Lyrics:
There's a moment in time
And it's stuck in my mind
Way back, when we were just kids
'Cause your eyes told the tale
Of an act of betrayal
I knew that somebody did
Oh, waves of time
Seem to wash away
The scenes of our crimes
For you this never ends
Can you stay strong?
Can you go on?
Kristy, are you doing okay?
A rose that won't bloom
Winter's kept you
Don't waste your whole life trying
To get back what was taken away

"Don't waste your whole life trying to get back what was taken away"
That was all I needed to hear. Thank you.
Isabella Evans that line is like an icicle into my heart. It’s true, it’s good advice, but it’s so difficult to let go of the innocence stolen that I get hung up on in life.
Im still mad that I didn't see my brother when he played Skyrim, accidentally tossed up a shield and thus blocked an arrow. He also did not record it and I want to see that!
It’s an icicle for most. Wounds don’t heal and it’s nature to see what you’ve lost every time you close your eyes. I just wish I would of told her I loved her one last time
This was one of the key teachings of Buddhism. I used to study at a Buddhist school and this was a philosophy that the Buddha teaches. Let go and move on because time cannot be turned backwards and you have so little time to be on this planet, so just live it to the fullest. No matter how dark your life was, there is still light ahead, you just need to let go completely so that you can embrace light.
@@chrisp7110 Indeed! Back then those words rang true. Since then, I have gone through a Major change, a shift in perspective. I dove deep within, healing everything I could reach. Even being able to forgive the one that stole my innocence and childhood. 😊 It no longer consumes me. I am Free.
There is no 'getting it back', but I was able to do something even Better. Forgive and Heal. 💙💚💜
All love to the Kristys out there and hope you've triumphed.
Thanks👍

I was 12 when it happened to me. I'm about to turn 22 and am just now getting help for what was done to me.
Everyone else has said it but the "don't waste your whole life trying, to get back what was taken away", is so true. I can't go back to a point where i was repressing what happened to me and didn't have to deal with all the messiness that comes with dealing with something like that. But you know what, i wasn't doing okay.
We can pretend like we're doing just fine, but i know from my personal experience that once you acknowledge trauma that a lot of behaviors start making sense. Even if you try to run from it, its still in control. It will eat away at you inside and you won't be able to get close to people. But there is a way out.
I know it's hard to believe when you can't see it, but it's true. The person who did this to me will likely never face justice, but I can get my own sense of healing and closure from closing the old wounds.
To whoever is out there and is reading this, you will get through this. It wont be easy, but it'll be for the better in the end.
Thank you Dexter for writing this song. It's given me a lot of comfort even 16 years after you wrote it as i navigate my healing journey.
You are not real
Dexter, I don't know if you read these comments, but I wanted to thank you for pursuing your music. I know you walked away from a Ph.D program and, as I'm pursuing a similar degree, I understand the driving passion it takes to get that far into the sciences. Your music has lifted my life and has made the world a better place. Thank you.
I'm sure you know this by now - but, for the readers - Dexter did go on to finish his PHD in molecular biology in 2017. He didn't have to, but he did it anyway.
I'd love to hang out with him and talk not The Offspring.
You heard of Brian may? Dropped from his PhD in astrophysics in Cambridge to take part in a little known band called Queen, and after their lead singer died, Freddie Mercury, he went back and finished his degree, much like Dexter did!
So Awesome, someone told me this and I never looked into it but damn those are some talented dudes. Truly inspirational
@@LillyP-xs5qe I was going to say the same thing! I'm glad I read the replies first.
Brian May is one of my heroes for so many reasons. (BTW: Did anyone else know that his wife, Anita Dobson has a small - maybe big - role in the current season of Doctor Who? That's 3 doctors that have been mentioned!)

What makes this song so beautiful (and rather heartbreaking at the same time) is that the girl's abuse stuck with Dexter for this long and clearly affected him. We meet so many people in life, and those we meet in school stick with us the longest because we essentially know them for the better part of around 15 years on average. We see them 5 days of the week during the school year. Friends or not... these people will always have a spot in your memories. I cannot think of a single memory from my time in school that would stick to me like the meaning behind this song. And that shows just how a small scale event (one thay affected only one girl) had harnessed itself to Dexter's memories for a lifetime, to where he made a song about it.
I think it happens to more folks than you'd think. Some are just super sensitive to what's happening around them. It's often also a side effect of being a child with a narcissistic parent or abusive parents.
I think a lot of artists (music or otherwise) draw from that well.
I have quite a few memories from 30 & 40 years ago. Which friends had stuff going on at home or some at school. People I barely knew. But, I could sense certain things about people.
I’m grateful my kids are way more sensitive to the plight of others than I was in high school/college. I look back and think about people I was classmates with but never really knew, and I now see some of them were suffering.
I still remember the girl from.my high school who had to lose out on everything after being driven near mad by her family to do what was called the 'suicide 5' or 5 very hard subjects that had public state exams. To get the best results to go to uni etc. Turns out this poor thing who seemed so together, ran school council, was super sporty and won trophies and shit in many sports as well as crushing it in rather hard subjects...
Nearly died of malnutrition thanks to bulimia.
Fucking parents.
I still think about her suffering and misery to this day.
Everything you said it’s true man, this song just so meaningful, it hits really deep everytime I listen to this song.
@Holly Reynolds Super sensitive... to getting *raped* ?
My name is Kristy and this song speaks to me in terms of my life, what I’ve been through and the strong woman I am today. I listen to this song almost everyday, thank you The Offspring
Love you guys 💙
Kristy RDH it’s also my name💜
Hello Kristy
Kristy, are you doing okay now?
Remember, don't waste your whole trying to get back what was taken away.
you are the Kristy in this song?
Hii kristy 2021..🤘
Rip to anyone who is suffering with depression and has commuted suicide may you be at peace
AMEN
Dang that sucks when you even have to commute to commit suicide. I mean aren't there local places to commit suicide?
@@sicsemperevellomortemtyran309 I'm wrong for laughing so hard at that.. anyways, in all seriousness rest in peace
I'm 22 and just now dealing with (instead of keeping it suppressed) being assaulted when I was 15. I haven't heard this song in years. I needed this. Thank you.
Brittney, are you doing okay?
You are strong and worthy. That bastard won't have a peaceful life and afterlife.
brittney please dont suppress it, my wife did for 13 years and now im a 34 widower with 3 kids, talking, opening up, evening braking down isnt weakness.
Beside Green Day's Wake me up when September ends and Blink 182 stay together for the kids, this song is one of 3 punk rock songs that can make me crying every time I heard them.
And yes, there's stories behind my tears.
These are great. Also Hold On by Good Charlotte is just as good as these with a similar message.
Those songs are masterpieces
Agree..... Sum41 with u .... Brother .. so sad...
I mean they all great... But they ain't punk mate, they actually can play the instruments, all 3 songs are more alternative rock or grange, punk is more like the clash, buzzcocks, sex pistols, toy dolls...
Untitled by simple plan too
Don‘t waste your whole life trying to get back what was taken away. That line saved me 🙏🏼
The saddest and most gut wrenching part of this song is the comments section filled with way too many people who can relate. Me too comments section. Me too.
Thats the beauty of music.
Not only is it relateable to so many across borders, but often it put words to our trauma and struggles
We find someone like ourself in these, someone to give us that hug we needed (when things were at their darkest), music is that invicible Bond that bring us together and lift us up to a brigther place
miss music like this
ry4nx , miss people listening to this music... :v
I heard this like 14 years ago, this song nevers comes out of my head.
My hubby found this song a couple of months before he passed away 😢... Now I'm listening to it thinking of you
This song is awesome, but at the same time it's so sad.
Yesssssssss
This song deserves more recognition than it has. I remember when it came out I only heard it once on the radio and couldn't find out who sang it for ages.
This song reminds me of my friend who was raped in the fall of 2014 when we were 14. We managed to put the person responsible in prison for the rest of his life starting in August 2015. I can't even describe the gratitude I feel to all of the people who were involved in his conviction. We stayed strong.
We all know knew at least one Kristy growing up. Glad to yours at least got some justice.
He'll get his. Rapists don't last long in prison
Prison is too good for him
Based
I was raped back in 2014 I got involved with drugs and was poisoned with something so messed up my life hasent been easy at all my mom also died from lung cancer in 2014
The Offspring..... One of the GREATEST BANDS EVER!!!! Only a few bands can convey emotion and be true to their selves as well!! Such a great band!!!
This song deserves Much more recognition
This music... IT'S BEAUTIFUL! I'm a girl from Russia and sometime I translate the songs what I listen to, and I think The Offspring's songs are crazy and beautiful.
Dasha Li hey i am a big offspring from the USA my grate grandfather was from Russia but i can never find it on a map have you ever heard of a place in Russia called Tasar Village, Fastland village or Tashky in Guberince county
Hello, im from Kazakhstan. The USSR had two villages of Tashky. One (Ташки) in Ukraine (UkrSSR) near Khmelnitskiy, and another one (Ташка) in Russia (RSFSR) near Perm.
Potatoes 🍟and vodka
Larry bird to you!
Hello from another Russian descendants. 2 of my great grandfathers were polish-russian.
This is Dexter's most clear vocals on any of their songs. It strikes a chord with me.
I remember this song when I was a teenager. Times will never be like this ever again. I miss you
I sent this song to my first serious gf in high school when it came out long after we’d broken up. Last time we interacted online. She seemed to really appreciate it.
Years passed and she contacted me about where she was in life. She seemed to be doing good and so was I. Years after that and things didn’t turn out exactly great for me. But, I hope they did for her, she deserves it more.
I still listen to Offspring on a Sunday trips to Tuscon, AZ and I love it. Early in the morning , no cars on the freeway, just me, my old British car, the open road, and the smooth purring of the engine. I am on my own and I do not think about my problems, quite frankly I do not give a shit, just pure driving . Also, Greenday, Nirvana, and HIM accompany my weekend soundrack. I just try to live and I feel free. Praise the Lord.
Dexter knows as someone who studied the brain that when he was singing this all he sung was extremely accurate. I'm happy he aknolged that he should've spoken out, and is doing awesome. ❤
My best friend in high school heard this song on the radio and thought I would like it. At the time, the fact that someone would even notice the despair of my life saved me. Decades later I come back this song and it still feel so raw ad true.
ghey
Not only kristy..also krist. Nobody will ever understand the feeling unless you're one of them. If u r kristy or krist, stay strong buddy. The feeling of insecurity and people around us are always judging instead of helping us.

To get back what was taken away
Though the marks on your dress
Had been neatly repressed
I knew that something was wrong
And I should have spoke out
And I'm so sorry now
I didn't know
Cause we were so young
Oh, clouds of time
Seem to rain on
Innocence left behind
And it never goes away
Can you stay strong?
Can you go on?

i'm never getting tired of them
JacyMarshmallow I could never get tired of them. They will always be my favorite band of all time. I own every album.
It’s my birthday today, and almost no one cares, so I just decided to watch my fav bands’s music videos.
Thank you, The Offspring, for being with me, even on such shitty days like that. Your music warms my heart and doesn’t let me give everything up. Thank you again.
Happy Birthday!
@@matthewp2794 Thank you!

Man this song came out when I was a kid and I haven't heard it in a long time listening now is the first time I've truly gotten it. God I miss being a dumb kid.
توبوا الى الله لأن بالصلاح والاسلام تحيا النفوس والقلوب
Repent to Allah in Islam because by Islam live the souls and hearts,
Dexter, when was in high school, knew a girl named Kristy. The girl has been sexually abused and everyone knew it. But no one did anything. Dexter is the boy in the end who tried to do something. As we see in the final scene, Kristy went to find Dexter. The Offspring singer didn't do anything but now he wrote this song and it's dedicated to her as an apology for not helping her.
Dexter Holland, you are such a great man!
Better late than never
Just a common man that at least had the courage to apologize. Nothing but a human saying sorry. Great and sensitive piece, this has been a very good way to beg pardon.
@@josephroberts9473 wikipedia
He is a nice man, but not great. Great would equal doing something. Song is Great, not the man behind it.
Dexter is a very nice man
heard this in my car back in 2010 & ugly cried because those lyrics hit close to home even with my name spelled differently!!!
This reminds me of a story I read on Reddit about a girl who was horribly bullied; it was posted by one of the people who used to torment her, who had heard a rumor from classmates that the girl committed suicide after she left the school. The former bully was trying to find her, to see if she was okay and apologize - there isn't a strong enough word - for treating her like that, let her know that she (the OP) had admired her kindness and talent as a ballet dancer, and was hateful to her because she was jealous. But OP said that she's been unable to locate the girl. Her post was so full of remorse for hurting her and unless a miracle happens and they run into each other, she won't ever know what happened. To think that the timid, sweet girl OP described ended her life or is in a bad place breaks my heart. It's just a story on the internet about a total stranger, but it haunts me.
Depression never really goes away, but you do have to put in the effort to stay positive. It's much easier to give up and quit. Stay strong buddies.
The Songs not about depression... Its about being sexually abused/molested as a child and feeling as if nobody cares because nobody stood up or fought for you when it happened..... and this sorta thing happens way more than it should.
Depression…Jesus i wish that was the problem and not being physically, mentally,& sexually abused everyday from 3 to 21. Maybe i wouldn’t just have depression to deal with. No not okay
@@kristiwasserman2303 Not everyone who's sexually abused takes the victim complex for life. You can definitely keep yourself in a better state mentally by your own work. Sure it's not fair, but that's the epitome of life.
I'm so lucky to know this song. so underrated.
I have experience with this song too. On the day 1 in high school my senior ask us juniors to draw a picture and i'm so in love, entitled with this song, I'm a loner and admiring the picture of that teary eye she draw, i'm guessing the meaning is soo deep so i draw it then my senior take it and shout in front of the class thought it was a butt hole of someone who had diarrhea.
Saw them 3 x live...every show gets better...and their messages like this one are something I needed to hear at that time...
I can't sing along with this without breaking down. It's a great song. 💗
Dexter is amazingl
OK, now that we got every video back, maybe its time for new ones!
larryconti23 It's more like the offspring's catalog was sold to the new label recently.

by the way they will come back with a new album i saw a photo of pete parada..... they were in the studio....!!!! 😊😊😊😊😊😊😉
Nice to hear that :)
"Rise and Fall...". Perhaps the best Offspring album.
Just heard this song for the first time since Hs and I still remembered al the lyrics after so long. My friend who introduced me to this band passed away recently and it sucks to know that they’re gone. Every time I listen to the Offspring it’ll more each time . RIP buddy
I remember hearing this when I was little, and now that I understand the meaning, it’s really sad
I breath offspring forever

good song
This Song is So iconic.
Beautiful song for a sad story... Everybody, try our best to make it never happen anymore
This song helped me heal when I was a kid. #thankyou
The pandemic is hard on all of us. His barber is going broke! Beautiful song with elements that most of us can relate to. I haven't been a victim but I know pain. Again, beautiful.
About the pandemic, I'm so weary of not seeing my best friend.
RIP RLB, I miss you so much baby, my only solace is that you're in a better place.
Thanks offspring. This song gets me. Every. Single. Fucking. Time.
People who haven't lost a loved or close friend - talk to them and ask them if they are doing OK for fuck sake
1nc0mp3t3nc3 This is the dumbest thing you could fucking do.
Of course they're not doing OK, they lost their fucking friend!
Oh, wait, I just realized you said "people who *haven't* lost lost a loved or close friend".
Then yeah, it is still the dumbest thing since they are probably doing okay, since they didn't lost anyone important to them
+1nc0mp3t3nc3 Even if they aren't OK they wouldn't say it. I know this because I used to do it all the time. The best thing you can do is be there for that friend. Instead of asking if he/she is ok, make him/her feel better by being there.
What? This song is about child sexual abuse
Elizabeth Jepson She kills herself at the end xx
This tune is really good stuff. I am someone from the Styx era. Styx is one of my favorite groups and arguably one of the greatest groups of all time. Offspring is certainly a group that will go down in history with many other great bands. I have little doubt that if this had been in the jukeboxes of the restaurants, skating rinks, arcades and bowling alleys of that day, many of the youth of that day would be more than eager to drop a quarter in the jukebox and play it.
I'm leaving this year listening to this song differently to this song than I did entering. To me it was a catchy song that taught me to speak up. Now, I can relate to Kristy.
You never think it'll happen to you until it happens.
Or until it’s every day of your childhood
@Teddy Bakerrr Going through my RUclips notifications, I forgot I commented on this song. Your response kinda made me reflect on my growth since then.
I was absolutely at rock bottom, as I felt alone while processing things. Since then, I'm doing much better and experienced tremendous growth.
not bad, I like the fast punk, but this is good, brings memories
I have a T-shirt with ur prof picture on it coincidence lol
Even though I've never experienced sexual assault, I still relate to this song, even as an adult. Sometimes you just need someone to speak UP and ASK YOU if you are doing okay. Genuinely and sincerely. People can be really good at hiding depression, loneliness, sadness. Sometimes those that seem the busiest or cheeriest are the ones who are suffering the most. Because no one can tell.
most of the 90s kids will always remember these songs. rock, metal, punk and other genres were the shit!
Don't waste your whole life trying to get back what was taken away~
I come back every so often to have to hear this, thanks offspring for the song that helped me the most
"For you this never ends."
Fuck, that hits hard.
Offspring is sooooo underrated and I hate that because they are fckng awesome!!!
This song hits so many emotions I never had.
I listen to this song when I was a kid and I loved the rythm.. But now that I'm older and listening to it again I believe it is a very deep and powerful song
My brother told me to listen to this song in high school after years of childhood SA… I’m nearly 30 and watching this hits me hard.
To all kristy out there , i hope yall doin fine
Thank you Dennis for showing me this, I’ll never forget how much you helped me get through it all.

Wooh, 11 years since this was released. This song means a lot to me, I was in high school when the album came out and this song specially help me to go out of the hard times.
This song worth a movie shot.

Offspring 2018. Just imagine
how is this song still managing to make me cry after all this years... I'm a 21 year old man.
One of my favorite songs by them. I really dug it when I first heard it cause I was so used to all the hard, loud music and the cussing from Dexter, (which is why I loved them lolz), that when I heard this I was like, wow it's beautiful and has a deep meaning. Great song Dexter. I love you and your band. I have since I was a kid. Btw I also love your hot sauce!!!
My moms name is Christi and growing up she was a single mom trying to figure out her own problems while raising my sis and I. I was too young at the time to understand why she was always night and day with her feelings. When I was in 9th grade This music video randomly played on a music channel on tv and for the first time ever I put myself in my moms shoes. She was always doing her best to make sure my sis and I were taken care of but nobody had asked her how she was doing and if she was okay. I showed her this song and now it’s one of our favorite songs ever. I hope my mom will always be okay and I will love her forever. 💜💜💜💜

Offspring have great ballads!
Is there anyone who has got a special connection with this song? Whom I can talk about just about this song? I really want to.
Yeah u can ❤
2019 but still underrated. I can relate this song with my friends' stories IRL. Too much abusing leaded her into depression. I had always helped ,calmed her in every way as much as i can do. But I've failed. She suicided. Last message she sent me "life is not what you think it is, you think you can make everyone smile but in your heart there are only tears that you can't avoid the pain of holding back from unspeakable torture" . This song really make me reminds her everytime i listen.
This hits my life on so many levels…
but are you ok?
