than twice. They may replace it 3 times if they do what is known as an “exception.” I think with Apple Care+ they will repair it more than 3 times. However, after the second repair, my keyboard breaks, I’ll be asking for a replacement.
@@Michael-zn2jc Do they know when we purchase the device? I bought my MBP 2017 around June 2017, and the key is sometimes sticky now. I want to bring it to AASP, but I just don't want to waste anyone time, including me. Is my mac still eligible?
@@DD-rd2jmit’s based on when you first activated the device. I think there is a way to check your devices warranty status on the apple website. Just make sure 4 years haven’t elapsed. Mine required a 4th repair for the keyboard and they replaced it.
At Tech yeah but I’m not talking about the models with defective keyboards or in warranty. My keyboard is starting to go and I need to change my battery in probably a year
so its the same keyboard with that added membrane, when I went in to submit mine they just told me they're doing it to increase the design life of the product (and doesn't really fix the issue, and if it happens to get spoilt again after 90 days of replacing, they do another complementary replacement). I'm hoping the issue doesn't come up again as ive had my machine for barely 3 years :(
I just got my 2018 MBP keyboard done, and I got a receipt for labor ($79) and flat rate price ($399), and the top case is put down for $0. On apples site I read that it was completely free of charge (as long nothing else was replaced), and I wasn't expecting/can't afford the $478. Is this happening to anyone else?
I’m in this situation right now. My left shift key was basically stuck down and before I took it into my local Apple repair place I had pulled up the shift key to see it there was something under it causing the problem. I ended up breaking the key clip and when I took my laptop in they said it wasn’t covered because I of the broken key and quoted me AU$200 for labour and AU$599 for the part. They also gave me an Apple number to call to ask for an exemption as the reason I broke the key was because I was trying to deal with this “known problem”. It took about 5mins on the phone with Apple to explain my situation and they agreed to cover me under the ‘keyboard service program’ so now I don’t have to pay for anything, not even labour. If your laptop was fine (except the keyboard) you shouldn’t be paying anything.
I tried to get my keyboard repaired and was told that they no longer support the repair for my model. Same model with the oled strip.
My MacBook Pro 2016 is also experiencing this same issue, but it's been 4 years later, can I get extension?
I am trying to call Apple tomorrow.
