- Today I've got a little unbox and product review of the BAUER
1 In. SDS Variable Speed Pro Rotary Hammer from Harbor Freight. The retailer claims it compares directly to Bosch 11255VSR, but as we see in this video, that's not necessarily the case. #harborfreight #bauer

I rented a Bosch Bulldog for a project. Instead of renting the Bosch again the following week I decided to try the Bauer. I have always been of the mindset that you should buy the best tool you can afford so this was my first HF tool. I was pleasantly surprised that the Bauer performed just as well as the Bulldog drilling 6" X 5/8" holes in structural concrete. Not sure how the Bauer will hold up in the long run but I am happy with my purchase - even if it doesn't have the tool snob appeal of a Bosch.
Good video. I've got a different model Bauer rotary hammer, has worked great up until today. Used it for about an hour, took out the concrete I had been breaking up, came back to work some more, the unit is on because I can see the light showing it is getting power, but when I pull the trigger nothing happens. Thought I'd ask if you and maybe get lucky that you knew of a easy fix?
Thanks for the video - well done!
Never did figure the one "big flaw" though - watched a few times and see it is not the best in several repects, but what is the biggest flaw? On mine, the rotation-only mode is very unreliable (sometimes simply stops roitating even though the motor is running and settings are correct -- no heavy grease in the connector, soo ????). Rotation nonexistant - just noise.
I have some cracks in my driveway concrete (concrete is 4-5 inches thick total) where grass is growing. I need to widen the cracks to about 1 or 1.5 inches wide to be able to fill them with concrete. Is this powerful enough to do this job?
Maybe if you drilled a bunch of holes parallel to the existing crack as a starting point to chisel. But why not just use liquid concrete filler and skip trying to widen it?
Rotary hammer drills are soo mucj better than hammer drills for me. I have an older makita hammer drill that's about the size of the bauer and an older AEG spline shank hammer but the bits are huge and i usually drill smaller holes.. All in all though id take a rotary hammer over hammer drill all day
Is this powerful enough to dig out concrete on my driveway for a channel drain?
I would think you'd want a concrete saw for that. This might chip away at it but it'd take forever.
@@aaronstestlab OK, thanks a lot
Would have been nice to see this thing in action on portland cement.
Cinderblock isn't much of a challenge.
Good info 👍
Thanks!!
I just got this tool for 60 bucks on there as is table I'm willing to try it out and my thinking is if it gets my job done and I get a year out of it I'm happy
I agree bud. I picked up the bigger 1 1/8” rotary bauer hammer for 35 bucks and I still have buyer remorse. Thing could brake down any time I need to use it.
I feel like for $35 you made a good purchase. Was that one of those HF parking lot sales or something?
Yeah it was “open box” with one swipe of grease missing from the oem grease cup. Was dirty dirty cheap. And anyone whos ever used a hammerdrill to drill a pilot hole thru old concrete will tell you, rotary hammer or nothing lol
@@doylee469
I have both these
I paid the 30 bucks for 2 year warranty so im good
@@doylee469 I'm glad I read your comment, I was about to spend $65 with coupon thinking good deal.
So could your car, your hot water heater or hip..it is what it is and thats acheap tool for 35 bucks buy 2 have a backup
Howsabout demonstrating your hammer on cement, cocrete, rock etc.......
1:50 the chuck is wobbly af
Hard to say. He's moving about. You have to judge by the tip of the drill wi;; whose drill is still
Thank you for reminding why it's better to just buy a nicer tool. Maybe I'll get the ryobi sds as I'm already in the platform. Thanks again for saving me many trips back and forth to harbor freight!
Not a bad plan. I considered going that route as well when HD had them for $99. I was a little concerned that the Ryobi doesn't have any sort of side handle though.
You might also consider the Skill 20V brushless rotary hammer amzn.to/2OaMp8R (Amazon Affiliate)...similar price but comes with a big battery, depth gauge and removable handle. No vibration dampener though, which is something I wish I had after 15 or so holes, lol.
I don't know if you have bought a rotary hammer drill yet, but I would skip the Ryobi unless you have very little use for it. I have the current version as well as the previous version and the previous version is a nicer tool but it does not have a chisel only mode like the new one. Not having a side handle is a deal killer for me, especially for demo work, and it's not particularly inexpensive either. It's an okay tool if you are not doing any big jobs or using bits larger than 5/8", but there are better budget-friendly options if you don't mind using a cord.
A chipping hammer will break cinder block quicker thsn any rotary, lets see it on actual concrete
Maybe it's the video, but at 5:04 it looks like the bits stops spinning and between there and 5:20 it sometimes appears to go backwards???
Maybe you had it on hammer only? In any case, when a bit stops turning, pull it out and let it clear debris; you'll burn out the motor if you don't.
BTW I have the 1 9/16 version for $199 and it's awesome. I'm 60 now and I've had Dewalt, Bosch, and Hitachi/Metabo rotary hammers and this beats them not in *quality*, but in *value*; at 1/2 (or less) of the price of a high-end rotary, you get way more bang for the buck: If you don't use this kind of heavy-duty tool much, save some money and buy a Bauer.
why is it a 1" tool what is the 1" referring to??
Max diameter bit it's designed to work with
Its one big flaw is that it only takes small bits. Testing it on actual stones or concrete would be a better comparison. Cinderblock il like drilling through Corn Flakes glued together.
At some point in this video I drill 20'ish 5/8" holes in 6" poured concrete.
Work on your speaking you seem like a nervous wreck reading cards, lol
